Peltier devices are much less efficient than heat pumps. But are much cheaper, smaller, quieter. Might even be less effective than the adsorbtion cycle (ammonia/hydrogen) RV refrigerators, which also won't cool things from warm very well, but can maintain cool temperatures just fine. -- Jim

Small portable 12v models are available in truck stops if you want to see them before buying, and also on the internet: http://www.ebay.com/bhp/12v-cooler-warmer I have one from a yard sale that works well; especially if you put cold food or drink in it. It's pretty slow cooling room
