Reman #17 or better is the way to go. Personally, just start with the
headgasket and have the head inspected and work from there. While the head is
off you can hand lap the valves as well if everything checks out OK.

I compared the 606 to the 603 hg last night, the 606 def seems to be of
different material. The Finns say its copper but without one in hand

It still needs adjustment, its hard to get it into first with the pedal.

Finally dredged up my TDM. Boiled down version:

Non-turbos 123.123 (240D), 123.130 (300D), 123.190 (300TD) up to 1979: start in
second, no kickdown unless full throttle applied.

1980 to September 1984: 123.12x; 123.13x and 123.19x (turbo and non-turbo):
idle in second, kickdown to first with the slightest application of the
accelerator.

October 1984 (= 1985 model year) to end of series 123: idle in first and start
in first without any application of accelerator pedal. They will also shift
down into first when approaching a standstill (at about 13km/h).

1985 California version is basically identical to Federal except that the 1-2
shift happens at a slightly (2-5km/h) lower speed, and the stall speed on the
torque converter is higher (2400-2700 vs 2100-2300 Federal). Other shift
behaviour is same as Federal.

Curt Raymond wrote:
My '84 190D doesn't kick down unless I cram down on the go pedal, even then
sometimes theres a long delay before it kicks down.

To Curt's point: oddly, the 1984/85 190E 2.3 (201.024) and 190D 2.2 (201.122),
as well as a couple of Euro 123, 124 and 126 gasser models, start in second no
matter the position of the shift lever. The only way to get into first is
indeed to use the pedal to kick down. I assume this related to the shift gate
being labelled D/3/2 instead of D/S/L.

So Curt, no adjustments needed on your 190D!

The part I don't understand about your MC issues is that there isn't a
bleed port on the MC. The system bleeds entirely through the slave,
which is why you must pressure bleed it.

The system, by the book, bleeds entirely through the MC, back
to the reservoir.  You use the lower bleed screw to hook to
a brake bleeder, and pressurize it that way.  Has worked every
time for me this way.

Why?

After 25-30 years, the rubber gets rotten
After 20-30 years and 200-400K miles, they are worn out.  When the
turbo is running, , it may be true that the small pressure boost may
help prevent oil loss, but how much time does your engine spend with
the turbo not at full boost/low boost/no boost?

It will cut smoking
It will lower oil consumption

On my high mile SDL, the only major things I did was a new timing
chain and I replaced the valve seals at 315K  M/L.

So why are you doing it?

Marshall claimed there was no need on diesels but there were folks
on here (Dave M?) who claimed it was required...

I find this hard to believe. Do you mean that you can't force the
transmission into first even by moving the lever to position 2 at a
stop? Why would D-B go to the trouble of making a special
transmission without this feature? It wouldn't affect fuel economy
ratings, since the transmission would behave the same if left in D.

I assume this related to the shift gate being labelled D/3/2 instead of D/S/L.

FWIW, both of the 722.x cars I have, an '86 300E and '87 300D, have
the same shift gate, yet the 300D starts in first and the 300E in
second (but can be forced to start in first by putting the lever in
position 2 when stopped). The shift gate is not a reliable indicator
of transmission behavior.

Re: [MBZ] Driving a 240D was Save the Date-2011 ChowdaQ

2011-03-07 Thread Tim C
Right after I got the 74 240D, I was heading to work on the interstate. The
car was still pretty new to me, and I basically just floored it; no
functioning speedometer, but it's a 240D, right?

Anyway, I change into the exit lane and notice a cop is following me, close;
he continues doing so for about a mile, and of course I just maintain pace.
Once I pull off the exit he keeps going, so I figure he just looked like he
was following me and went on my way.

A few days later I dug up a GPS and tracked my commute. Turns out I was
doing about 80 during that stretch, probably closer to 85 (yes, it is down
hill). I guess the cop felt bad for me; it's a 65 zone, that's a mandatory
loss of license in NC.

Now all the speedometers are working and I drive pretty much legally. But I
don't joke about how slow 240Ds are. :)

Re: [MBZ] valve stem seals replacement

2011-03-07 Thread Dieselhead

Ok, sorry

The SDL is the only one I ever did in situ. It smoked on startup
and had high oil consumption. After I did the new seals and chain,
and switched it to M1, the oil consumption dropped to about the same
as a new engine, and the smoking stopped. I used to lay a navy-type
smoke screen with it before that.

All other times, I put on seals as part of doing the head.

I knew all that I was asking Glenn why on his car specifically...

I've never had an MB I thought they'd get me anything on. My 190Ds
don't give appreciable smoke or smell at idle, my 240Ds both did but
were about the same and on par with other 240Ds I've seen. My '85
190D had 310,000 but had had some valve work at some point I think...

