I see plenty drivers staring down at the phone going 75-85 on rural
interstates. Really stupid! Mucho Stupido!
Personally, I see both Jim's point for rural areas and drivers who
stowed the dumbphone. I also see and agree with Max's point for morons
who operate a deadly weapon while staring

I did it to our 240D/3.0 and to one of Lt. Don's cars during the IowaQ in
2007.

Why did this make me think of the autonomous vehicles in the Woody Allen movie

All the big lights and bright screen people will soon be ensconced in automated
rolling coffins, where they will no longer need to see or drive themselves.
Then the lighting will become moot, as all the cars will be linked in a hive
mind. It will be us old farts who will remain in need of
I don't think four brake lights are more blinding than two.
But I agree with you that high efficiency bulbs encourage excess brightness,
especially for those buying aftermarket 'upgrades'. It's the unfocused LED
headlight bulbs that get my goat, followed closely by the fog lights that get
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jim drives in a mostly rural location, where
the majority of his roads are not lit at night. Dan drives mostly
suburban, with well lit roadways. Two totally different environs.
I drive in mostly suburban settings now, and see nearly every driver

I find two of them ample. (The second one is there for redundancy.) They
are _highly_ visible already. So, 2x is not blinding? How about 4x? 10x?
100x? More lumens equals more
I had no idea an 1157 was 21 watts, so I checked and it's 8w taillight and 27w
brake/turn.
Motorcycle headlights used to be 30/35w, no wonder they were useless at speed.

A 21 watt lamp is hardly blinding, much less four of them.
The whole idea is to increase visibility.

Thus blinding people close behind you every time you are at a stop.
When will this arms race of lighting end?

You know, there could be in the second gen W126 models, I don’t recall. If
there was I never had a problem with it on my 350SDL, as I know I did the
modification to it.

I thought I remembered there being one in the '87 300SDL . . . maybe not.

You can take a socket from a brake light and add it to the inner sections of
the taillight assemblies, as in where the fog amp is on the left side only do
the same on the right side as well. Tap into the existing brake light in the
assembly and add a bulb, and now you have SUPER brake lights.
What is this break lite mod you write of?
