[MBZ] My Clutch ...

2006-02-16 Thread Howard Fulford
Last week, my 190E clutch release bearing noise changed from a 'a bit
squeaky in the morning' to a full-blooded scream every time I changed gear

I suspected that the bearing had seized-up

Here's what my local MB dealer found when they changed the whole clutch -
sorry for the appalling picture quality, but I'm sure you'll get the idea !

c) I would not freak if red neck in truck backs into it in the snowy/

Fed Ex just left me a wonderful package. Inside were all the little
bits Rusty sent so that Gump could be back on the road. I think I will
spend the frozen day tomorrow installing the pan. I did have one
problem. For some reason I am not able to get the drain plug that came
with the pan installed. Has there been an upgrade to either the pan or
the bolt in the past such that maybe the old bolts are too large for
the new pans, or the new pans are too tight for old model bolts. This
bolt just seems too large to fit the tiny hole, and IIRC the original
pan had a much larger plug that was hex keyed.

Part number on the bolt is 1 111-997-03-30. Did I order the wrong
thing?

Re: [MBZ] Exploding Glowplugs

2006-02-16 Thread Loren Faeth
I have never heard of this with the smaller GPs. In 93 when we were moving
from HI to IA we were driving the diesel escort and the 200D (OM 621) from
Seattle to IA. Both were fully loaded/overloaded. Going over the
mountains somewhere, I had the guts of a GP blow out. It was weird as all
get out. A huge bang, and then terrific noise until I got the engine shut
down.

I had a suspicion what it was before i confirmed it, because years ago my
dad had a old Ford F-500 that averaged 2000 miles to the engine. One or
two of the engines had a habit of blowing out the right rear spark plug
with a huge bang and a terrible racket like a broken crank or a broken rod.

On this engine, I had the pencil type conversion for the Large body
plugs. The center had blown out clean. I never found any reason that it
happened. I already knew the engine probably had cracked rings. I think
it was #3. On OM 621, #3 seems to always be a problem. Most of the loop
and pencil type plugs seem to fail at #3 position. I changed it on the
roadside. After we got to Iowa we parked it until we confirmed the
compression problem and converted it to a 616 engine. I have never heard
of repeated glow plug blowouts. The guess of a relay problem sounds
reasonable to me.

pressure drop, so they wisely pulled off and shut the motor down. ()

Car was also running very rough after this.

Looking at the motor, they found one of the glow plugs had shot it's guts
out of the retaining collar, and showed oil.

They had replaced the glowplugs recently (Bocsh, without using a chamber
reamer) and so happened to have the old plugs with them, so they replaced
it, which temporarily cured the problems.

During the rest of the trip home, it happened 3 MORE times, from a total of
3 cylinders, one twice, using up the 3 remaining plugs. The new replacement
plugs that were in there were left only with the threaded collar that
mates to the engine's glow plug hole threads, as if it were removed and
drilled out.

No in-motor element was found, no threaded tip the wire harness connects to.
(I guess it was still bolted to the wire)

Now the car won't start. They haven't used any ether.

Wild huh? Could this be a results of a failing glow plug relay in the way
that it does't shut the power down to the plugs, thus overcooking the
daylights out of them, or result of unremoved carbon shorting them out into
short life with the same results?

I'm looking for experiences or theories behind this unusual event, I have
not yet been able to test the relay operation. I'm worried about pre-chamber
damage, plug elements floating around in the motor, and the oil leaking from
the plug holes.

Any ideas? Thanks.

2006-02-16 Thread Jim Cathey
My 190D had the same problem rust-wise. Muffler shops I contacted
weren't

interested in repairing, said it would be too expensive. Told me that a
new pipe was available and quoted that price at something like $200
installed.

This would be a drop-off kind of proposition, they'd do it I'm
sure. Same place that fabbed the pieces for the genset's exhaust
system. I'd do it entirely myself except I don't have the requisite
pipe bender.

Needless to say, rusty beat that - think the part arrived kaleb style
(pipe

with a shipping label) on my porch for around fifty bucks.

That doesn't sound too bad. If I can't frankenstein together the
two exhaust systems I already have maybe I'll go that way.