I had an '84 190D 2.2, five speed, and it was an absolute blast. I do regret
selling that car. I'd pick up a nice 190 five speed, gasser or diesel, if the
price was right and I could convince SWMBO.

My biggest beef against the 201's is that the interiors are very cheap.
Another
odd aspect was that the AC would get heat soaked in the summer following engine

minute or two and then cool off.

I would not advise doing your own, If your head needs guides, I'd
leave that to a auto machine shop. If it only needs seals, then yes,
you can easily DIY. A good way to find a good machine shop is to
talk to they guys in the back of your favorite stealership. Find out
who they use. Go to that one.

The price of valve and seat grinding equipment is too expensive for
use once every 2-5 years, or even a couple of times a year.

Pull the head, check it, and if it looks good, take it in to a good
machine shop that works on MB Diesels. When I pulled the head on
the escort Diesel at 100K, it looked so good that I put it back on
without doing anything but the new head gasket.

Re: [MBZ] California Version - 1985 300TD

2011-03-07 Thread David Bruckmann
The TDM lists specific models with this won't shift down behaviour. Some
123/124/201 models behave differently than others, and as you say the shift
gate pattern is no particular indicator. Specifically, the 1984/85 190E 2.3 and
190D 2.2 are listed in the TDM, but it presumably boils down to a specific
build date that may or may not coincide with the model year. IIRC there are
also a couple of 124 models listed, but I don't have the TDM with me and so
cannot look them up right now.

Curt: what is the build date on your 190D, and is it a 2.2?

Alex Chamberlain wrote:

I find this hard to believe. Do you mean that you can't force the
transmission into first even by moving the lever to position 2 at a
stop? Why would D-B go to the trouble of making a special
transmission without this feature? It wouldn't affect fuel economy
ratings, since the transmission would behave the same if left in D.

I assume this related to the shift gate being labelled D/3/2 instead of
 D/S/L.

The 2.6 5 speed combo is a pretty desirable one in a W201 and you
should definitely take a look if such a car fancies you... you'll find it
quite different than a W116! The price is a bit high for a W201, but if the
car is nice with low miles, its absolutely reasonable.

For a little while I had a 190D 2.5t, but I'm not a big fan of the W201...

Tell me more about valve stem seals for an OM603.

Would you (or the list) advice doing my own valve job on my OM603
head, if it is
not cracked?

2011-03-07 Thread Allan Streib
Every time I've had a factory windshield replaced I ended up with leaks
within a year or two. Twice on a VW and once on a Dodge Caravan.

I suspect this is because of cost-cutting on the part of the glass shop
in choice of gasket. I'm going to be replacing the window gaskets
(front and rear) on my W116. I'm tempted to order gaskets from Rusty
and then have a shop do it so that if the glass breaks it's their
liability not mine. Or is this an easy enough DIY job? One reason I'd
like to do it myself is so that I can be sure that any rust under the
gasket is addressed before reinstalling.

Another
odd aspect was that the AC would get heat soaked in the summer following engine
shut-down, so when you restarted the car, the AC would blow really hot for a
minute or two and then cool off.

Could be worth it, could be crap. I've probably got $4500 in my '84 190D right
now (it was a $250 car remember) and its got a creaking ball joint (just

I'm actually more concerned that the noise is the clutch being not fully

Current theory is the sound is created by two rust holes (don't tell Dwight),
one through the inner fender and one through the rocker. Both will be addressed

No, not really. I have done it myself before. If I had time, I

I guess really it's not that it's hard - but it's necessary to

One reason I'd like to do it myself is so that I can be sure
that any rust under the gasket is addressed before
 reinstalling.

The shop I hired spotted a bit of rust. He applied a metal

applied the primer and the it always stopped the rust.

poorly and someone else was in a hurry...
The 85 needs a new motor, but just had the tranny replaced. ?The body has a

No significant chassis problems in either car. ?Ride and handling is great.
Willing to sell either in pieces or whole. ?Bottom line for me is salvage

That doesn't sound good. Don't forget that you CAN drive it without a
working clutch (as long as it fails in the engaged position) - so don't feel
stranded, when you're not.

That would be a trick, since your 510 is RWD and a '93 Maxima is FWD.
Were you planning to turn the transaxle around and put the engine
where the rear seats are? ;)

Mid-engine, rwd datsun. That could be fun!

Would need custom linkages, fuel tank relocation, some frame work to add the
ifs setup to the rear as an irs setup...

And lots of time...

Or, an adapter plate to mate the engine to the trans, and be done with it .
:)
