The trunk opened this evening. Weird.
I've seen where the linkage between the vacuum actuator and
the lock mechanism gets a bit messed up, perhaps this is part
of your problem? It's got deliberate 'play' in it, so you
can use the key, but too much is a bad thing. (As would be
too little.)

Yup. That is what I hope for. Perhaps I can get the valet key also. But first I
must get the trunk lid open...

The trunk can be locked with the key, overriding the vacuum system. I
don't recall whether this is horizontal or vertical but I think it's
horizontal. In that case you are going to have to unlock it, you won't
be able to use the vacuum system.
How did you manage to break a steel key? Or was

How many times? I only have experience with one, and a new key came with the

On a W123 sedan trunk, the default position is horizontal. Turn
it clockwise 90 deg to vertical to be always locked.
I've always gotten a key with the 4 or 5 new cylinders I've gotten.

On one of the last nights of winter I locked my computer in the trunk. Same
setup, wouldn't turn for anything. I sprayed lubricant and WD40 to no
avail. Eventually I manhandled it open but it was just luck I didn't break
the key.
The next day it was warmer, lock turned easily. I put in some

Up here in the north we use methyl hydrate to unfreeze locks. Can
usually buy small squeeze bottles or aerosol spray cans at gas stations
here in winter. More than once I have been low on fuel and unable to get
the darned cap open to refill at the pump.
I think WD40 might prevent freezing but
The trunk opened this evening. Weird.
Anyway, I have no time to troubleshoot this until Wednesday or Thursday.

all is well.

I think that when the trunk key slot has been turned horizontal, it is locked
such that the vacuum lock is over-ridden, so that the valet key will open doors
and operate the ignition but won't open the trunk.

A copy. The ignition cylinder has been changed, so one key is needed for the
doors and another key is needed for the ignition. I will be calling Rusty in
the morning for locks. Hopefully, I can get the vacuum system sorted and the
