i'd argue that *if* (big IF) the timers for the yellows are reasonably
coordinated with the speeds expected at the intersection and you can't
stop your vehicle (whatever type it might be) before you wind up
entering an intersection on a red, you're moving too fast, and/or your
vehicles braking system is inadequate.

here i see a lot of lights that have countdowns for the pedestrian

typically, a yellow is -supposed- to last one second for every 10MPH of the
speed limit. So a 35MPH zone -should- have a 3.5second yellow light, +/-.

It would be silly to have a 8 sec yellow in a 20 mph (30 km/h) zone -

Re: [MBZ] Archives and question on glow plugs

2006-10-02 Thread Peter Frederick
Series glow plugs are resistors, and there are six resistance loops per
engine (two resistance elements on the fours, one on the fives, and I
presume none on the six cylinder truck engines).

There is a 1.3 V or so voltage drop across each resistance element,
total current is about 30 - 40 A at 12V DC.

The voltage doesn't "go" anywhere.

Parallel pluts are also resistors, but they have a resistance built
into the relay and are all wired direct. Same principle (resistance
heating), just a different application. I believe the parallel plugs
get hotter, and they heat up much faster, as anyone with a manual
series GP car will attest.

Then try it with a 80,000 lb (36,000 kg) truck and trailer
combination!

I have run many red lights 'cause the traffic engineer didn't figure
on the stopping distance of a big truck. I knew how long it would take
to stop my truck, so I "made my own yellow" light. Once I crossed that
point, there was no value in trying to stop.

We have the cameras here to, but I think the story is that they do not count as
running a red unless the light is
already red when one enters the intersection. If is is yellow when your car
enters, you are not ticketed, unless
you are speeding as they catch that part too. We also have mobile units that
catch speeders but they are supposed
to be limited to school zones and things like that. My younger son got a hefty
ticket from one of those parked over
by the local junior high - during the evening on a weekend so not much danger
to the kids who attend the school.

[MBZ] Camera proofing your car's license plate

2006-10-02 Thread Michael
Ok, so there are companies selling license plate covers to prevent cameras from
reading your license plate.

I bought a few while I lived in Savannah, GA. The city there installed a
traffic camera at one intersection. My wife pulled a U turn right in front of
one while the light was red. We received a ticket in the mail from the PARKING
SERVICES of Savannah showning HER CAR and HER PLATE NUMBER. I never paid it...

BTW- before I moved away from Savannah I went through the same red light twice,
making the same U turn.
The traffic camera flashing away. Eating up film I hope.

Cheers!

Michael

Re: [MBZ] OT: Traffic Cams

2006-10-02 Thread dave walton

Cleveland installed them a few months ago. I received one in the mail
for $120 for going 4 miles over the speed limit. It said that if I pay
now, no points will be accessed to my license. Funny thing was that
the car in the photo was a white Chevy Blazer. I don't own or drive
one. Seems that the cop processing the photos read the plate number in
the photo wrong and confused that car for a silver Mercedes. It was
also odd that it took them over a month to process the ticket.
It appears to be purely a revenue generator - and they have targeted
the poorest neighborhoods in the city. I suppose the poor are least
likely to take action. For someone working minimum wage, giving up a
weeks take home pay does not strike me as a good way to stimulate the
economy. Especially when you may accumulate 3 or 4 infractions before
you know you did anything wrong. How do you get to work after they
suspend your license for not paying the tickets? I guess you go on
welfare. Or start selling Crack. Or both.

Here in DC you can count one-one thousand, two-one thousand... all the way
to five one-thousand during the yellow phase. We don't want to stigmative
drivers for running a red light, so we accommodate them by
s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g the yellow cycle. As they say in the Guinness

yellows are generally long enough that you should have time to clear an
unobstructed intersection if you're moving at the proper speed when they
turn without having to "screech" to a stop. if you're moving slower, it
shouldn't be a problem, and if you're moving *faster*, it's even easier.

[MBZ] Confusion over main fel filters in 83 and 85 300 turbodiesels

2006-10-02 Thread andrew strasfogel

I had to replace a leaky main fuel filter in her 1985 300CD and discovered I
had two spin on filters on the shelf in my garage (one was Mann, one
Knecht). The larger of the two FFs matched the one on the 1985 300CD, and
the smaller one matched that on my 1983 300TD. Yet when I checked one of
the parts websites it showed identical FFs for both year's models. What
gives?

[MBZ] Other things to replace?

2006-10-02 Thread Curt Raymond
'85 190D 2.2l
So my injector lines are due to be here tomorrow so I finally go around to
thinking about what else I should replace.
Obviously all the clippies need to be replaced. Based on Rusty's site it looks
like theres 5 of them.
Is there anything else I should be doing while I'm there? I think I need to
take the airbox off to do the injector lines, is there a vacuum shutoff down
there like on my 240D that I should do while I'm there? Gasket on the airbox?
Glowplugs? Anything? Buehler?

Thanks

-Curt

If the tranny will not move it is most likely the front pump seal went

There are also the rarer problems like sheared front pump drive

Thanks Dan , will give that a go. I was also told by a very experienced
Merc mechanic that the proshaft flange nut at the end of the
transmission can come loose which results in a low governer pressure
resulting in incorrect shifting.

I tried to remove the rubber coupling and slowly realised that's it's a
major job as one will have to remove the entire propshaft to end to that
flange nut - so have given up on that idea!

