What does the shop say about the leak seal stuff?

Also remember that if the evaporator leak is small, you can probably drive
for years by simply topping up the charge each spring. Don't forget to
also add an ounce or two of oil occasionally, as some of that leaks out
with the refrigerant.

They didn't say how bad the evaporator leak is, however, the system was working
fine a couple of weeks ago and it lost most (not all) of the refrigerant over
the last week. I have to suspect that's the evaporator leak, as the hose

Yeah, I would tend to agree, so now I need to really assess how much longer I
want to keep it and whether or not it's worth repairing. Doesn't make a lot of
sense to put $3400 into a $3000 car. I see that evaporators are relatively
cheap, but I'm really concerned about doing the job and the
Evaporator replacement: It's just time and patience. Two people on this
list who I'll bet have more physical limitations than you have done the job.
I'm going to be tackling that job next year or the next, just need to make
the time...
Replace the hose, have them evaluate the size of the leak
The evap on my 97 e300 is leaking. It has been sitting for a year till I get
time to pull the dash and replace it. It is a keeper so I am not going the stop
leak route

At this point I think I may replace the hose then see how well it will hold a
vacuum at that point. I can better gauge the size of the leak at that point.

I did about half of this job troubleshooting my 126 HVAC issues, which I
eventually solved with string and shoe goo. Mu main lessons-learned are
(1) devise a system to identify and store the many different kinds of clips
and fasteners and (2) take a lot of cell phone or digital photos along the
when I had my evaporator leak I was told the leak sealer stuff usually
worked if the leak only needed refilling at the most_once _a year - any
quicker and the leak was likely too large to fix with the sealer stuff.
Don't be overwhelmed at the prospect of replacing the evap - it's

So you end up with $6400 in a car you could sell for $3000. How much will
you drive it after you fix it? The real calculation is miles per dollar,
not how many dollars in a car worth X dollars, unless you are trying to
sell/trade cars rather than drive them.

You might want to have a micron gauge like they use in HVAC work.
Mitch.
Dan,
Try the stop leak. If that doesn't work, then cut an access hole in the
dash, replace the evap, then hinge the piece you cut out and the next time you
have a problem you'll have access to the dash. I can't believe any engineer
would require you to remove a dash to work on
