Actually, the listing will say: The attached photos don't really do this dress justice. It is absolutely gorgeous! I thought about modeling the dress for a photo but that just seemed wrong given that I have a bald spot on my head and a goatee on my chin – I think someone already pulled that stunt on eBay a while back. Besides, if I were to model for a photo then (1) I could no longer state that the dress has never been worn and (2) my wife would keep a copy of the photo and would certainly threaten to show it to my co-workers if I ever forget our wedding anniversary.
Re: [MBZ] OT Toyo Smoke
Rick and Curt et al. The oil was changed to 5w40 M1 in an attempt to improve things ( like stuck rings ) at the last change before the vsos change. The cylinder walls were very clean, no marks, no discoloration, no cross hatch etc. barely a ridge at the top of the cylinder wall. A thought has occurred, (stop the presses!) the engine, when cold, does not immediately start to smoke, it takes about 5-10 seconds. Waiting for the oil splash? My daughter ( 30 years old, blonde, model beautiful and still not married!) thinks that a Diesel benz is perfect for me, she, however, now drives an Honda RsxR 6 speed 160 mph rice rocket! Rick Knobe Uh, rings.. What did the cylinders look like with the head off? Maybe she needs an oil burner (diesel).. Re: [MBZ] 1982 300 CDT Runs on and on and on ...
If a door/trunk/fuel door lock is suspect, couldn't a person reach over and unlock the passenger door by itself, then unlock the trunk, then pull the fuel door lock, as a way to isolate the leaking acuator? This is, if all doors start locked in that process. Follow my logic, or is it flawed? It is flawed, in that when you override the locking system by pulling a knob the vacuum actuator doesn't move, you pop a toggle spring in the mechanism into its other state and override just the lock. The actuators themselves are actually very strong, and are hard to override. It's pretty easy to get at the 4-way tees under the floor mats, so just divide and conquer there. Chances are good it's the trunk actuator, though. Those are the only ones I've had fail so far. -- Jim

[MBZ] OM603 water injection project - update
The latest data from my water injection (ok, actually washer fluid, which is a methanol water mix) saga is posted here: http://buymbparts.com/forum/showthread.php?t=475 Short summary: Even with much larger amounts injected, there's a limit to reduction in IAT's, and nearly *zero* reduction of EGT's. Oddly, I'm now getting a measureable power gain with the injection, possibly from the methanol being burned as additional fuel. That's nice for a short term power boost, but still won't allow me to maintain long-term WOT like for climbing hills or top speed (where I have to back off the throttle to keep EGT's from melting pistons.) Re: [MBZ] OT Toyo Smoke
How many miles to the quart of oil? Maybe it's not engine oil! Does it have an automatic transmission? If so, it could be ATF that is being sucked into the intake via the accumulator. Other possibilities include slurping brake fluid through the brake booster. Antifreeze also results in tremendous white smoke, especially if it's lodged in the cat. There's a time delay until the cat heats up then hoo boy! A joke that experience mechanics like to play on the newbies. Dump a little antifreeze down an open exhaust pipe, so that the newly assembled engine then smokes like crazy after it runs a bit. -- Jim

[MBZ] OT Re Toyo underage smokin'
Hi, All Thanks for all the info.and suggestions. It is engine oil ( $5/qt Mobil 1 5W40 ). No other fluid disappears at the rate of a quart per 130 miles, with no apparent leaks. Yesterday here in good old Massachusetts, on Rt128, there were 6 or so morons playing grab-ass in the two left lanes in front of me, so I avoided them and went past at good speed to the accompaniment of a slight blue haze, considerably in excess of 55 mph. When the Valve guide seals were recently replaced the intake valve guides were well within spec. and the exhaust guide clearances were at the upper limit. TIA Fred Moir Lynn MA - Love cheap thrills? Re: [MBZ] This seller was dropped on his head as a baby, inhaled too many pot fumes as a child, and smokes too much crack as an adult
Well first of all this is a 114, there are plenty of 114 6 cylinder engines imported into the US. As for 108/109, there were also plenty of those brought in as well. The 4.5 didnt arrive until 71 in the 108/109. Before that they were all 6 cylinder. [MBZ] 82 300D-T running hot after acid flush (update)
