630
mile these days.
Should I be concerned?

No...it's been inching that way slowly. When I do less freeway driving it's
not as bad...say 1qt every 1K or so. I'm using Delvac 15W-40.

Bob,
I would like to know where it is going if I am using that much. Check
A quart in 1000 miles is the limit, at 630 (a quart to a tank) I'd
take a look at the valves, anyway.

If all the previously mentioned mechanical checks turn up nothing other
than blowby, the rings may just be getting a bit dirty. I've had amazing
luck with running a couple of treatments of Auto RX through old diesels.
It does wonders for cleaning up sticky rings and bringing compression

It seems my oil consumption has crept up over the last several months. Now,
at 176K miles, it seem to be going through one quart each 600 miles or so.
It had been one per 1200 miles for the longest time. Nothing is dripping on
the drive. The exhaust looks right but smells a little off (you know

What do you reckon the deal is?
Vacuum pump? Does this one pump into the intake manifold?

Bob,
Take that hose and let it pump into a coke bottle/or similar, for a few
check the vacuum pump, diaphram could be torn and sucking oil in.

Open the oil fill cap when running. If smoke pours out then your blow by
probably has finally exceeded what the system can handle crankcase
pressure os pushing the oil out somewhere.
This test does not work on some BMW's or Volvos as they ran positive

I had a 1971 250 with the 2.8 straight 6. The car had over 300K when I
bought it. The previous owner had spent (gulp) over $7000 restoring it.
Anyway, I put almost 100,000 miles on that car and it would only burn
(leak) 1 quart in 3000 miles.
On the other hand, my '72 250 which I bought in '74
