Not according to my owner's manual it doesn't. 1972 280 SE 4.5,
requires premium -- min 93 octane I think. It knocks on regular.
It might have been detuned for the 73 to 78 models though.

For new parts
All gas MB's from the mid 80's on require premium fuel. 2 (Smart Car) ,4,6,8
or 12 cylinders, doesn't matter.
Only exceptions are the 380 V8's and the early 190 2.3.