First, thanks again to all the commented on this problem, lots of valuable insight. Bottom line, it is running fine now. I opened up the thermostat housing, the radiator plug, the plug to the engine block, hoses to and from the heator core and removed the resevoir cap and ran gallons and gallons of water through it. It produced a lot of rust and crud from the acid flush and I am guessing that this must have been slowing things down. Filled it up with Zerex G-05 and it is now running cooler than ever by about 10-15 degress. Re: [MBZ] 350 sdl glow plugs
A shop vac should pull out any little chunks from the breather hole, which doesn't open directly into the head anyway. I wouldn't worry too much about it. You'll likely need a new seal where the tube attaches to the valve cover, this seal is often fossilized after 5-10 years. My originals came out in chunks and felt like plastic... it should be nice, soft rubber. A new PCV tube is something like $30 I think. No worries about driving the car around the driveway with the PCV not connected, but I wouldn't drive it down the road like that... you'll be blowing quite a bit of oil vapor out the valve cover hole, and sucking unfiltered air into the rubber intake snorkel. =) -Dave M. -- Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2006 10:01:44 -0400 From: ANGELO GIAIMO [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] 350 sdl glow plugs Sunday, while tring to replace the boost pressure control hose on the turbo, I removed the several other pieces of hardware for better access. [MBZ] 190D status (glow plugs today)
Replaced the bad #2 glow plug. I'd bought the replacement a long time ago, the old plug measured some 30+ ohms, versus the 0.6 ohms it ought to. Fortunately for me #2 is the one you can reach without taking off the intake manifold, so it was fairly easy (a relative term!) to replace. I almost blew it because I couldn't find my deep 12mm socket and tried to make do with the regular one only half-engaged. After rounding off the shoulder of the plug I looked harder, and eventually found my set of deep metrics. That and a shot of PB and it came right out. With all five plugs measuring reasonably I turned on the key, to find no glow plug light and a harsh buzzing from under the hood. Tracking it down resulted in finding that the GP relay (005 545 18 32) was buzzing. I double-checked the wiring to it and its fuse, everything looked good. No buzzing if the GP's were unplugged, and directly jumping the ignition terminal at the relay resulted in the same symptoms. I grabbed a spare 5-cylinder GP relay (Bosch, 002 545 06 32) from the parts pile, no doubt from some 123, and plugged it in its place. It worked fine, though still didn't light the dash light (which does work, I've gotten it to come on sometimes). So I'm going to open up the relay and have a look. The 123 relay is non-optimal because the mounting ears are on the wrong side. Inside the relay nothing looked obviously bad. I'll probably try a resolder job on it, but first I have to strip the protective coating off of the board. The current 'measuring' is somewhat elegantly done by a reed switch. GP's #2-4 are fed through a single fat winding of strap copper around the reed switch. GP #1 is fed through a narrower counter-wound coil located inside the strap, it probably has three turns (it's hard to see). If the GP's all draw equal current, the two flux paths roughly cancel and the reed switch sees insignificant magnetic flux and doesn't close. #5 is an obvious bag on the side, and has its own reed switch with a 6-turn coil (in series with #5) around it. One presumes that its switch is logically combined with the other one to run the light. The stripping and resoldering went fine and the relay no longer buzzes. But the dash light still doesn't go on. Probing shows that both reed switches activate, and I think the main one is not supposed to if everything is OK. I opened the Bosch relay and found that it's built somewhat differently. There's only a single reed switch, with two countered assymetrical windings. #1, again, is pitted against the other four. (If you ask me, it's a better design.) The backwards housing can be corrected just by putting it back together the other way around, so if I ever need to I can substitute the 123 relay into the 201. On the bench, the repaired relay seems to work properly. With the reed switch from #5 jumpered 'on', the lamp output goes high for awhile when power is applied, then goes out. If the starter terminal is momentarily powered the relay shuts off when the starter terminal is released. The relay seems to be fine, so I reinstalled it in the car. ...Which only leaves the glow plugs themselves. Measuring resistance is only a poor substitute on high-current items like these. I grabbed a big Cherry microswitch and two alligator leads, and the clamp-on ammeter. I measured the current draw of each of the glow plugs in turn, and found that all but #1 started off at about 25A and dropped down to around 12A as it heated up. #1, however, started off at 40A and dropped down to 25A. As it's drawing nearly 2x the current it should, the magnetic circuit _is_ imbalanced and the light _should_ be off. I'll have to order another glow plug for #1. But the car should start anyway even if #1 is getting too hot! -- Jim