More progress:

...Later today I went back out and finished removing the transmission.
Harder than it looked, there were _four_ bolts left, not two, and
I managed to break off the throttle cable attachment. The 2-foot
socket extensions and the swivel joint were, as before, instrumental
in getting all the bolts out. Also as before, my CCPOS transmission
jack is too tall, and the tranny was trapped beneath the car. But
with enough fooling around, and partial disassembly of the jack's
cradle, I was able to get it wrestled to the ground. Of interest
is that this is a _used_ transmission, both it and the torque
converter have grease paint numbers scrawled on them. Obviously
it didn't hold up too well.

Marshall, thanks for your input. There certainly could be other
factors. I had changed glow plugs, timing chain, valve seals, fuel
filters, battery, starter and probably a few other things with no
change. Many of these were changed for other reasons, but some were
changed to chase the starting problem. I really thought going from a 300K
chain to a new chain would make a difference, but it made none. I even
tried a visual GP inspection with the injectors removed. All the glow
plugs lit up evenly and went to white hot.

Mine would start firing, probably on the third compression stroke, but run
very rough. It acted like it was starved for fuel, but all the fuel system
seemed to check out. When I pulled out the pin for the purple wire, it made
more difference than anything else did, but it did not cure the
problem. In my case, pulling the purple wire did make a difference in
smoking and it also helped with the low power and rough running. Even in
20 below weather, my 603 has always started even without the heater
plugged in. In below zero weather it was hard to keep it running when
first started. It would start just fine, then loose power, and seemed to
run on 3, 4, or 5 cylinders, then gradually pick up the weak
cylinders. Remember this engine tested out to 425 PSI compression on all
cylinders. When i replaced the o-rings, two broke when taking them off and
one was severely eroded for about 1/3 of the diameter. This is consistent
with missing on 1-3 cylinders depending on conditions.

Marshall, I am so impressed with the result of this operation, I am willing
to wager that your TD will start on the first compression stroke also after
you change o-rings, seals and delivery valve springs.

Dave, I will keep you posted. The next two day should be telling as we go
back in the deepfreeze.

I told Rusty tonight that I am pushing o-rings springs and copper seals for

 each winter.

I consulted the list and was told to disconnect or cut the purple wire to
the Glow relay to make a low budget afterglow system.

I have been meaning to replace the o-rings on the IP delivery valves for
 quite a while.

I finally did the job and wanted to pass on the results.

John W. Reames III [EMAIL PROTECTED] did a nice write-up for the 606
engine, and most of it also applies to the 603. Marshall added a caution
to the write-up. I did it without removing the intake manifold, 603. I
did

remove the air pipe form the turbo to the intake manifold. Take loose Inj
line clips at the bolts. Push the back 3 lines aside, but don't try to
remove them from the manifold with the unbolted holders still clipped to
the line. The front 3 lines come out with the clip as a unit. Since I
replaced all the plastic clips about a year ago, i didn't want to
disturb them.

As per the write-up, I replaced the copper seals, the o-rings and the
Delivery valve springs. I did loose a couple of the old springs on
disassembly, but did not drop any of the new ones. I took out all the
valve bodies, cleaned up the IP top again , and cleaned the valve bodies
after taking off the o-rings. As a matter of habit, I keep everything in
order so it goes back in the same position. Reassembly was easy. I used
the spring to center the valve and the copper ring in the IP body, then
carefully lowered the body over it. I screwed the body in by hand. The
o-rings should seat while turning it in by hand. I then backed it out a
sisth of a turn or so and retightened them a couple of times by hand to
seat the o-rings. I repeated this for each delivery valve.

When they were all in, then I tightened, loosened, tightened, loosened,
and
then tightened to final torque. I stayed just below the torque
spec. This

procedure is similar for older 4 cyl IP delivery valves.

After getting everything back together and getting the air bled out. it
started and I had no knocks.

THE END RESULT: The car starts instantaneously. No smoking when cold. I
am convinced I can plug the purple wire back in again. This will prolong
 the GP life

It is supposed to be getting very cold in the next few nights, So i
 will see how it goes.

