Bushings are a few bucks and fairly quick and non-invasive. Car probably would
not suffer having fresh ones. Then you can mess with the internals if that fix
was not right

I don't know about that but have you checked the bushings? They went
bad on one of the SDs and it was almost impossible to get it in gear
forward or reverse.

I think it's a matter of putting the transmission selector in "R" but the car
not backing up. Good thing to check, though.
