You can for generic OBDII codes but that'll only give you the most generic
information. For real troubleshooting you want at least a high end code reader
like Snap on, or the real MB.

That said I've got a really cheap OBDII reader that connects to my phone and
it's paid for itself many times over...

Re: [MBZ] Lifts

2022-02-15 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Most 4 post lifts have some sort of additional lifting magic to pick up on the
frame to allow other work.I'm a fan of the Wildfire lifts, they have a sliding
air jack that can travel the length of the lift and pick stuff up. I really
like that the whole lift can be picked up and repositioned easily. My someday
plans include one for the big barn up north.

Re: [MBZ] Lifts

2022-02-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
These 4-posts have an optional tray that sits either end on the ramps
and slides along forward and back, you can put a jack on a crossmember
or diff then jack up the car and drop it onto jackstands and remove
wheels. They have a scissor lift made for it but a bottle jack or
smaller floor jack would work too (if you could get the pump handle in
there).  Makes them quite versatile for storage and servicing (not ideal
but pretty good and fairly safe as the car isn't going to drop on you).
And since you can move it up and down you could do a trans/engine drop
from below too.  The ramps are still in the way to some extent but for a
lot of jobs would not be an issue.  And you can put casters on them too
to move the whole thing around (sans car) so that gives some additional
space utilization flexibility as they are not fixed in place like a 2-post.

Some 4 posts have the option to remove wheel and jack up from the ramp but you
still have the ramp in the way. 4 post also takes up more real estate in the

it wasn’t worth it for me mostly because I didn’t have the equipment and
knowledge to remove, move and re-install.

Re: [MBZ] Lifts

2022-02-15 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
My brother in law has a neighbor who is a big Ford fanatic. He’s got a couple
of Mustangs that he parks on the four post parking lifts in his garage. It’s a
pretty nice setup although using one for servicing a vehicle precludes the
ability to do anything with the wheels or suspension, since they’re a “drive
on” lift. I’m not sure it’s that big of a deal, but I can see where it would be
a compromise.

Having the additional parking/storage space would be nice, however.

[MBZ] 1972 Mercedes-Benz C-Class C 250 Coupe 2D,$8,000

2022-02-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

   Seller's Description

Facebook won't let me post the correct model type. This is a 1972
Mercedes 250C W114. It has the 2.5L(M114) with a twin Weber carb. I also
have the OEM Zenith carb in the trunk if wanted to make factory spec.
This is a rare car. Only 67.048 coupés were made from 1969 to 1976
against 1,852,008 saloons. Of these 24,669 were "280CE" and 42,379
"250CE" worldwide. This car comes equipped with an automatic
transmission with the hard to find column shifter rather than the center
shifter. It is a four speed automatic. When I got the car it didn't even
run or drive. The engine wasn't working and the transmission was dead.
It has been garaged kept since owning it and now it is running and
driving; but unfortunately haven't had time to restore the body. All
electrics work fine, all four windows are powered and work. The car has
some body rust in the lower panels and will need restoring. Comes with a
clean title, W114 manuals, 2 sets of rims(rare chrome monoblocks rims
and the OEM caps and tires like the last example picture shown)

Subject: [MBZ] Oil Cooler Leak Repair ( 2012 ML350 Bluetec )

Well all I am in the process of trying to change the seals on my Ml 350 BT. I
am getting a good feel for why this is such and expensive repair job with
limited access and the number of parts that need to be removed. In the process
I have had to remove the air control assembly that delivers the intercooled air
to the intake manifold. There is a larger amount of soot buildup the second
photo came from the inlet of the intake manifold that I could reach and haven’t
touched the assembly that is shown in photo 1. I did see some oil in the inlet
to the turbo intake side as well as the transferee tube to the intercooler. May
just replace crankcase ventilation valve while I have things apart. The
exterior of this valve is quite oily. Car has about 87K miles on it. I have
three more screws to remove before I can remove the turbo, one of which I can
not see.

Will try and give an update in a day or two.

Perhaps a morbid observation, but with retiring mechanics, and independent auto
shops closing, you may want to check estate auctions near you for lifts. I have
seen several sold recently, fairly cheap. I currently don't have room for one.

Re: [MBZ] Lifts

2022-02-15 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Yeah I was looking at those AMGO 2-posts and they have 3 different
extension heights for the lift pads that will give up to another 5in.
They have an extension for the bar that connects the top too so you can
get a tall vehicle up higher but obviously you would need a higher
rafter height too. https://www.amgohyd.com/product/oh-9-two-post-lift/

The stackable rubber pads package with 1.5″, 2.5″, 5″ extension adapters.

Optional Height Extension Kits With this kits, the height can be adjusted
from 3821mm(150 1/2″)to 4431mm(174 1/2″) Kits

They have 4-post "parking" lifts too that have up to 85.5" lifting
height.  You can work on stuff under the car on those (and park another
car under them), and they have a jack tray so you can lift the car up
and take off wheels too so that would be handy but would not be as
flexible as a 2-post. https://www.amgohyd.com/product/408-hp/  I guess
that is a standard option for these 4-posts.

