I am going to look at an '83 380SEC tomorrow. It is said to have a blown head
gasket. What other problems are associated with this engine? IIRC the early
380's had single row timing chains that were prone to fail. Is there anything
else I should look at?

throw out bearing, pull the tranny and just replace the clutch and
everything. My 240D stick has this problem.

bent the valve. In any case, the heads are coming off probably. You
have to watch out for the head bolts pulling out of the block requiring
a very difficult and expensive retapping of the holes.

The instructions are not very clear IMO, when I installed a fast glow kit on
my 78 240D - I didn't need the relay or anything other than the wires and
new GPs.
I suggest you remove the old GPs and the connecting heavy metal wires and
replace with the new [smaller] wires and GPs.

I had the same problem with my 85 300 TD. Last night I replaced the t-stat
and the temp got in the right groove during a test drive. On the stove
test, the old one opened at 60 C and the new one at 82 C.

the hand pump itself. Both deteriorate, and if they leak, will cause
the lift pump to pull in air instead of fuel. The result is a no-
