There's one that softens the shifts at idle (for downshifts as you coast to a stop) and when its lever arm wears through, it softens *all* the shifts. Partial-throttle upshifts got noticably firmer when I fixed this on my '83 300D.

anybody have any leads, preferably in the midwest area, so we (friend and I) can check it out? My parish priest wants one. He loves my SD and one of his teachers in the school (a MOPAR nut) got a great deal on a nice 240D a few months back. (He already replaced both axles (one was bad and he figured he might as well do them both because they were cheap and easy - MB axles too)) and upgraded the read diff for more speed in 4th - MOPAR guys make good diesel converts). With 9 diesel MB's (newest being 1985) gracing the Church parking lot, Father Dean wants to sell his Toyota and jump on the bandwagon. Any help is appreciated. I use a headlight modulator on my BMW K1200LT. It flashes the headlight during daylight hours. Couple that with my riding style, which is: Always assume the driver can't see you. We had a driving method taught by my basic motorcycle instructor: Think what if. What if the car next to me comes over in my lane, what if the car waiting at the stop sign pulls out, what if every scenario. Make it become second nature to plan an escape route. I find myself using those techniques while in the car as well. I may have strayed off the original thread, but felt compelled to add my .02. The battery is about a year old, and has always been strong. But as you mention it I noticed that for my second start this morning [first start was fine when I moved EM from the shed to the driveway to troubleshoot the blinker / buzzer] it cranked very slowly for a few turns - longer than it has ever taken start. Turned the key off and on and it started right up as usual. I'll have the battery checked also. For those familiar with such things, I could hope it is something that sounds easier. Any other suggestions? As has been mentioned before, first potential culprit is dirty contacts inside the hazard switch, second is a bad battery or contacts to same, and third would be a bad blinker itself. Note that my experience with our 560 SL and my attempt to make a louder clacker for top-off driving indicates that a slight load on the blinker itself (such as a dirty switch that has some conductivity when it shouldn't, or a badly-placed extra relay there for noise purposes) results in a weird muted buzzing. That'd be my fourth suspect. -- Jim

I've forgotten exactly which VW we're talking about, but the A1 and A2 chassis cars (older Rabbit, Golf, and Jetta) have a shift linkage that was apparently licensed from Rube Goldberg. It frequently gets sloppy due to accumulated wear in the various bushings and links, but can be pretty easily restored. It *should* have a positive action and well-defined gate -- if it's sloppy and the gears are hard to find, it just needs some work. Re: [MBZ] Hey LT Don...How's the VW?
Sweet. Everyone I've ever met who has had dealings with those engines has loved them. The company (Air Liquide, I think [I can barely spell English let alone French for Pete's sake]) who delivers liquid N2 to the old nuke plant had an entire fleet of trailers with those engines mounted beneath them to run the compressors and coolers and offloading pumps. The drivers loved them because the never failed. Good luck on Monday. Bob -- Starter went in today. I had to go over and assist the mech with putting together the ball bearings / race of the half shaft. Jeff had spent an hour on it and gave up in frustration, and I spent two hours studying the assembly of the removed version. Suddenly the light bulb went off -- turn the race sideways and slide in, instead of trying to do everything flat -- and in a few seconds I was instant hero. Tomorrow, we install the new half shaft then drive the car over to where Jeff works (Goodyear). There, we put the car up on the lift and Jeff will fabricate a new exhaust system. Bleed the brakes, fix slow leak in one tire, maybe do a coolant change, and I can drive it to work on Monday morning. I am really impressed with the VW diesel engine. Pre-glow is single-digit seconds, not the minute or so that I am used to with the 240D. Idle is smooth. I can't wait to take it up thru the 5 speeds to see how well the clutch works and how smooth the shifting is. On 1/28/06, Bob Rentfro [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hey LT Don, how's the VW doing? Re: [MBZ] Wiper blades
Just curious... why not buy the OE blade assembly from Rusty (or your local dealer), they just get the OE/dealer refills in the future? Or buy a couple of refills with the blade so you're all set for a few years. On some models (like the early 124's) this is about the only way to get a blade that fits perfectly. On a side note, I hear that applying Formula 303 periodically can make them last longer - not sure if it helps much or not. :) -dm -- Date: Sat, 28 Jan 2006 09:58:49 -0500 From: Marshall Booth [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Wiper blades Both of the Bosch blades work well for my cars (I preferred the Excels when they were available), but the Excel assemblies are no longer available for my '85+ 190Ds with monowipers. Re: [MBZ] 12 Cyl 600S?
I saw one once in Cambridge, MA that the guy (an old dude obviously with lots of cash, was kind of a gold chain and pinky ring type) had mounted this large crystal and silver hood ornament on. The crystal base was a hexagon or something, about 4 dia with flutings like an old roman column, and the silver winged thing on top stood another 6' tall or so, and was about that wide. I could not really tell what it was supposed to be, but it looked like hell. I thought a seagull had impaled itself on the hood, but it was worse than that -- almost as bad as they way his wife looked. A Touch of Class as the Italians liked to announce via a plate on the front of the car, sometimes with a red rose behind the letters. No offense to any Italians out there, but if you live around Cambridge, Reveah, Summahvull, Meffuh, etc you know exactly what I mean. This guy looked like a paving or hauling contractor. --R Kaleb C. Long wheelbase. Didn't pay much attention 'til I saw the uncharacteristic V12 emblem on the side (I think behind the rear passenger window) (the style of the lettering was what looked funny to me). The model badge on the back read 600S if I recall. Is this legit? Incidentally, the license plate read PRES. [MBZ] Mono Wiper Info Request
With recent talk of monowipers I am reminded that mine needs help. The motor is sluggish at best. I'm thinking maybe something in the gearbox (or not in the gearbox ie lubrication) is causing the slow-down. I have a spare gearbox and the original fried-looking motor that came in my 1986 190D 2.5 Euro. When the switch indicates high speed position, the wipers move very slowly, when it indicates slow speed, the wipers move faster, in the delay position, it does nothing at all. I will be looking things over in a couple of hours and checking the pin-out on the electrical connector. I have been using RainX, which is a wonderful product, in lieu of wipers. It works great over 35-40mph but I really want my wipers to function correctly. Any information, tips/tricks deeply appreciated. Johnny B. Thats what I thought too. For a a 617.95 engine in the 116 chasis it still calls for two different numbers, that look the same when you open the box. In a 126 chasis they are the same number. Re: [MBZ] I guess everyone else is as busy as I was
After I swapped to M1 ATF for PS fluid, the steering was a tad easier. The stinky part was gasket on the lid evidently didn't like the M1 and it began to seep a tad and I didn't notice it until I lifted the hood to check the oil one day and everything was wicked dust caked (desert, remember...we are at 103 days without rain). I need to get some gasket material and make a new one. By the wayare you all settled and back to the daily grind Johnny B?
