When we moved to FL in 1996 our mail carrier was a good ‘old cracker woman 
(“cracker” being a term applied to native Floridian pioneer settlers) who had 
done the route for decades. “Miss Donna” knew my kids, me, and all the 
neighbors. She always had time to stop and chat a little on her route, was 
always prompt, and kept things straight.

Fast forward to 2010, when we returned to Florida and the same neighborhood 
from two years in IN. Sure enough, Miss Donna came to the door the first week 
we returned and rekindled our friendship. I could do things like leave a note 
in the mailbox for her to come to the door and ring the bell because I had a 
Priority Mail box I needed to send out that day. That was the kind of carrier 
she was. She ultimately retired on disability, I believe, because she had a bad 
knee. The last week she did her route she had those USPS white tubs in her 
truck filled with gifts from all the neighbors.

I moved a couple blocks away a few years ago and at this house we’ve got the 
same setup with a carrier. “Miss Ginny” is a cracker lady who has been doing 
the mail in this area for decades as well. Super nice, always pleasant, never 
screws up. Comes to the door for my Priority Mail packages as well. She’s up in 
years, so I’m not sure how munch longer we’ll have her, but she’s great. 
There’s a young man of color who also does the route on Miss Ginny’s days off, 
who does a good job and is pretty talkative, but he’s not Miss Ginny.

We’ve got a really good postmaster at our post office, too. I can’t recall the 
details, but I had some sort of shenanigans going on with the USPS a few years 
back that I had to escalate up to him, and he did a really good job sorting 
things out and communicating.

We have a little rural post office a few miles away in Turkey Creek. It’s one 
of those places where it’s two rooms, a lobby with PO boxes and another with 
the sorting and counter. The person at the counter is the postmaster. I’ll 
often go over there if I have to ship something during the holidays so I don’t 
have to go to our big local PO that’s always crazy this time of year. The rural 
PO you just walk into, do your business and leave.

I got a bundle of those yellow microfiber towels at Costco as well. Use them 
all over the place.

I use some sort of aerosol foamy glass cleaner, as that’s what’s recommended by 
my window film guys. It’s not expensive and it does a great job, never streaks 
like Windex. I’ll see what it’s called and post it. I think I get it at Wally 
World.

 Is the dash on an MB vinyl? I thought it was just regular old plastic.
Anyway, up here in the frozen north dashes don't crack. The only cracked dash 
cars I've had came from the south.
I do follow up the windex cleaning with 303...

Typical behavior that I experienced there as well. There’s no logic to many of 
the member’s thought processes, and what’s worse is that few, if any, are 
interested or willing to listen to someone with direct experience.

There’s no way I would set foot in any of those groups again. They’re a total 
waste of space. The sad part is that they’re polluting an audience of people 
who are equally lazy or stupid (or both) that have these cars and are likely to 
do damage to them if they follow their direction.

wet, then use one towel to smear the windex all around and pick up the goo. 
Then three or four more to get all the windex off.

As mentioned the red one has some rust, but not anything that a lot of
other 115s have. My thought is it’s worth fixing. To really do it right
would probably be to strip it down to the metal though. Looks like some
paint got chipped and started rusting under that trim price. Or could be a

the bonnet pretty much exposed the whole engine and front frame. You just had 
to be careful not to bang your head on the XKE bonnet. XKE bonnets were very 
heavy and not well balanced as far as the pivot point for opening them.

I loved working on XKEs, it was like working on a vintage domestic car where 
you could almost sit in the engine compartment. Except for the front of the 
engine, that was one area that was tight.

If you want tight, try working on an XJ12. Much like this car, there was barely 
enough room to extend your fingers into the gap between the side of the engine 
and the inner fender. G-d forbid you have to work on the front of the engine, 
like a water pump. That involved practically removing the front clip.

[MBZ] On other E500 news

Since I had the DAS hooked up I went through the procedure to reset the new 
conductor plate/TCM. I can’t drive the car since it’s slammed but I got no 
error codes so that’s progress. It seemed to shift easily enough into D and R. 

Interestingly if you know what you’re doing you can go in with the DAS and set 
all the shifting parameters. I looked at it but didn’t touch. The kid offered 
to set up some kind of “performance” profile but I declined. I guess I could do 
it if he gave me the values.

One of the more less known functions of DAS and transmissions is the “fill 
time” parameter that’s listed for the car. It’s a really good way to get an 
idea of wear on the transmission, as when it wears the fill times increase and 
get towards the end of the time ranges.

You can tinker with a lot of the parameters in there since most of the bootleg 
DAS systems have developer mode enabled, but you better know what you’re doing. 
One of the guys on the E500 board is an absolute wizard on all the settings for 
the W211, and he’s figured out all sorts of cool things you can do to add 
features in places like the instrument cluster, transmission and climate 
controls.

I would add that as Mercedes got more and more “electronificated” there are 
more opportunities to enable features that the car didn’t originally come with. 
For example, my ML350 didn’t have rain sensing wipers. Everything is there for 
them, they’re just not enabled in DAS if the car wasn’t spec’ed out with them. 
I enabled them and now I have rain sensor wipers.

[MBZ] Im thinking about it…Re: two Mercedes-Benz as a package deal

[Buggered Benzmail via Mercedes]

So I reached out to the guy. Says he wants to buy a Maserati (!!!) and just 
needs the money. A kid I guess livin da life. He’s been very open about the 
deal, sent me more pics and VIN and such. The S550 has 160k CLK 250k, high but 
for the money… he says they run and drive for whatever that’s worth. 

I’m thinking about a road trip to CLT end of the week. My old college roommate 
is up there, have not seen him for ages so could be fun. It’s more money than I 
really want to spend but the CLK could be a quick flip to offset part of the 
deal.  I’ve been thinking about a cheap W221 just for grins so this could be an 
“entry level“ and could probably flip it too and make some $$.  

My only concern is the pack of Newports on the S550 seat…

I think the pump has failed as it won’t put out enough pressure (only 4ish bar) 
and it’s supposed to go to 6-10 or 13-16 in the reservoir. So I guess I need a 
new pump. Bah humbug. $120 off the Scary Wymyn.

ozone generator that can be used well into the future on both cars and houses.

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. I’m trying to convince myself to check these 
cars out. I missed that $2200 E320 that wouldn’t start, I guess he sold it over 
the weekend. That would have been a good deal if all it needed was the CPS
