I checked the camshaft timing by the alignment of the groove on the fwd
camshaft flange and the raised mark on the most fwd camshaft bearing cap
and
the reading came to 6 degrees after 'OT'. I had a hard time figuring out

the drip method will not work on the 60x engines.

I have a 1987 MBZ 300D Turbo (603 engine). A few days ago my car
began to
smoke a little more than normal and ran rougher at idle. I changed the
glow
plugs and it seemed to make a little difference but then a day later it
began to smoke a lot, sound very loud, and would die at idle.

As I said before, you cant use the drip method on 603 engines. You can
only use the lock tool or the digital tester

Ken: Although I think you have other areas to check first, you can easily
inspect the inside of the oil pan. After draining the oil, simply remove the
oil pan extension.
A new gasket is a few $ and as I recall the torque on the bolts is about 7
ft/lbs.
I did this when my vacuum pump self

If timing was off by 40 degrees, you would have bent valves. You
probably checked it wrong. As for the rough idling/smoking, could be
timing off, could be dirty injectors, could be bad delivery valves. Run
a can of diesel purge thru it and see what happens. Also, when its
idling rough, is

the 617. Should be a notch in the thurst washer and a mark on the
front cam