My SD had the same symptoms. Trans flush did NOT cure the problem,

Re: [MBZ] Accelerator Control W124 '91 300D

2006-10-02 Thread Jim Cathey
After struggling with the idle speed dropping during braking, I
realized I
had disconnected my EGR a while back to see if I could get the
improved MPGs
and faster times. Today I decided to check and see what the result
would be

if I re-attached it.

Nobody who knows has ever suggested that the EGR be disconnected on
anything
newer than about '87. The engine computer detects such nefarious
activity

and punishes you. Really.

2006-10-02 Thread Jim Cathey
When I start the car the idiot lights no longer come on. The only
lights
that come on now are the glow plug light and the SRS light. Any ideas
where

I should start looking?

At the alternator and its light bulb. That's where the current to
do the lamp test comes from. If the alternator's not drawing field
current through the dash light it won't charge, nor will all those
other lights go on.

Re: [MBZ] Archives and question on glow plugs

2006-10-02 Thread Jim Cathey

1st - the series Vs parallel question - OK - series is when the GPs are
hooked one after the other, i.e. #1 gets 12V, #2 is supplied by #1
(and has
a voltage loss), #3 is supplied by #2 - again with a voltage drop, and
so

on.

A bit simplistic. Each gets approximately 1V, the balance (of 12V) is
wasted in the toaster racks. IMHO, if the toaster racks were internal
to the intake manifold the series system would be just as effective as
the parallel system, and longer-lived. But not quite as quick to heat
up since the parallel plugs have a quick-heat feature that draws more
current until they reach a base temperature. Or so I've read. And
not quite as quick to diagnose. (It's actually easy, measure the
voltage _across_ each one when working, any that's got more than 1V
across it has a problem. Any that have less are probably being
shortchanged by one that has too much, so keep looking.)

I've had the console out several times and the dash out once on our '82

Replace the shutoff. Flush the lines with brake parts cleaner, else the

[MBZ] Got Kaleb's price beat......

2006-10-02 Thread Mike Canfield
Going Saturday to pick up a free 300SD in PA..Says the tranny just quit
working, no slipping, no noise, nothing, just quit. Any pointers on what to
look for?

Said it was a 6 cyl? Thought it should be a 5 if it is an SD? SDL is 6
right? Did they make an SDL in 83. He said it is a 126 body.

Didn't ask alot of questions that didn't have to do with it rolling on the
trailer for the price. I'll soon see if it's worth the trip.

SD is 5, SDL is 6. SDL started in '86. 300SE started in "89

Re: [MBZ] The Supersucker

2006-10-02 Thread archer
It depends on what you have lying around your shop/garage. Roll of screen
wire wouldn't be unusual for a do-it-yourselfer. The roofing valley might
be less common although some of us have that also. Saplings are usually
free. Of course, if you didn't have a plastic bucket on hand, you would
have to buy one from Home Depot; price: $5.00. I think the metal cans were
about $10.00, so that would be considerably more.

Gerry

- Original Message -
From: "Rich Thomas" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

This sounds like it would cost way more than $2. Maybe $3 or4.

archer wrote:

During the hurricane season last year Home Depot sold old fashioned five
gallon steel buckets with a fixed screw capped spout and a center cap.
They

may still sell them. I doubt they would collapse using a vacuum cleaner.
The one I bought had a leak which I had to solder, but all may not leak.

If you live near woods you might find a green sapling branch or trunk you
can bend enough to stick down in the bucket. Once inside you can put
wire
ties around it so it will retain its circumference. Or a cheap ten foot
or
longer plumbers "snake" like Home Depot sells could be wound inside it
and
secured with wire ties. Either the snake or the sapling, positioned in
the

middle of the plastic bucket, might keep it from collapsing.

Another solution might be to buy a roll of roofing "valley" and let it
unroll inside the plastic bucket. It might be a good idea to drape
several

wire ties around the edge of the bucket before turning the roll of valley
loose. Then you can tie them tight to keep the slick, oily valley from
trying to roll back up.

A couple of layers of screen wire tied over the inlet hose should reduce
splashing. Stick a small piece of metal tubing the same o.d. as the
hoses
i.d. in the end of the inlet hose, loosely wrap the screen wire over the
end
of the hose, and clamp it on tight over the metal tubing with a hose
clamp.

Good luck,

OK, so I look at the bottom of your message and see:

As it turns out, http://www.striplin.net and http://www.okiebenz.com both
look the same (are they the same page, or is http://www.striplin.net
obsolete?).

So on both of those pages, I see links for:

   - Mailing Lists
   - Parts
   - Auctions
   - Articles
   - People
   - Cars
   - Links
   - OkieQ
   - RustyQ
   - Quotes

but nothing for archives.

I think that's the law here, too, but so far they say they're including
a bit of leniency in the cameras -- they only nab you if you enter the
intersection on a red. A lot of the violations are people who don't
stop before making a right-on-red.

If that leniency weren't there, you'd pretty much have to come to a
screeching stop at every yellow to be safe.

I saw one really cool system demo'd on TV that could actually predict,
based on a car's speed and and (lack of) deceleration, whether it was
going to run the light. If it detected a car was going to, it recorded
a video clip of the entire event *and* held the red for the other
direction a little longer, preventing another car from moving into the
violator's path. I don't know if anybody's actually deployed that one, yet.
