The only thing that I would consider touchy, is if you have to replace
the cable's guide tube, which would require headliner removal.
I have done a few tube replacements. They were all broken at the point

[MBZ] sunroof tools and other items.

2006-01-28 Thread Constantine N. Polites

Dave,

Thanks for the hint regarding the sunroof tools. I'm planing on having
the car painted. Some months ago I posted the status of my 350SDL
after an encounter with a discharge of sulfur dioxide. The refinery
actually paid in full. Any hints on getting a good paint job will be
appreciated.

I am still getting a low frequency rattle. It occurs only between 700
and 1000 rpm. I did replace the a/c clutch which had a
bad bearing. At that time I discovered a leak from the tandem hydraulic
pump. All of that is in order and functioning very well.

Another problem that developed is the kickdown function. I have 12
volts at the solenoid but have not tested the solenoid.
The transmission is about 20,000 miles old. The bowden cable is set
with a 1 mm slack.

All comments welcome.

Re: [MBZ] Bike Rider, Loud Pipes

2006-01-28 Thread LT Don
I can only answer from my own experience.

I ride very defensively (since an idiot t-boned me coming out of a stop sign
in 1976.)

I always assume that no one sees me. Even if I make eye contact with the
driver at an intersection, I am not seen. Here is my formula: car in an area
of danger = reduce speed + left hand on the clutch leve + right hand on the
front brake lever + foot positioned over the rear brake lever.

Please bear in mind that I live in and ride in an area where the average age
of driver is about 85.

Que? This got garbled, but I take the gist of it to be: Sunroof
broken, estimate high. Par for the course, I understand, and that
DIY on the popup-type sunroofs is not recommended (unlike the older

Wednesday night and I threatened him with a flogging if he worked on my car
during our rare Iowa streak of temps in the 50s.

VW is up on jack stands in mech's garage, w/ a half-shaft and a starter
removed. Ready to put the new parts in.

Should be driving it by Sunday afternoon, thanks to Rusty's Parts.

I've seen old European-style fuses where you could actually see the
metal element sagging from this effect. One of my VWs had a few like
that, including the wiper fuse. I didn't take the hint and replace it,
and it promptly blew from old age on one dark, rainy night.

I kind of like the glass-encased ones, not because of reliability, but
because they're easier to install (the non-glass ones come apart if
you're not careful) and because they're less likely to burn my fingers
if a short causes them to blow immediately when they're inserted. Both
kinds seem inferior to the American, blade-style fuses.

Well, the hub/flange are the same but you need to get a left side they
are different side to side. I can only assume that the half shafts are
the same too. I think Rusty carries them for around $400 but better
check with him on that.
You should probably get new rear wheel bearing kit while you have it
down that far. Do you have the pin socket for the hub/flange nut and
inverted Torx or double hex( forget which) to remove the axle? The bolt
for the end of the axle should come with bearing kit but if not get one
and maybe some new axle bolts or circlips.

Propane heat, and they are the propane company's 2nd stingiest customer.
I assume the family that uses less has a much smaller house. Dad is old and
gets chilled easily, so they set the thermostats at 73 F. It's all in the
insulation, you can get farther with good insulation than you can by
turning the heat down to 65 degrees.

Next house I build is going to be heavy on passive solar features.

What model of car? Use whatever you want for 123s or 126s. 124s and
201s are much more fussy, thanks to the accursed monowiper---I get
acceptable performance out of mine only with OE refills (and this is
on a fresh blade and arm with good spring tension: I just replaced the
whole deal last year with the newer version from late 124s, which I

Repair of the older sliding sunroof is a breeze. The pop-up roof is
another matter entirely and it's VERY easy to turn a flaw with a simple
fix into a problem that will cost a great deal to repair. The factory
manual (even with Dave's addendum) is NOT sufficient to instruct most
novice DIYers on how to fix the sunroof (in MY opinion). The guys that
have repaired a dozen or more of them can make it look EASY, but it's
NOT something you're likely to be able to perform after just reading the
manual and several of the common mistakes can result in the repair
becoming MUCH MORE EXTENSIVE AND EXPENSIVE.

So in my dad's barn is a 70something Datsun wagon that belonged to my
grandfather, and when he got sick/died my dad stuck it in the barn where
it has sat for 15 or 20 years. I was visiting the other day and dusted
it off and looked at it. It is quite good shape body-wise, the interior
smells really bad from all the inhabitants over the years. It was
running when parked, probably would not be hard to get running again.
But that was not really my thought...

It is a little front-wheel drive thing, nothing special, but kinda funky
in its way. Got me thinking that doing a rat rod job on it might be
kinda fun at some point, put some power in it, rear-wheel drive, weld in
some frame to hold it all, etc. An old rat rod ricer! Then I got
thinking that rather than the standard 350, an old Benz engine/tranny
would be kinda cool. Probably not a diesel unless I did one of those
Finnish mods to give it stupid power. And it would have to have a
boomer sound system and wiper/underneath neon and skulls (or maybe
Godzilla heads). And a couple of wings, gotta have wings.

The car has a 4 ft track and an 8ft wheelbase, more or less, a sheet of
plywood size! Not a lot of room to stick much under the hood, but those
older SLs really cram a lot in not much more space, if even. And 190s
and such are not a lot bigger. Hmmm... A 6 or an 8, maybe a 5?

Any thoughts? (I realize this could be viewed as really stupid, or
whacked, or weird, and I agree!) Donations?

(This is a better discussion than loud motorcycle mufflers)

Yes, you could probably stuff the front end off an SL under there (you

At very least, you should do them in pairs, to maintain even braking.
But it's probably best to do them all. My car has new rear calipers and

Plain old garden hose water, after you rebuild or replace the calipers.
That's plural.

Ooh! Don't let that one get away, no matter how bad that condition.
Datsun 510s are real collector's items with a huge cult following, at
least on the West Coast. I rarely see them in Portland (a hotbed of
car nuts), but when I do they are always beautifully restored or
obviously built up for autocross or other amateur racing events
(low-profile tires, roll cage, lightweight seats, etc.).

Yeah it is a 510. I looked under the hood briefly and thought I saw
half shafts going to the front wheels but maybe I was delusional. I'll
do some searching on it, see what might be possible.

Sure it's front-wheel-drive? Sounds like a 510, which was RWD (and
known in its day for terrific handling... sort of a Japanese BMW

 on mods including engine swaps...)

[MBZ] Glut of Benz

2006-01-28 Thread redghost
I have noticed that nobody likes the E series of the past three years
or so. There are truck loads of the C series at every corner lot, and
a bunch of M as well. Nobody looks to have leased the E's though.
Could people have bought them? An excess of C 220 and 320 in ads and
car lots. Lots of SLK or CLK too. will these become the ...

Oh, yeah, these cars will decompose before the little kids can dream of
driving them when they grow up.

[MBZ] 300CD Tranny question

2006-01-28 Thread paul
I recently purchased a '83 300CD for dirt cheap, and drove it from
Dallas to Austin and back. I noticed that there's a slight flair from
1st to 2nd, and sometimes from 2nd to 3rd. It also takes a second a or
two to drop into reverse. What should i inspect/replace first? B2 piston?
