Well, it doesn't look good. With the recent cold snap, the 87 300D has been
having serious difficulty engaging drive when starting out. After a few
blocks, it'll buck nastily before shifting to third, and once it has warmed
up, it flares from second to third.

First thought was vacuum, but it doesn't shift necessarily harsh with the
vacuum line disconnected. The flare isn't anywhere near as often as with
vacuum hooked up, but still is there.

Second, thought the trans was shot. Dropped the pan, and not only is there
nothing in the pan, but the fluid looks new. It's not, though.

This obviously doesn't leave much, and if this was a torqueflight or AOD, it
would be on the bench right now getting the offending parts replaced.

Short of rebuilding the transmission, I can think of four possibilities -
   - fluid, while seemingly fine could be shot (the stupid crown vics are
NOTORIOUS for this). I wouldn't have expected mobil 1 atf to have that
     behavior though.
   - the mobil 1 atf lubricates too well and I might be better off with mc
     parts junk
   - the vacuum modulator had a broken plastic rod that I repaired to see if
that solved the problem. The repaired rod didn't make an appreciable
difference, and with vacuum disconnected, I don't know that this would
     make a difference anyways.
   - there was a slight difference in shifting as I varied throttle below
about 1/3 throttle. perhaps a throttle linkage issue?

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance...

K
