Air bubbles in the cooling system will do that --- no cooling at the sensor.

Yup. I've seen that a number of times. I have not determined
_why_ but it's only a problem when the air is cold and the
engine is idling. Then a quart or two (1-2 L) low is enough to
let the engine get hot.

As it was cold out I left the car running while I ran into the house. When

Where exactly do I shoot or do I just pan around and find the hottest
spot?
Ideally the spot where the temperature sender is.
But it's not too critical, the hottest (non-manifold!) spot
will probably do.

I'm guessing a quick check of the gage would be to have someone watch the
instrument cluster and pull the connector off of the temperature gage, note
the gage reaction and then ground the gage connector and see if the gage
swings the opposite direction. You can do this with a cold engine and
