I think you meant, in AZ, you can get by as long as you are under

75.Don't understand why they don't just enforce the 65 or post
the limit at 75 and ticket above that.

In the Scottsdale portion of Loop 101, cameras are used and some
members of the lesser gene pool have had their picture taken at
speeds exceeding 125mph and one gave the finger salute to the camera.

The compressor is the same part used in many 60's American cars and many
trucks well into the 90s.

You should be able to order one from your local parts store just make
sure you get the correct compressor oul to pour into the crank case.
Your compressur will be a right hand or left hand the direction is
marked on the head.

You can also find one in a junk yard full of older American cars.

the oil in the friend's '06 VW TDI. I was surprised to learn that the

[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Um, not in Linux.

A plain ln will create a hard-link - that is, two labels that point to
the same inode. Change one and you've changed them both - unless when
you make the change, you unlink (or delete) the original and then
rewrite the file.

Using ln -s creates a soft-link, or symlink. This is a file that is a
forward to the real thing. Most programs will treat the link as though
it were the real file. Thus if you edit the symlink, you really edit
the real file and if you edit the real file, the symlink will point to
the changed file.

So except for the situation where a file is unlinked before being
re-written, modifying one or the other side of a link will alter both.

Re: [MBZ] How to clean brake dust from alloy (bundt)

2007-05-05 Thread LarryT
The problem with brake dust and alloy wheels - it's not just a dust that
settles on the wheel that can be removes by cleaning. It is a corrosive
material that actually etches the wheel. Think about that the next time
you're working around the brakes - it;s best not to breathe that stuff. So,
typically, cleaners that work on the surface will have limited results.
Something must be used that will work down into the corrosion.

If you have wheels which are not heavily coated with brake dust, the best
way to keep them that way is to hose them off once or twice a week followed
by an ocassional coat of wax.

But to prepare the wheels for painting many people have the wheels bead
blasted - then they are primed, color coated (Astral Silver IIRC) and clear
coated.

Bead blasting is widely suggested as being the best way to prep the wheels.

Anyone know what pros do when they are planning to paint, chrome, or
powdercoat wheels? There must be some definitive surfactant or
solvent out there that lets you get every last bit of brake dust
without endless scrubbing in the nooks and crannies (those of you with

A buddy of mine has a client who makes all kinds of canned solvents and
cleaners and lubes and such. He gave me some cans of some sort of
citrus-y solvent that also seemed to have some kind of alcohol in it.
It wasn't nasty and smelled pretty good, and was death on cleaning some
brakes and wheels and other gunk on Brunnhilde. I'll see if I can dig
up the catalog or web site and see if I might have some of around
somewhere.

Otherwise, white vinegar is reported to be an excellent cleaner, a bit
acidic but benign.

There probably is, but likely a nasty chlorinated hydrocarbon that you

I tell you, I drove the 420 the other day. It sure is nice to have a
nice smooth gas v8 every once in a while. While it does have plenty of
power, it feels like a 240D compared to my 560SEL or my 380SE with the
5.0 euro motor in it.

[MBZ] 300SEL

2007-05-05 Thread BillR
Actually, you offered it to the list for $4,900 and offered to throw in a
set of sheepskins.

I'm not really sure but maybe there was a 250,000 mile bumper to bumper 100%
warranty and all oil changes were covered and I got a new set of tires every
year Hard to remember exactly.

Actually I'd forgo all that stuff after the sheepskins if you wanted to drop
it below the $4,900 ... or pick me up from the airport.

the oil in the friend's '06 VW TDI. I was surprised to learn that the

I was further surprised to learn that use of Mobil 1 will void the car's

The obvious failures, when somebody goes limping into the shop with holes
worn through their cam followers and no lobes on the cams, happen when the
oil gets changed to dino. I bet your '01 could have gone 10k on a change of

2007-05-05 Thread OK Don

Thursday AM I headed to Lawton (80 miles SW.). I turned on the key,
fastened the seatbelt, looked at the glow plug light, and saw that it
was off. It's usually still on for another second or two. The engine
started normally. When I released the key, the glow plug light turned
on, and stayed on for several minutes. The car has done strange
electrical things in the past, and turning it off, then starting it
again has always cured whatever was happening. So, I turned it off and
back on at the first stop. The glow light turned on after I released
the key again. It did the same thing when I stopped for fuel
($2.65/gal) 10 miles or so down the road. The car is operating
normally otherwise. We made a stop 15 miles outside of Lawton to pick
up a passenger - and the glow light still turned on after releasing
the key. We drove into town, and stopped for two hours. When we left,
the light worked normally - on when the key is turned, wait till the
light goes out, then start the engine, and the light stayed off.
It worked normally yesterday.
A week ago a noise that sounds like a vacuum operated CC flap started
somewhere in the dash while the ACC is in AC mode. It sounds like it's
springing open (or closed) every 5 to 6 seconds. I don't find any
change in air coming from the dash or windshield vents with the noise.
Neither changing from normal to equal upper and lower mode, nor
turning on/off the cabin recycle switch stops the noise.
Strange, must be a wagongeist. I've been wondering why Snook wanted to
sell this car is the 300SEL haunted also?

Well, all the glow plugs are new, and it's working fine now. Even when
the light is wacky, the engine starts like the plugs are working fine.

problem solved,

Now, while my problem was a bad amp you could be seeing a bad 1 or 2 GPs or
bad wiring between the Amp and one or more GP.

But I can tell the difference between the few extra revolutions it
takes to start when I don't let it pre-glow, even at 75F.

Don:

My 240D did that briefly. I am pretty sure it was a carbon bridge in the
pre-chamber shorting things out some, because after I reamed out the
pre-chambers the problem immediately went away and has not returned. I was
using the upgrade pencil-style plugs, too, not the loops ones.

Oops. I just read somewhere that even GC isn't good enough to keep the
cam lobes and lifters intact on the latest TDI. Now I'm confused as to
what is good enough, maybe Castrol TXT?

I think that's what the fellow used. I looked at the bottle and it did say
it was rated for diesels.

Re: [MBZ] OT Any Known Issues 04 Golf TDI

2007-05-05 Thread mykd1
Most of the issues with the VW Golf as with any of the VW's is the cam seals
leaking. The tdi seems to be fairly reliable for the most part. I have never
heard anything about TB's braking and VW recommends they be changed at 80 to
105,000 miles along with the water pump. I do however recommend using a 505 01
grade oil to prevent cam seals from shrinking. Castrol makes a txt oil
specifically for VW's

I know many of you are knowledgeable on VW models.

We're looking casually at an '04 Golf TDI and need the inside information
regarding any known issues with that particular model.

We may go look at it today or tomorrow, but want any red flags to save us a
trip.
