I'm thinking oil starvation or wear from junk circulating in the lines takes

The way he describes it, I wonder if the rebuilder didn't have it bolted

OK, looks like the SKF seal is 17907 = inside diameter = 45.01mm, =
speedi-sleeve part# is 99177 (standard) or 99830 (gold higher quality /
longer lasting).

The SKF website and the speedi-sleeve catalog both caution that the correct
size is determined by measuring the shaft, I can't do that until I take the
hub off.

I called local auto parts warehouse, Parks, and they carry the Timken
equivalent of the SKF speedi-sleev and have the same size and the next size
up and down in stock, so the odds are good that when I take the hub off, I
can buy the repair sleeve kit (about $40) the same day and get the car back
on the road quickly.

I called several local bearing supply places, including two that are SKF
distributors, and they don't keep ANY repair sleeves in stock. We can get
that for you in a couple days doesn't cut it. I do not want to take the
car out of service to remove and measure the hub, order the sleeve, wait
2-3 days and then put it all back together.

Agreed, that is is bad to have the car down for a week waiting on parts.

The sleeve I got was loose, but I installed it with loctite, and I
expect no problems. too small to get it on the hub without damage is
another deal.

I'd suggest putting the sleeve on a block of wood, then set the
vibration damper hub on top evenly and bump the hub with a rubber
hammer. The damper is larger and more easily kept parallel to the
wood surface.

Even better! Timken catalogs for their seal applications list both the
replacement seal from the MB part number and the Redi-sleeve part
number. In this case the Timken part number is KWK99177.

I'm going to stop by Parks tonight on the way home and buy it if they have
it. Their price is about twice what I would pay on Amazon if I wanted to
wait ten days or longer, but I love to have a local parts place that not
only has a huge selection and good stuff, but they stay open until midnight
7 days a week, so I'll pay the extra and maybe I can knock this repair out
this weekend.

There you go. Problem solved. To much cheap oil, just shut down a refinery
for a few months...

EPA has not allowed a new refinery to be built in over 25 years anywhere in
the USA. Existing refinery capacity is limited by antiquated equipment
which has been patched together repeatedly while trying to meet ever more
stringent EPA regulations.

A new refinery, built from scratch would use more efficient component
parts, built to latest EPA standards, however, EPA will not permit new
construction, along with various environmental groups protesting.

Thus... we are refinery limited, which drives up the cost per gallon.

Better living through government regulation, yet again.

Re: [MBZ] WTB: crankshaft hub

2015-08-13 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
Have the Timken sleeve in hand, probably going to install this
weekend. Oil leak requires a quart every 500 miles now. Back of the
car is coated, nasty.

Whaddya mean, nasty? Back of the car is _rustproofed_. Charge extra
for that...

I may wash the engine tonight to ensure the leak is REALLY at the
crank seal, no reason why it couldn't be something else, but that
crank seal is the prime suspect for now.

Dude! Way better to be sure _before_ you get out the wrenches!

Re: [MBZ] OT Mini-van dual zone a/c

2015-08-13 Thread WILTON via Mercedes
For my '75 Dodge van rear evaporator in '75, I ran regular, rubber AC hose
from engine compartment under the vehicle (secured by tie wraps/zip ties)
and up a rear, inside corner (covered on inside by a factory panel) to the
evap mounted on ceiling immediately inside the rear doors. Still working
great when I sold the van 17 years later.

Thanks to everybody for the advice and enlightenment.

For the most part, you have all reinforced what I was thinking. Just
wanted to make sure I didn't miss anything.

Actually, the evaporator itself is probably not leaking. The service
adviser described the leaks as being in the o-ring joints that connect the
several lengths of aluminum tubing connecting the front condenser to the
rear evaporator setup. Those joints were all too corroded to separate.
Presumably the tubing connections at the rear evaporator were similarly
corroded. Of course the dealer's solution is to rip it all out and replace
it. And from a dealer's -spare no cost to the customer- perspective this
makes some sense. When I googled the problem, I saw some photos that
showed the couplings are aluminum, tapped and held together with steel
bolts. As you would expect, a little road salt would make the dis-similar
metals fuse into an inseparable mass. It would take mucho time, skill and
tools to replace just those joints.

