I run Mobil 1 5W40 in my 82 240D. I have been doing so for the 5 or so years
that I've owned it. It has always had a pretty significant oil leak as

Already been done, made no difference.
I got down under the car today and had a look, the outer bearing is impossible
to see but the inner bushing looks awful.

My Cub Cadet tractor was getting slow to start last winter requiring a shot of
ether most every time I plowed snow with it. I thought the problem was slow
cranking so I measured the voltage drop at the starter/generator, 4v! It didn't
get any better just cleaning connections so I dug deeper.
Sounds like years ago when I worked in a rental and fabrication shop. We had
loads of welding cable that went out for rent, and often came back in a
condition that required us to cut off the camloc connectors and make up new
ends.
This gave us some nice scrap pieces that were perfect for
Marshall and I had an argument back when I was trying to commute with an '83
240D at -20F. I wanted to install 00 ga battery cables which he insisted were
an absolute waste of time. I was trying to get every possible advantage, which
is why I was using 0w40 oil...
