The Porcupine is a resistor array changing voltage to the blower motor, thus
changing speed. The controller box selects
input to the various resistors.

Yea, my indy said he did need the servo and yes, Bob, you are right. They suck!

No, the porcupine is the heavily finned (with circular cross-section
heat-dissipation 'spines') blower speed regulator that lives in the
air
I have a 1980 300D and I worked on the Climate Control with the Servo for 2
years. It seems that I'd get it set and it would would for several weeks
and then it would loose its mind.
I gave up and bought the digital replacement. It works every time now.
Though the only thing it really does
no, the older models do not have that, thats only on the 86 and up.

Heater water pump?
I think Snook should make sure it isn't the ACC servo first.
Seems like it should work fine except at idle if it's only the auxiliary water
pump.

Kinda fitting that I'm rebuilding mine right now :)
The post with the pics and info tripped the list size limit, so it's

My indy has a 1978 300D. The heat does not work and he said it needs
a water pump heater. I don't know what that is.
If it's the auxiliary water pump, you don't really need
it. Unless you spend a lot of time at idle in the cold
climates. Bypass it, or at least just unplug it.

Isn't it the aux water pump that gives us heat so fast on cold days? (faster
than any other car I've driven).

I would assume he means the servo? If so, dont have one. Best to get a
new metal one from Rusty, or go with the conversion kit.

Nope, it is the circulation system, that little bypass hose on older
engines (OM615/616/617, M180 etc.) that gets the first warm water to
your heater, rather than having to wait until the radiator is warm
and the thermostat opens.
The Aux heater pump only helps to circulate water to a heater

No. It only speeds the waterflow through the heater
core when the engine's main water pump isn't spinning
fast enough to keep enough heat flowing in. When idling,
that is to say.