If you have a 603 and smoking or rough running on low temp cold starts I'd
highly recommend changing the Delivery valve o-rings. I intend to do
it on

the TD as soon as I can.

 Hope this is helpful

The oil coming out is a concern. I would speculate that it could be diesel
fuel mixing with carbon and looking black like motor oil. If it is motor
oil indeed, then there is a serious problem. crack, hole in piston or a
really bad score on the cylinder. Diesel fuel mixed with carbon soot is
not a concern, as the fuel will be burned in normal combustion. I think i
had that on my 200D that had a plug blowout. It was 12 years ago so the
memory is not clear. Shipping the cars and some household stuff, the trip
across country and coming to Iowa right after the great flood were more
memorable.

If the O rings deteriorate, fuel flows out of the pump (I have had
this happen several times on my cars and have seen it on a dozen others)
and onto the ground (or onto the under engine shields). I've seen little
influence of O ring failures on the engine starting or power (don't
recall ever noticing any effect in really cold weather - I never allowed
the pump to leak for more than a few days or weeks at most) although I
expect some effect could be measured. Fuel economy drops a LOT as fuel
runs across the top down the side of the pump! The O rings either seal
so the fuel can't escape to the outside or they don't. If they don't
permit fuel to flow out, there should be NO further influence on the
operation of the engine. I feel sure that the major improvement in
starting you see (providing the O rings didn't allow fuel to flow onto
the surface of the pump) resulted from replacing the copper delivery
valve seals.

If this holds up, you have defined a test for delivery valve seal
function. There really is NO test except to put the injection pump on a
test stand. In the past, the procedure was usually to check out
everything and if everything else is fine - then replace the delivery
valve seals.

The Seattle ArchDiocese has a scrip program where the schools get a cut
of the store gift cards sold. They recently decided that Wally World
and Sam's was bad for God and the world and will no longer do business
there. Wonder if enough church elders decided Wally was bad, if it
would impact the company. Seems the head of the Washington state
legislature wanted to stay in Wally's pocket and killed the bill to
make large employers foot the medical insurance bill more. Direct
response to the $12million spent in state funds to support Wally.
Really has the labor arm of the party uproared.

Every year, thousands of executives venture to Bentonville, Arkansas,

[MBZ] vegetable oil as a fuel

2006-02-16 Thread Jerry Herrman
I have a partially filled five gallon container of what appears to be vegetable
oil. I also have an 82 240D.

Questions:

1. Assuming it is a reasonably warm day, can I run this through the engine
straight? I am thinking of putting it into a gas can under the hood, and
having it sucked out of the can instead of from the line coming from the fuel
tank.

2. Will the car run if I do this?

3. At what temperature would it be too cold to do this?

4. Is it a problem if the oil looks ok, but is rancid?

5. If doing this straight is not a good idea, how much should it be diluted?

6. Is it ok to allow the line to return to the tank? Which fuel line takes it
back to the tank? Where do I disconnect that line to avoid having any of this
go to my tank?

7. What do I tell my wife?

1. There is a place on the back right side of the car, a little door
with a round thing behind it. Open the door, twist the round thing off,
and pour the oil into the hole there, unless #3 is operative. Then put
the round thing back on and close the door then drive the car.

2. When diesel was $3+ a few months back I got a 5g jug of vegoil at
Sams and poured it in the tank that was maybe half full. The car ran
fine, quieter, and the exhaust smelled better. It seems no worse for
the experience and I felt virtuous passing Priuses.

3. If the stuff won't pour out of the jug it is probably too cold. See #1

4. I knew a girl like that once, but won't get into details

5. Go to a sheep ranch near a mountain and ask one of the sheepboys
there for an alternative opinion

6. See #1

7. If you have to ask that question, see #5

Re: [MBZ] vegetable oil as a fuel

2006-02-16 Thread Levi Smith
My opinions below:

On 2/15/06, Jerry Herrman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I have a partially filled five gallon container of what appears to be
vegetable oil. I also have an 82 240D.

Umm... it appears to be veg oil? You might want to be sure. Though, if
it will burn, chances are your Benz will run on it. If it's not new stuff,
you might want to have a couple spare fuel filters with you if you're not
going to pre-filter it...