Clearly one would need both kinds!

More an effect of emissions controls. In particular EGR. EGR reduces NOX
emissions in diesels, but it makes a mess of the intake manifold. In manifolds

Since I am tall I would like a lift that gets enough room under a car
for me to walk without banging my head or stooping over, which means

It’s all about procedures, man. Doing the same thing, over and over and over,
without change. When you’re done with your work, you go through the checklist
line by line.

Just like flying. No shortcuts or you get hurt or die.

Be careful with the stands. I hear that people have forgotten to remove them
and lowered car with stands in place. The results were disastrous to say the
least. One guy had one stand in place and didn’t engage locks. He accidentally
nudged the release lever and the car fell off lift.

Re: [MBZ] Lifts

I don’t know. I have only done this a couple of times. It should feel balanced.
Not be more tippy one end vs the other. It’s not an exact science.

With a car properly center on your lift how much does it move when you push the

Re: [MBZ] Lifts

2022-02-15 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
Depending upon whether lift is symmetrical or asymmetrical, you pull car in
more forward or not. Either way, the requirement is that you lift car a short
distance and rock both ends to determine if it’s tippy before you continue to
raise to full height. Things such as payload in a truck etc can affect the
center of gravity as does the removal of an engine or rear axle. Asymmetrical
design and you pull in to align column up to around the a pillar ( this allows
more room to open door) with symmetrical you pull in closer to b pillar but
somewhere between a and b pillar. This leaves less room to open door. Mohawk
now only makes symmetrical lifts (Jaime was able to get one of their last
asymmetrical lifts, I didn’t make the cutoff and so I got the symmetrical) but
their columns are spaced out further away from each other than other lifts
leaving more room to open doors.

Re: [MBZ] Lifts

2022-02-15 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Heh. I can’t look now, I’ve been spending money there to excess. Gotta throttle
back a bit, but in the near future I might consider it. I’ll be out there next
week so I’ll check the rafter height.

Thanks!

Re: [MBZ] Lifts

2022-02-15 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
It seems to me that with a 2-post lift it is going to be important that the
lift arms are placed so that the weight of the car is balanced front to back.
The two steel posts can easily support the weight straight down, but if the car
isn't balanced there will be a torque on the posts as the car wants to fall
forwards or backwards, and you are relying on the floor bolts and the concrete
to support that.

I am surprised that the better lifts don't have some way of indicating that the
load is too far out of balance. Or do they?

columns must be 4-8 inches away from control joints depending on lift
manufacturer specs. Mohawk btw requires lowest ceiling clearance of all the

Re: [MBZ] Lifts

2022-02-15 Thread Dimitri Seretakis via Mercedes
Nussbaum is a German company but their US line is made in NC I believe. There
is a contact, Peter Engel who is an MB enthusiast who sells them. They have the
most flexibility with articulated rear arms as an option in the Otto series.
Pierre Hedary bought his Nussbaum from Peter and I almost did as well but I
couldn’t find an installer in Maine familiar with Nussbaum so I opted for a
Mohawk. Mohawk is the most robust forever lift but costs a small fortune. My
brother went in on it with me to help with the cost. Rotary is the mainstream
lift that most dealers use, has the widest dealer network but is not as
interesting as a Nussbaum and doesn’t have the same degree of arm articulation.
Personally, I think a Mohawk with the least amount of arm extension options is
just fine. It’s built like a tank and only needs periodic spray down with wd40
as maintenance. Yes factory manual specifically says wd40! You install it and
forget about it. No cables to adjust or plastic carriage slider blocks to
replace as with rotary, Nussbaum and all others.

What does the other side look like? Are there actually rivets or is it

Assuming they are rivets, are they pop rivets? Are they aluminum? Did
they corrode underneath?

Re: [MBZ] Oil Cooler Leak Repair ( 2012 ML350 Bluetec )

Is the soot the result of not driving it hard enough? Short trips, in
town etc.

Re: [MBZ] Cell phones

2022-02-15 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
There is very little speed advantage except at the very high (and very short
range) frequencies, which also do not penetrate glass or wood or brick/concrete.

I don’t see any real improvement in service any time soon, especially for rural
areas. 1x was great for actual telephone service, as long as you were at least
as close as a couple miles you got a strong signal. I can see the Verizon
tower from my house and never have more than three bars of signal strength….

5G is mostly marketing, and in an era when we should be reducing electrical
consumption to reduce greenhouse gases, uses a lot more electricity to run.

Gotta love the toy business, eh?

Anybody want to buy an unlocked SE, XR, or 11 for 80% of what I was
going to list them for on SWAPPA?

Yes, my iPhone 4S was what I was using at the time. The new

As I understand, here are (at least) two parts to 5G. The mm wave
that is very short range - but also 600 MHz. T-mobile got a big
chunk of the formerly TV spectrum from 614-698 MHz. And they have
been investing and building in rural areas with these
frequencies. So T-Mobile coverage from 2 years could be quite
different than now.