But then no matter what the odds, if you have enough tries the chances are good. If the chance is one in a million and there are 30 or so million occurrences each year it gets more likely. The rarity is greater that it happen to one individual who only buys a house / car every few years. BTW - FLAPS didn't have the NGK plug I needed for my 'new' generator, but suggested an E3 instead. At $5.97 each I'm not surprised ;-) Claims it is a VERY good plug. We shall see. Re: [MBZ] 190D status (glow plugs today)
A shorted (low resistance) plug is VERY unusual, but you've obviously found one. Usually a short will blow the fuse (or if it's internal to the glow plug, the plug shortly will fail). All the dash light NOT illuminating means is that the system needs to be serviced. Usually it's an open plug, but not always. A friend here tells me Mercedes sells a very similar vehicle (probably an A Class?). I love this car. Why can't we buy cars like this in the US? Ned Kleinhenz

Re: [MBZ] This seller was dropped on his head as a baby, inhaled too many pot fumes as a child, and smokes too much crack as an adult
Only problem it has two doors too many. The four door W114/115 are a bit on the boring side but the C114 actually is a very classy looking car and IMHO better than the C123. However when you sell something it is better to ask for too much then too little, you can always come down in price but it is hard to go up in price when the phone rings off the hook. Yeah I know this is ebay but I thought I'd write it anyway. Oooh yeah the fantastic D-jetronic system, not so bad if you can work on it yourself but take it to a mechanic and you can kiss your retirement fund goodbye. It should have the higher compression Eurpoean engine and the machanical fuel injection system. I dunno, it has four doors, a low-compression M110, and a Solex 4A1. I'm thinking $4k is pushing it in a best case scenario. I can almost envision a small-bumper 250C worth ten grand, but that is nearing into W111 coupe territory, and you can buy an excellent SLC for five grand. Poor Strichacht, no one appreciates them anymore. [MBZ] W140 steering pulsing when cold?
My 94 S350 has started showing some steering problems when cold. There is a pulsating moaning sound as you turn. You can feel the pulsating through the steering wheel. It changes pitch with the engine speed. It is maybe slightly harder to turn. After about 2 minutes, it goes back to normal. I could go out on a limb and suggest the steering pump is going bad, but I've been wrong before with apparently simple assumptions like that. If it is the pump, is it fixable? Easy fix? Thanks -Dave Walton 94S350, 99E300
Re: [MBZ] W140 steering pulsing when cold?
Can you check to see if there are any driveway spots of oil? Mine is leaking a tad and spots occur under the drivers side front just back from the bumper. Looking at the 2nd rebuild now. Re: [MBZ] W140 steering pulsing when cold?
Dave you're one of the brighter guys on the list. You've probably already checked fluid level.Have you checked if the serpentine belt is loose or the belt is slipping. Is the belt tensioner set to the right tension? There was a procecure to do it on the Dvd. If you need it let me know. Got ya beat on a starter issue on our V12. One part number for it per the EPC. MB Dealer sends it to me. Have Bedford MB put it in because of some broken ribs. MB dealer starter is a direct opposite of the one they take out of the car. So they put the old one back in. Send the new one back to the dealer with a spare core from a 1995 I had. The 1995 starter matched up to the one they sent me. MB Dealer gets in two more starters and they're all the same - all 4 match. The one in our car is the oddball. Will try and jack it up tommorrow and pull it out to get the Bosch number off it. Possibly the previous owner may have had it in upside down, or just a wrong part that was butchered to get it fit. Will try to determine it tommorrow.
