Re: [MBZ] I'm back.......
A friend came by the office today. He is supervisor for the gov't-funded place that runs our buses. He is a long hair (below shoulder length but uses a rubber band), bearded Harley rider and is even more meek and mild than I am. His wife has an M.S. in nutrition stuff and runs the dietary department at the local hospital. Steve is about 5 years younger than I am -- I am early 50s and he is late 40s. Anyway, Steve came into my office and plopped down on my love seat. He looked totally stressed and pretty hungry. I could tell he wanted to talk -- that is my job, letting folks talk. Seems he'd had chest pains and had finally gone to see a doctor. Stress test, etc., came back fine but the doctor (bless his heart) said his cholesterol was a bit on the high side. Doctor told wife, probably over a lunch of carrots. Oops. Steve is now cut off from the routine of having two beers after work and is on a special diet that only an evil college-educated, state licensed, eat this because it is good for you lady can put together. Steve is hating life at the moment. This is a guy who rides a Harley every summer from Iowa to the east coast, this year's trip a swing up thru Canada, down thru Maine and back along the northern border. Best description I can give you is Tommy Chong. Were I not a vegetarian, I'd invite him over for some before-you-go-home-after-work discrete Italian sausages on the grill. Wonder if I can make tofu sexy for him? D. On 10/5/06, Peter T. Arnold [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Return of prodigal son, glad to be back. Damn heart take a beating, keeps on ticking. Kindalike a Benz. I am enjoying life at the bottom of the food chain. I really don't miss meat -- but do still crave (and routinely consume) seafood and cheese. I was a 36 waist pushing 38, and now I am a baggy 36 waist drifting back to the 34s that I had packed away. I feel better and even considered taking up running again. Fortunately, I sat down with a glass of wine and the newspaper until that jogging sh** moment passed. I have thought about paying for a membership in the local gym -- would be nice to once again bench press my body weight before I slip off to the nursing home. In fact, I shaved off the goatee. [MBZ] Wheel wanted
This is most likely an exercise in futility, but as I'm leaving no stone unturned I need one restorable Porsche Fuchs wheel. This is a forged alloy wheel. Size: 8X16 ET 10.6. Porsche part #911.361.020.45 Application: 88-89 911 Carrera rear. Please notice that this is the 10.6mm offset, not the more common 23.3mm. The cosmetic condition of the paint and anodizing is unimportant since the wheel will be restored. The wheel must be straight and the rim ungouged. I will pay a $50.00 finders fee. I guess so. I was a veggie for about five years during the late 70s and fell prey to a ham sandwich during a ten our search that was supposed to be a two hour trainer. I always took my own lunch on a flight. We were diverted during a short training flight to search for an overdue sailboat and landed at CGAS Cape Cod just long enough for the cooks to throw in a cooler of ham sandwiches and a thermos (big ass thermos) of coffee. What can I say, I got hungry while navigating. Skip breakfast, take off at 8:00 am, and by supper all moral objections go south. Ok, all joking aside, I feel better with the veg diet. I'd not force it upon anyone -- including the wife: now that we are an empty nest I cook carnivore for her and cook veggie for me. But for me it just works. Pretty much the same cooking, except I fry one pork chop instead of two, and do a grilled cheese sandwich on one of the other burners for me. But she is weakening. She is starting to enjoy the veg dishes I prepare. On 10/5/06, OK Don [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: You have a moral objection to burying the flesh of dead animals in your stomach? Re: [MBZ] I'm back.......
Vitamins are not in meat, protein is. I eat enough beans to have Gary escorted quietly from the mall -- with the HazMat team standing by. And when I get tired of beans I turn to the cheese family There is a science to getting the proteins and I had it all memorized a couple of decades ago. One of my favorite quotes is by Henry David Thoreau, who says his neighbors told him he couldn't live without eating meat -- while they walked behind their oxen plowing the fields (ox live on grass and don't eat meat-- think horse, Kleb). I promise you, if I show up for the next OkieQ (I've not missed any except #1), I will be alive and probably a bit slimmer. Lots of confusing terms get thrown around. I consider myself to be a vegetarian, not a vegan. Some (the vegans) only eat plants. I can't do that. In addition to the plants I eat eggs, cheese (LOVE cheese -- great source of protein), drink lots of milk, and eat any and all seafood. And then there are the eggs. So ... I will turn down a steak. But bring me a bucket of craw fish or, even better, shrimp, and I will be face down, left hand searching for my drink of choice. D. On 10/5/06, Kaleb C. [MBZ] rebuilding the Vicker power steering pump
Loren, I partly rebuilt mine, which is a two stage unit (steering and hydraulic blocking of the differential) for the 350 SDL. You can replace all of the seals yourself, but be very careful when removing the body. The vanes are loose and must be kept in place. It is a very tricky operation. The shaft requires a special puller. The cost to either buy one or make one exceeds the cost of having it rebuilt. I sent mine to Star Motors ( Niel), tel. 607 786 3918 and had them rebuild it. They have the parts or you can supply them with the kit from MB. My total cost, with a new bearing (an internal bore) was about $140. They also have exchange units. I chose to keep mine because I had just had some parts on it remachined. Constantine