My wife says she doesn't care about the rear air conditioning, now that
the

kids left the nest. So I'll probably plug or bypass, as appropriate, the
lines to the rear.

To keep the records accurate, I can't speak extensively about Toyota, but
this Sienna has been remarkably trouble free for the last 175,000 miles.
The four Mercedes diesels I've driven over the past 30 years have never
had

an air conditioner failure. The only significant air conditioner failure
we have ever experienced was in a Dodge Caravan my wife previously drove.

Thanks again for the advice and help,
Ned Kleinhenz

I've got a buddy with a firewood processor, logs go in, split pieces come out.
Its much more effective to help him with that and get the friend price than to
do any wood myself. I went over last night and we hauled two pickup loads (more
than a cord) back to my place. It was in the high '70s and I rapidly realized I
should have brought shorts with me...
My trip to the Philippines in June actually helped me acclimate to the temps

Re: [MBZ] 300td compressor failure

2015-08-13 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
i think the business about SPECIAL MERCEDES COMPRESSER is an old
wive's tale unless someone can show me some good documentation

I found this quote:

I called Delphi customer service today and talked with a 30+ year
verteran. He pulled their documentation on the r4 unit and they
recommend installing it with the X in the up position but on the same
hand he said it does not matter. The oil is splashing around in there
so much that the front bearing is going to get some lube on it no
matter where the X is. He stated that in working there for 30 years
that this was the first time anyone has ever asked this question and
that they have a MB trained tech on staff and he reiterated the same
thing - that it should not make any difference in the life of the
compressor. I will be replacing a one year old new locked up
compressor this coming weekend and hopefully will be able to take the
old compressor apart to determine its failure mode.

And on the other hand this:

Any one you get that does NOT come from Mercedes will have the front
bearing cover installed UPSIDE DOWN. Look at the cover on the front
behind the clutch. It will have 4 bolts. Between 2 of the bolts will
be an embossed X. This is the position of the oil hole to lube the
front bearing. The R4 compressor was originally designed for GM cars
with the compressor mounted on top of the engine. The X and the
inlet/outlet port is UP. Mercedes used the compressor but rotated it
180 degrees and mounted it under the engine. This put the ports DOWN.
Then they rotated the front cover so the X is UP. Oil does NOT flow
uphill. If you use an aftermarket compressor with the X down, you will
starve the front bearing of oil. It may last a week, amonth, 6
months depends on the quality of the bearing they put in. I have
received feedback on that information confirming that it is basically
correct. That DOES NOT Mean that if you mount an R-4 upside down, it
will fail prematurely - only that it is much more likely to fail
prematurely if you mount it upside down. I have had many people
dispute this and tell me that, I mounted my compressor without an X on
it and it's still working 10-15 years later. No argument, but there
really is a reason why Mercedes marked their compressors and most of
the guys I've spoken with that do this for a living (and don't want
comebacks) insure that they use compressors configured to work on a
Mercedes. Marshall--Marshall Booth Ph.D.Ass't Prof. (ret.)Univ of

think I would put up motion flood lights that I can turn off. I don't mind
the
light but would like to be able to turn it off.

EPA has not allowed a new refinery to be built in over 25 years anywhere in
the USA. Existing refinery capacity is limited by antiquated equipment

stringent EPA regulations.

BP in Whiting, IN dumped a butt ton of money into their refinery a few years
ago. I suspect this outage is because someone hit the wrong switch or
something.

And yeah, the EPA does get in the way a bit.

Yabut how do you know the laser beam is parallel to the rim of the front wheel?
If the laser is not parallel, all that work means nothing.

Reminds me of a wheel alignment article I saw in a motorcycle magazine in the
1970s.
Tie a string around the front of the wheel, attach the other end to something
you can move around, like a jug of oil.
When the string is just barely touching the back edge of the tire, it's parallel
to the tire.
