1980? With the battery under the hood? Certainly in the SL's it
had long moved to the trunk, and I thought the main reason was heat.

Sounds like the throttle position sensor to me on the hesitation. As
for the idle deal, sounds like you are talking about the idle air valve
that you had replaced.