Questions:

 1. Assuming it is a reasonably warm day, can I run this through the
engine straight? I am thinking of putting it into a gas can under the
hood, and having it sucked out of the can instead of from the line coming
 from the fuel tank.

Probably... The oil really ought to be up to like 160-200 degrees. But The
Mercedes have reputations for running on anything. One guy in Florida drove
his for like 15K miles on straight veg with no heating before he killed it.

2. Will the car run if I do this?

Probably.

3. At what temperature would it be too cold to do this?

That depends on what you're asking. Technically speaking, when the oil is
too cold to flow (like when it's solid) it's not going to get pumped into
the engine. Realistically speaking, again it should be heated to around
coolant temp. But for the amount you have, you'll probably get away with it
as long as it's reasonably warm. (maybe 50 degrees if it's good oil).

4. Is it a problem if the oil looks ok, but is rancid?

It would certainly clog your fuel filter quicker. I think you'd smell it if
it was rancid though. It won't be a good smell.

5. If doing this straight is not a good idea, how much should it be diluted?

There's people running blends of anything and everything. I'd go with
50%. Though that's still not as safe as heating it. But it would be
safer than running it straight.

6. Is it ok to allow the line to return to the tank? Which fuel line takes
it back to the tank? Where do I disconnect that line to avoid having any of
 this go to my tank?

Well, you'll get some veg in your fuel tank. Probably not a problem for the
amount you're talking about. It can potentially sit at the bottom and be a
problem on a cold day, or start cleaning out all the gunk in the bottom of
your tank and clog your filters, but again probably not a problem for your
amount.
The return line is right next to the supply line where it gets near the IP.
There's two metal lines that run back towards the tank from the engine bay.

7. What do I tell my wife?

What would you like to tell her?

Is the oil used or unused? Are you sure it is veg oil?

If the answer is unused and yes AND you are not too anal about your car
(I did this kind of stuff with my rusty 240D, but would never do it to my
300SD or 300TD), then go right ahead. I am probably most remembered on this
list for putting filtered bacon fat into my 240DMarshall responded in
about the same way as he did to you.

I would not make it a habit of using RANCID oil. Anyway, just dump it
straight in the tank2 gallons in a full tank is pretty negligable - until it
gets cold...don't know where you live...

But as Marshall correctly points out, THIS IS NOT APPROVED BY MERCEDES-BENZ,
DAIMLER-CHRYSLER OR ANY OF IT'S AFFILIATES OR GURUS! So experiment at your own
risk.

FYI, alot of info online about this stuff. If you are really serious about
going veg, I would visit www.frybrid.com - my friend has that system on his 85
300Dt (with less than 80K) and it is SWEET!

Some of this info might be in the manual, but I keep forgetting to check and
haven't had a chance to read it yet (I AM a manual reader, just takes some
time to get to it).

There is a motor that, once the door is more or less closed, pulls the door
in and engages the lock - nice, but up there with 87 zone climate control,
IMO. It does the same when you unlock.

NOW, here's my question, the door doesn't stay open...it keeps falling
shutis it supposed to open and close ALL THE WAY AUTOMATICALLY? If yes,
how does that work?

If not, what holds it up? A spring? A strut type thing? magnets?

Is this a job from hell to fix?...what's up?

  Thanks for any help!

Re: [MBZ] 603 IP, smoking and starting

2006-02-16 Thread Loren Faeth
It is possible that the copper seals had leaked too. As to the o-ring
situation, This pump has leaked off and on for quite a while. (years) One
thing i do know from experience is that it IS possible to have air leak
through both rubber hoses and through rusty areas on steel lined under
clamps without any indication of fuel leakage. Just a little over a year
ago I had this situation on my SDL where the line over the rear axle had a
rusty area under a clamp. On the steel lines, If you let it go long enough
it will eventually start to get wet from fuel and then eventually start to
leak.

My first experience with this was on my 62 190Dc that was rusty when i got
it in 1971. Under the rear door, there was a rusty spot under a clamp that
was rusty, but not leaking. After I cut out this chunk, and replaced it, I
no longer got air into the fuel system.

