That's pretty heinous. Could there have been galvanic action driven by the
botched wiring to the solenoid?

I wondered about the fluid as well. I’ll have it tested tomorrow. It is the
right color but I don’t remember if I have ever changed it in this car. The
odd thing is that I did not see this build up 2 weeks earlier when I had the
part out to check for holes in the diaphragm.

My adventure was trying to figure out why the SDL hates me.

This has happened before. I got in after she had been sitting for a
few weeks. Figured I should give her legs a stretch. I gave her a
glow, then tried to light off. Everything went dead. No lights, no
dash, nothing. All manner of key turns, and nothing. Drove the other
w126. When I got back, I hoped everything had reset, but it had not.
Plugged the charger in and set it on 50amp light off. Everything
behaved, and she lit off.

Battery was not dead. A little low on power when hooked to the charger
at 1amp. Five hours later, it is all topped up. Maybe I need to chase
wires and see if there is corrosion.

[MBZ] OT - lights for the shop/hangar

2018-02-01 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I was looking for more and brighter light for the hangar - I'm tired of
straining to see what I'm working on, and my eyes aren't what they used to
be.
I ran across this on Amazon, and it seemed to be a lot of light per $. I
bought one to try - seemed too good to be true - and liked it so much that
I ordered ten more.

Re: [MBZ] Today's Fun - Cars & Guns

2018-02-01 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
My adventure was trying to figure out why the SDL hates me.

This has happened before. I got in after she had been sitting for a few weeks.
Figured I should give her legs a stretch. I gave her a glow, then tried to
light off. Everything went dead. No lights, no dash, nothing. All manner of
key turns, and nothing. Drove the other w126. When I got back, I hoped
everything had reset, but it had not. Plugged the charger in and set it on
50amp light off. Everything behaved, and she lit off.

Battery was not dead. A little low on power when hooked to the charger at
1amp. Five hours later, it is all topped up. Maybe I need to chase wires and
see if there is corrosion.

[MBZ] 85 300D monovalve

2018-02-01 Thread Michael Esh via Mercedes
I just replaced the damaged mono valve on the car. The one I just took out has
a blue/green crusty substance all over the screen and any metal part. This is
new in the last week. This stuff was not there a week ago. What would cause
this? The only change was putting a valve in with poorly soldered solenoid. I
pulled it apart last week and ruined the connections.
The latest symptoms are good heat at below 2000 RPM’s but then heat would cut
out completely at any thing over 2000. Fan would stay on just heat out the
vents.
I’ll test out the new monovave assembly I received from Andrew tomorrow
morning.

Gary was best at that.

I remember getting parts when I worked at Becker and the label said “Becker

Re: [MBZ] Facelift 210 wagon

2018-02-01 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
Much the same as the W210. There are a couple of things unique to them, like
supercharger bearings and folding top microswitch boots, as with the yellow
example, but they’re all minor.

Probably the worst thing with the R170 is the crappy plastic they used for the
center consoles, in which the color fades in fairly short order. Painting
consoles is getting to be pretty common, but it’s a cosmetic thing, not
functional.

[MBZ] My Two Cars

2018-02-01 Thread Bob Rentfro via Mercedes
So it looks more like I will be going to Dubai instead of Michigan. That being
the case, I think I will need to sell my two cars. I think I will give all you
clowns first crack at them.
1998 E300D, 312K miles, zero rust, white/blue MB Tex, two small spots of clear
coat peeling, steering rack and fuel hoses/o-rings replaced 18 months ago. If I
were to put it on CL, I’d ask $3000 and see what happend.
2005 E320 185K, again zero rust, on its third fuel tank on the recall, needs
fuel filler neck (found small crack via smoke test so now the check engine
light is on), almost at the point of needing rubber bits in the front end, uses
about 1.25 quarts between oil changes. A lady bumped into me a couple months
ago so there is a slight scratch on drivers front fender above the wheel and a
smudge on the wheel. CL listing for this would likely be $3450.

If any of you jamokes are interested send me an email and I’ll supply pictures.

2018-02-01 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
W210 quality. Chrysler hadn’t gotten ahold of Daimler at that time. More
plastic than earlier models, but these have the reliability and longevity of
the W210 chassis’ cars for the most part.

2003 and later were W220 build quality.

2018-02-01 Thread Rick Knoble via Mercedes
Barrister Snook inquires:

>‎So, what are the problems on these?

The biggest issues are the transmission conductor plate and related wiring
(<$300 DIY fix) and the front spring perches (mounts). I suspect they are an
under $100 fix for the proficient welder. Either of these failures are deemed
catastrophic by most unwitting owners, because shops don't want to touch either
repair for under fifteen hundred bucks. I have seen examples of these cars (gas
not diesel) listed for sale with over 350k miles.

You will tire of driving it before it breaks.

Re: [MBZ] Facelift 210 wagon

2018-02-01 Thread Dan--- via Mercedes
I have a first gen (1998) W210 wagon and a second gen (2002) sedan.

No problems on these of any significance. Purely “gas and go” cars that require
a minimal amount of maintenance and repairs. I got both of my cars last year
and haven’t had to do anything to speak of on either outside of normal
maintenance.

My 1998 wagon has 175k on it, my 2002 sedan in the high 90k range.

I’m doing the first real “repair” on my wagon this week, which wasn’t
necessarily needed, but I’m doing it anyway - new front shocks to replace the
original shocks that are on it (but still working OK).

I did put motor mounts and spark plugs on the sedan when I got it, but they
weren’t to the point of absolutely needing replacement. I let my inner Martha
get the better of me. Under $300 in OE parts to do it all.

I loves my W210s so much that I’m looking for something else that I can tinker
with, because they need nothing

Re: [MBZ] OT - proposed new rule

2018-02-01 Thread ROGER HALE via Mercedes
So, would this new rule be considered a form of censorship on this list? It
would seem that if you don't like FB, do what I do, ignore it. But taking the
possibility away from others seems a bit harsh. I don't like BAT, but I
haven't asked for it to be censored on this list. Loosen up folks, it's not
the end of the world yet. Travel more with Mark Twain and eventually nothing
will bother you. Just another opinion.

Best wishes,