Nope. And by all means don't feed him tofu without his knowledge - he doesn't need that stress. Funny - we wanted our wedding reception to be meat-free. The man paying for it wouldn't have it - would've been and embarassment for him - people don't feel they're getting a full meal without the meat course. We weren't asking them to eat something they don't eat, we were just asking them - for just one meal - a special meal to us - not to eat something that they do eat. [MBZ] Trunk rust from rain
I just finished sanding and painting the passenger well of the trunk in the 240D. Wasn't too bad thankfully - especially considering how long water may have been allowed to collect there. Question is: what purpose does that rubber plug really serve since the small hole in the big plastic insert won't really let anything through? Perhaps it's to disallow too much road grime or dirt or rocks to come up into the body? I'm tempted to leave it out to avoid clogging again. Also, is water supposed to drain into there in the first place? Say, from the normal route of the gutters that route rain water? If not, why did water collect there after a rain? Oh, and I was impressed with what I saw in terms of how deeply into the seams where two pieces of metal met that there was rubber-like goo from the factory in there. Seems to me that'd resist corrosion pretty well. Brian 83 240D

My oldest daughter, on a New Years Eve whim, said she'd eat no animal flesh for a whole year while she toured. She ended up doing it for two years. She said doing it in the UK was difficult, and doing it in the midwest was almost impossible but she managed. While she was being a veg girl, she seldom was sick. In the last year she's crept back into meat and she seems to be sick more frequently (she calls up wanting the med hook-up from mom). Don't know if that is just a co-inky-dink or not. Re: [MBZ] Trunk rust from rain
If you've got water in your trunk, most likely it's from a leaking trunk seal. I've seen water in my trunk on my 83' 300D though I haven't gone looking for the culprit. Though come to think of it, both of my Subaru's have had water in the trunks and those were from leaking seals around the taillights. Perhaps that's the problem here as well. Again, I haven't gone looking yet as my trunk with the greasecar tank isn't exactly a place I would keep anything important unless it's in a storage tote or something else that would protect it... Re: [MBZ] drugs?
Hi Archer, The MB 600 used a V8 engine like the one used in the 300SEL 6.3. It's a very powerful engine as it needed to be to pull all the weight of the 600 around! That 600 is an amazing car. Still desireable ater 40 years everything on it was upsized from the early W108 - even the Star was made larger. The window lifts were not electric like we have on our current MBs but are hydraulic - I understand they are hydraulic as the system is virtually silent. Neat cars - but expensive to maintain. The trunk seals also function as storm drains - water is supposed to get to them, then flow around and down. If the channel facing the outside of the seal is clogged with dirt and leaves, you'll get water in the trunk. I assume you've tried eBay? [MBZ] 300CD oil usage
Since everyone has a high amount of time invested in this, I thought I'd give you the latest update. I let the engine sit with Marvel Mystery Oil sitting in each cylinder for nearly 2 weeks before finally starting it up. Once the initial smoking was done, it settled into it's normal amount of visible smoke at idle. Rats, no change. So I drove it to the fuel station, filled up with a tank of B10 and drove it for a few days. After a day or so of driving like I stole it, I ran some full throttle starts onto the interstate with people behind me at night. I could notice a definate reduction in the amount of smoke/particulate in the headlights behind me. It was more like cruising throttle at 70-75mph was before and the smoke/particulate while cruising at 70-75 was not visible. This is a definate change. So, I took the car to KS/NE and back last weekend, over 1000 miles of mostly 65-80. When I parked it for the first time in KS after about 450 miles, it left a 6-8 spot of oil on the ground. This is odd...this car never left more than 2 or 3 nickle or quarter sized drops under it in multiple days here at work...the puddle only took 2-3 hours... So, when I arrived back home, I put some cardboard under the car and it puddled up again, right under the front edge of the oil pan. I looked a little closer, and it appears to be draining down from the crank shaft and front main seal. Finally, something visible that I can repair. -- Luther KB5QHU Alma, Ark '83 300SD (236 kmi) '82 300CD (160 kmi) '82 300D (74 kmi) needs MAJOR work

This issue raises a question in my own case. My 115 76 300D has a reasonably good looking trunk seal but is is loose. It just sits there and is not glued down at all. Should it be? Don't know, Randy. I've yet to look into this trunk seal thing. I just was obsessed with irradicating the rust that the problem caused. Wanted the auto to be totally rust-free. I'm assuming that by trunk seal you guys simply mean the rubber ring around the trunk opening. Have any of you guys that occasionally get water in the trunk looked into how much rust you may have as a restult? Just curious if you guys thought it'd be enough a problem to look into, or if it'd take longer for it to make any appreciable difference than the vehicle will last? Its likely your rear windshield gasket is leaking, if this be so you may see water dripping down on the wheel well part (rounded) of your plastic trunk well liners, Thats not a cheap fix and, around here anyway, they wont be responsible if the glass breaks.