I have also had rubber hoses in the engine compartment and from the tank to
the steel lines that look ok, and don't appear to be leaking, but have
quite a bit of age on them. When I have unexplained air leakage i replace
rubber hoses and then if it persists, I start looking for rust under clamps.

The only explanation I have for this is the difference in molecule size
between petro-based fuels and Oxygen molecules. I believe that as rubber
deteriorates, it develops voids large enough to allow oxygen to pass but
too small for fuel to pass. the same seems to be true with rusty steel,
with the rust scale in place. Once you knock off the rust scale, you get
fuel leakage. The clamps do a great job of holding rust scale in place.

The best explanation I have is an analogy to the common LDPE milk
bottle. The molecular structure of LDPE is pretty much like a window
screen. It is fine enough to hold in water and milk molecules, but
aldehydes go through. If you have heard purists claim that milk tastes
better in glass, it is because the flavor is able to migrate through the
LDPE, but not through glass.

I believe the IP o-rings can allow air past without fuel leakage, but when
the o-rings leak, I have little doubt that air enters the system when the
engine is off. When they leak fuel, they do at least allow any pressure in
the fuel system to bleed off.

Air in the fuel system is particularly a problem with older VWs, as LT Don
is experiencing with the Quantum. These engines have no transfer pump, but
rely on the draw of the Rotary Injection pump to pull fuel from the
tank. Any air leakage results in fuel draining back into the tank and the
lines filling with air. The workaround for VWs is to install an electric
fuel pump if you can't find the source of the air leak.

I have no idea if I have defined a test for delivery valve seal
leakage. All I can say is that if you have a diesel that is 15-20 years
old and the IP o-rings have not been replaced, I highly recommend changing
the o-rings, copper seals and springs. This same was true for 621 and
other older engines too. Cleanliness is an absolute must! you don't want
even a speck of lint from a cotton rag into the fuel system. I used to do
this regularly on OM 621 engines, but haven't had the time and all the
parts and tools and cooperative weather together at the same time to get
this done on my 603.

Mine would start firing, probably on the third compression stroke, but run
very rough. It acted like it was starved for fuel, but all the fuel
system
seemed to check out. When I pulled out the pin for the purple wire, it
made

more difference than anything else did, but it did not cure the
problem. In my case, pulling the purple wire did make a difference in
smoking and it also helped with the low power and rough running. Even in
20 below weather, my 603 has always started even without the heater
plugged in. In below zero weather it was hard to keep it running when
first started. It would start just fine, then loose power, and seemed to
run on 3, 4, or 5 cylinders, then gradually pick up the weak
cylinders. Remember this engine tested out to 425 PSI compression on all
cylinders. When i replaced the o-rings, two broke when taking them off
and

one was severely eroded for about 1/3 of the diameter. This is consistent
with missing on 1-3 cylinders depending on conditions.

Marshall, I am so impressed with the result of this operation, I am

[MBZ] Exploding GPs

FWIW, I put 4 gals of gas into my westy 1.6TD because some station in

My brother, a diesel fleet mechanic, once had a knucklehead service

Re: [MBZ] Exploding Glowplugs

2006-02-16 Thread Loren Faeth
The only way any gasoline was in my 200D was if the distributor or tank
truck mixed some in. I won't say that was impossible, but I noticed
nothing unusual about the way the engine was running when the plug
blew. If there was enough gasoline to cause a glow plug to blow, I'd guess
there'd be a noticeable difference in sound or performance.

The 200D was old enough that the owners manual stated that up to 25%
gasoline was ok in the winter. I will grant that was for loop type glow
plugs, and I had updated to pencil type. However Bosch I am sure was aware
of the gasoline approval.

I just chalked it up to some weirdness or perhaps a manufacturing defect.

17 years? Since 1989, our 1983 300TD has needed to have the struts replaced
TWICE and I need to do it again. They seem to last around 5-6 years at
best. It's not that difficult a job but you will need a torx socket wrench
to R/R the bolts that secure the struts to the roof and a long 2X4 to
support the hatch door while the struts are removed. A helpful friend would
also be a plus. Aggravation is likely but less so the second time around.

