FIrst thing wrong: In yurp, the barbarians are not at the gate, they
have been invited inside the gate to wreak havoc as they see fit.
Unfortunately, our dear leader wants the same thing here. It is up
to us to stop the invasion.

Second thing wrong: He asserts there were no W MD in sad dam land.
There were. There were large stores of gas, and it had been used on
the K urds. There was yellow cake, and there was a nuclear program.
The son of an acquaintance was in charge of removing the yellow cake.
It was shipped to Canada. GW wanted to keep it quiet, so they either
went along with the no W MD story, or they invented and propagated
that story line.

Serious terminal rust issues.

Unless this is the last one on the planet, and so rare it is worth being
preserved at all costs, I would not touch this car.

I have in the past restored cars with that much rust visible. It requires
the hand crafting of the destroyed and missing sheet metal parts. 4,000 man
hours later the body work was structurally and visually acceptable. Then
came the frame work which also had the same level of rust damage. The
customer had very deep pockets, and needed them.

Even though the car looked correct, drove correctly, I always felt I
cheated the man because the car should have been scrapped for parts and the
project done with a better car to start with. I knew all the compromises
that had to be made to make it "look right"..

So, thumbs down. besides.. "The doesn't blow cold" ;))

[MBZ] OT: Solar performance - long

2015-11-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Since we had the talk some time ago about Andrew possibly installing some solar
power I thought I'd bring you up to date on the solar installation at camp.As a
reminder Dad installed 1x 100w solar panel, charge controller, 2x 35ah 12v
batteries and an 800w inverter.
The system powers the range hood which sports a 9w CF bulb and a fan which
together pull around 80w running on high and a ceiling fan which pulls about
40w on its one setting. This is measured at the output of the inverter with a
kill-a-watt meter. When its on the inverter itself draws .5a at 12v or about 6w
measured with a multimeter. The inverter also has 2 USB outputs, each draws
.25a at 12v for another 6w when in use. The inverter draws a constant .01a when
idling with the USB ports hot but not in use.

Most recently we had 4 guys for 9 days. Thats 4 cell phones and 4 tablets plus
the wifi hot spot. Something was on the USB ports all the time, in fact I
charged my tablet and phone in my truck because I couldn't get any time inside
for it. So I figure we were using 6w 24 hours a day for 144w. The range hood
light/fan combo ran every morning for about half an hour and the light ran
every evening for about 2 hours, we didn't use the ceiling fan. That'd be 40w
in the morning and 18 in the afternoon giving us a grand total of 202wh or
around 16ah at 12v.
The 100w panel is angled for best capture in mid August at which time it should
make (reliably) 400wh a day. Sadly this time of the year I'd be satisfied if we
were making 1/4 that. We don't have good input monitoring (yet) so lets say
100wh which is possibly generous. Certainly we did start making power about the
time the sun came up with the panel showing constant 12v about half an hour
later and it continued at that rate until the sun was well over the horizon. So
we were using about twice our production. Actually thats true for the sunny
days, I suspect on the cloudy and rainy days we were probably making more like
50wh...
Some of this will be improved by taking down some small trees to the east of
the camp that shade the panel early in the day. There are other much larger
trees which could be removed for more improvement but won't for ascetic
reasons.

Anyway the system behaved as expected, with an 8ah a day deficit voltage sagged
badly so every other day I'd run the charger for awhile to prop it up which was
a PITA.
The extended plan for next year is to add 2x 100w panels and 2x 35ah batteries
though I may push for a third panel instead of the batteries to help during the
cloudy times.
Other add on plans:2x 12v ports, we need more USB capacityammeter for incoming
(ie solar) monitoring. I intend to put this in a box with the 12v portsbattery
voltage monitoring - we currently have an input voltage monitor but not on the
batteries, though in practice the batteries lag the panel by about .2v just
about all the time.

 the
panelhttp://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz353/curtludwig/Camp/IMG_20151113_134636443_HDR_zpshlloz7hl.jpg
batteries, with the backup charger, note that this is actually on the outside
of the camp, directly under the panel and just visible in that
shot.http://i843.photobucket.com/albums/zz353/curtludwig/Camp/IMG_20151113_134715244_zpszvgug8rj.jpg
the brains of the operation, right to left, the inverter with the kill-a-watt
hanging off it feeding the camp through the orange cord is connected to the
charge controller which is connected to the batteries (middle posts) and to the
solar (left side posts) also shown is the solar voltage and under that the
shunt thats supposed to allow us to see solar amperage but that strangely only
seems to work at voltages below 12v.

My younger son is looking to try his hand at loading his own as he has

It is a Browning and I am sorry I do not recall the calibre.

[MBZ] A Mac question

2015-11-15 Thread Curly McLain via Mercedes

Mac ?

I am trying to upgrade the old macbook 1.1 from 10.5 to 10.6 so I can
get a web browser that works.

Thanks to Dan, I have the disk image for the 10.6 install. It won't
boot from the computer; says I have to put it on a disk. It won't
work on a normal dvd, but wants a dual layer DVD+ -. There are no
dual layer blank dvds to be bought in town, unless the univ bookstore
has some tomorrow. None at floormart or at worstbuy. Staples packed
up the tent and left.

I bought a WD "my passport" external drive, and first used it to back
up the machine HD. After the "must burn to disk" warning, i thought
I could put the install file on the external drive and boot from
that. No dice! It seems that the WD external drives made explicitly
for Mac won't boot from a mac. So, what is the mac equivalent of the
MBR from a winders drive?

The next option seems to be a 16 GB USB stick. I've found scripts to
use to make a USB stick bootable using terminal. At this point, and
with 10 dvd DL costing $20-30, it seems like the USB stick may be the
shortest route to success.

Anyone BTDT? What are your thoughts, Mac guys? Thanks

not quite the opposite. The opposing color to green is orange.

However, the 280SE Euro is droolworthy. I bought a wrecked 280SE
euro with the thought of putting the M110 engine in the 220Sb.

My second SDL was burgundy/burgundy leather and that was nice
looking. I only took it to one show, so I sold it.

2015-11-15 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Closer, but technically, the opposite of green is magenta. Burgundy will do
however, since it's NOT green.
I'm always suspicious of a 200K engine compartment that is that clean - and
what's with the matching cam end covers? I think major work has been done,
beyond the claimed maintenance. However, if done correctly, that would be
one cool car . . .

Hmm, that's very interesting, as I have 10.6 on a factory DVD and it's
single layer, the drive in my early Intel books is not dual layer.

how big is the image? If it will fit on a single layer DVD, try using
Disk Utility to burn it. I usually use DragonBurn, it's much faster
and less cranky though.

Thanks Peter. Good thoughts, as usual! It said it is 6.4Gb. I
tried several times using normal dvds. My MBPro 8.1 will burn DL,
but I didn't stop to check the macbook 1.1 combo drive. If it won't
read DL, then the USB may be the only option.

I think I'll try buying a new USB Stick tomorrow.

There is a possibility of using "boot from remote drive" but I have
not researched the requirements for doing so.

The universal disk is bigger than the specifics, the 10.6 disk is DL.

Macs won't boot from a HD unless it's got the OS 'installed' on it.
