If the shell of the mast is touching the metal part of the mounting collar at
the fender, it should be doing it’s job. That’s the point at which the antenna
mast makes the connection to the antenna assembly. When you remove that chrome
collar/nut you’ll see a long copper or brass sleeve that’s
There is a powered splitter at or near the antenna. You need to get that out of
the circuit. I would be interested to see what the reception is like with the
coax from the radio just disconnected from the antenna stuff.
Wife’s SL never had the phone, so her’s doesn’t have all the related junk
The mast needs to connect to something inside the antenna motor assembly,

No, new Alpine head unit connected into the stock speaker system. Has CD,
Bluetooth for phone and music, and a USB I haven’t tried yet. It will blow out
the glass if I turn it past like 5 or 6 on the volume. Forget 11. Sounds very
good.
The phone (handset gone but the dash unit still there)
If it’s the stock radio, it sucks. All of the Beckers suck when it comes to
reception.
I live less than two miles from a major antenna farm. I can pick up stations on
my dental work. The Becker that was in the wife’s SL couldn’t pick up a major
FM station that’s 20 miles away in Tampa, and
The antenna was broken on the SL when I got it so I bought another one off The
Bay and stuck it down in the hole and pushed the plastic extender bit in. The
motor doesn’t work apparently which is ok for now. It has a really nice Alpine
head unit in it, music sounds really good so it is
