[MBZ] How to clean brake dust from alloy (bundt)

2007-05-04 Thread Glenn Brown

Andrew,
Unless you plan on repainting, do not use Brillo on your bundt alloy
wheel(s)? I tend to use Simple Green when I wash mine and this does quite a
good job, but yours may be worse. Worst case scenario, without adversely
affecting the paint/clear coat, I'd try Easy-Off oven cleaner. Good luck.

I just sold my other parts wagon which still had the third row seat. Easy
to install. I added it to the wagon when it was still running. I did not
however have shoulder belts. I was able to rig up some lap belts. I can
contact the new owner and see if he is willing to sell. Let me know.

Can I add the third row seat to any TD? Does anyone have one with
seatbelts
and hardware they would like to part with? The wagon I found is brown
with
a tanish interior, kinda yellowy tanIs that palomino? I'm not real
picky on color as long as it's in decent shape. I need to get something
that will haul all of us(7) and get decent mileage. Gas and diesel are
killing me at $3.12 a gallon and only getting 7-8 and 12 MPG.

Dodge has been used to pull the travel trailer and to help out the local
dragon boat club haul boats to several races here in the Northwest. 4 900lb
boats on a 4000lb trailer along with all of the gear weighing an additional
600LB totaling around 8200lb, no sweat! They've always hauled them behind
underrated tow vehicles bearly able to hold highway speeds and not really
substantial enough to safely handle the load either. ON the subject of
diesel engines, they're thinking of buying a used 14-16' box truck to haul

6.2 or 6.5 is probably an easier swap but at the cost (on the 6.2 anyway) of

The 4bt is also a smaller engine and pretty easy to find I'm given to

Diesel dealers provide a pipeline to rare, green cars

Elsa Wenzel, for News.com
To serve a growing demand for greener, cheaper transportation, a new
class of used car dealers has found a niche selling biodiesel-ready autos.

Around the country, dealerships hawking green diesel cars are
attracting middle-class drivers motivated by high gas prices and the
threat of global warming. More than a dozen of these businesses are
concentrated along the West Coast, where the biodiesel subculture is
breaking into the mainstream.

Most of these clean-diesel entrepreneurs rely exclusively on the
Internet for advertising, using their own Web sites and Craigslist
classifieds to lure potential buyers, while a minority also showcase
their wheels from streetside auto lots.

In 2003, I came out of the closet and became a full-blown car dealer,
said Steve Ahl, a former recycled-lumber salesman who is outfitting his
used diesel car lot in Ukiah, Calif., with solar panels. This isn't the
typical suede shoe used car lot operation.

International with the previously mentioned DT466. The options you

We bought a 99 in Gilmore CA with a 24 foot box, DT466, 6 speed, and

DT 466 was designed in the famed IH design facility in Germany and is

you can 'chip' the DT466 to get more power. The tractor pullers get
lots of hp out of the ag version. i don't know what the most hp
record is for the engine. It is probably in the high hundreds.

The recurring theme I hear from all recent model VW Diesels is
automatic transmission problems. There is no filler tube, no dipstick.
You have to use VW fluid and plug into the computer to check the
level.

I don't think I'd buy a used VW TDI without good service records. VW
specifies a limited range of synthetic oils, and the forums at
tdiclub.com are full of horror stories about ignorant dealers and
mechanics putting nonapproved oils in and ruining the engines.

FWIW, my ex-wife's '01 New Beetle TDI has been pretty much
trouble-free. Fun car and gets an honest 35 mpg city (45 highway)
with the automatic tranny. My biggest complaint about that car was
the horrible stereo! (It's the premium Monsoon system, too. Go
figure.)

Anyone know what pros do when they are planning to paint, chrome, or
powdercoat wheels? There must be some definitive surfactant or

larger rear seats and rear door opening in the crew cab models compared to
the Dodge Quad Cab that I have. The 6.0L and 6.4L ProblemsStroke engines
scared me away, and I really didn't want another 7.3L in a used truck. Our
Dodge has been used to pull the travel trailer and to help out the local
dragon boat club haul boats to several races here in the Northwest. 4 900lb
boats on a 4000lb trailer along with all of the gear weighing an additional
600LB totaling around 8200lb, no sweat! They've always hauled them behind
underrated tow vehicles bearly able to hold highway speeds and not really
substantial enough to safely handle the load either. ON the subject of
diesel engines, they're thinking of buying a used 14-16' box truck to haul
the gear with a large enough diesel engine that can also pull the boats,
something more powerful than the 4cyl Isuzu NPR. Any suggestions?

I bet the latter problem is either operator error or easily fixed, not
a design flaw. The TDI engine is even more efficient than the average
diesel and has very little surplus heat to spare for the interior
until the engine is fully warmed up (which in my experience can take
as long as half an hour). There is an extra glow plug just for
interior heat, but it comes on only if the temperature knob is cranked
all the way up to a detent you can feel at the end of the travel (kind
of like turning the dial on a 124's ACC all the way one direction or
the over to override the interior temp sensor). My ex thought the
heater in her Beetle was totally inadequate on cold winter days until
she figured that out. But the fifth glow plug can also fail for
various reasons.

Now, are manufacturer's warranties transferrable through multiple owners? Or
does that vary? I've heard of several fixes needed on these cars and all of
them I've heard have been covered by warranty.

Helpful input. I looked at that link to the TDI club site. Their FAQ is very

The Citrus stuff worked well for me. I might be able to find a can or

the stuff was pretty cheap so you might want to consider getting a case.

BTW I saw a 280SL at the same time (circa 62-67?) It was pretty hot stuff. I
was suprised!

(The photos are at http://ns1.2tough.com/~jreames/P4290003.jpg and
http://ns1.2tough.com/~jreames/P4290004.jpg ) ... It was squealing around on
the edge of traction in those photos. If opushed any more, it experienced a
departure as ESP kicked in.

Love that clip. Have watched it several times. The crash sequences look like
 it
 stands up pretty well.

An ultrasonic bath in something like a Simple Green solution would

I've also used a small electric pressure washer to fairly good
effect. Cleans the rubber too.

A 420 will get the same mileage but has ALOT more power. The SDL is
nice though.

Re: [MBZ] Proof it still has some life left??

2007-05-04 Thread Rich Thomas

Did you report the car as stolen? Can you petition or appeal the fine?

Yes it is a tax, or more correctly a revenue generator, in Houston the
photo red lights are run by a private company that splits revenue with
the city. I also noticed a van parked at the freeway entrance ramp a
couple days ago, scanning tailpipe emissions and photographing license
plates to send you a ticket or something.

The speedo in Brunnhilde is spot on after 28 yr, gotta admire those old
Benz engineers.

Seriously, though, I think I am going to get the speedo tested to see how
accurate it is.

This is tough. In Az, you can get by as long as you're 10mph under the limit.