[MBZ] Late model 124 body cladding info

2006-02-16 Thread Zeitgeist
I recently purchased some of the late model 124 lower body panel
cladding, and foolishly thought these were like those found on my
Vanagon--just tacked on for show. Turns out they're integral to
sealing the lower parts of the doors. I then found much to my chagrin
that I needed to purchase the long plastic panel$ that bolt to the
body beneath the door$ and fender$. These panels appear to utilize
mounting points that don't exist on the earlier model 124 chassis.

Have any of you messed around with these pieces before, or
successfully adapted an early chassis to the late appearance package?
As usual, the service manual is bereft of useful details.

Re: [MBZ] The time has come (again)

2006-02-16 Thread R A Bennell
How about a few wraps of some sort of shrink wrap around the cracked boot to
keep the grease in until you get a chance to fix it? Sounds wierd but it
might work. Things like tape probably wouldn't work well as the sticky may
not handle the grease but shrink wrap might be ok and especially if applied
while you are where it is warm.

Flying out tomorrow (if temps are not too low to fly) to retrieve the 240D.

Will be flying into Phoenix, speding some time there, then head down to
Tucson where the auto awaits. Will be driving around, enjoying a little
vacation in my home town, and then will drive back to MN, with grease gun in
trunk for replenishing the axle with the cracked boot.

Send good List-vibes for our journey.

2006-02-16 Thread andrew strasfogel
Chris,

Once you remove the plastic roof moulding and rear speakers, IIRC, you'll
see that the headliner neatly hangs by a dowel or maybe one on each side.
Just slip it or them off their brackets and the rear 2' approx. of the
headliner drops down. You can then gain access to tackle the front end of
the struts' torx fittings. In a later 123 TD (84-85) they may have replaced
the torx fittings. WARNING: These fittings are SUPER TIGHT and I think I
even stripped one while getting it out, so have spares on hand!!

[MBZ] Bought a Different 300D

2006-02-16 Thread l02turner

http://www.autotrader.com/

While I thought I wanted the 300D I found in NJ, we went by and looked at a
91 300D with only 99k miles. Wanted my wife to see one in person. Since it
had a price of $1 I passed as this was more than I wanted to pay. It
drove and looked very nice and best of all was just down the street a few
miles. As it turned out this was a wholesaler who liked to sell cars and
this one had been there for 40 days. I can only think the unusually high
price of diesel kept it from selling - diesel is more than premium gas
around here. We got together at $8k and saved myself a trip to NJ with the
plane/train/drive back/day spent that went with it. Started it from cold
(although it;s in the 60s today) and the light went off after ~5 seconds and
the car fired up instantly. Idled smoothly and evenly, shifted as it should
and best of all (for the little woman) it was very quiet! Accelerated
nicely - especially once warmed up and downshifted as it should. Other than
a rear view mirror needing replacement I didn;t see anything needing
immediate attention.

Plus, this car has less than 100k while the other had 160K. So we went with
this one -- will pick it up Saturday. I did a search of 91-93 300D in a 50
mile range of 23831 zip - it;s at Hyman Auto and is pearl gray with a gray
interior. Comes with all books, has a new spare, the tool kits looks like
its all there also. Climate control worked as did the radio and everything
else as far as I went.

One thing I'm curious about. Air bags are critical to surviving an
accident - my wife lived because of the air bag she had when she was in a
wreck last Oct - but I'm not sure how you *know* they're still ready and
willing to fire should the need arise. Does the car do a self test of the
air bag to make sure it';s working?

At 99k miles the GPs might be getting long in the tooth. What;s the best
way to test them? Resistance? what value should they have? I'll switch to
Mobil 1 after putting 3000 on this oil. And will change the serpentine belt
if needed - although it looked like it was in very good condition. What
kind of fuese does it use? The old ceramic ones? I know, once it's in my
driveway I'll discover many of these things ---

Anything else I should plan on doing?

Later --

Sincerely,
Larry T ('74 911, '67 MGB, 91 300D 2.5)
