yeah - you could actually turn the key and start the car. that's pretty
souped up compared to the 115s.

Buy the 220 - but be warned, it'll be really slow with that auto box.

A Crown Vic Police Interceptor is not really a performance car. It's
got basically the same engine as a V-8 Mustang and considerably more
weight. 0-60 times are in the 8 second range. True, the speed limiter
is raised to around 130 mph, but there are much faster cars out there.
The differences between the civilian Crown Vic and the PI mostly improve
handling and allow it to sustain top speed without overheating and idle
for long periods without draining the battery.

A visual cue to the police package is the dual exhaust. So there are some

Yeah, that's good for a small horsepower gain. It's also found on Crown
Victorias with the trailer towing package. It's one of the few
examples of a modern car with a true dual exhaust, not a Y-pipe. The
police package also usually has a lower rear end ratio, but it depends
on how it was ordered. The basic engine and transmission are the same
as the civilian version, but the ECU programming is slightly different,
they have a higher-output alternator, and some additional cooling is
added. (Oil cooler, power steering fluid cooler.)

Re: [MBZ] I hate to start another oil thread . . .

2006-12-17 Thread Curt Raymond

Hi Glenn,

Please don't take this as any kind of a personal thing, its just your
financial advantage isn't...

So you've given actual prices which makes it better than what I gave before.
Let me again use myself as an example.
I drive 108 miles 5 days a week. With conventional oil thats got me changing
the oil every other month...

So Mobil 1 usually comes in 5 quart jugs, not gallons but your price looks
right for a gallon, we'll need 5 quarts though so $25 and $11.25 for Delvac
1300S.
At 9,000 miles the Mobil 1 still cost $25 but the Delvac now cost $33.75. Throw
in the extra two filters you needed to buy for the changes with Delvac and the
Mobil 1 cost -$22.75.

Lets assume I'm really good at my oil changes and manage in an hour flat, I
bill for around $25/hr, at 9,000 miles the Mobil 1 has saved me now a total of
$72.75.

Now in this example lets assume we've used a whole 3 pack of oil analysis kits
to prove we can go 9,000 miles, Mobil 1 is now only ahead $17.75

Thats real money back in your pocket, but in truth I'm not so worried about the
money, its the satisfaction in not spending that extra hour every other month.
Sure I like working on the car, but not extra work I don't need to do.

I was only trying to point out what I feel
is a financial advantage of using Delvac 1300S
vs. Mobil M1 synthetic oil in one's MB diesel. Depending on an
independent study being done
to verify an appropriate oil change interval for each of these oils and
the fact that MB diesel automobiles
have had a lengthy reputation for longevity and long before the advent
of synthetic motor oils.
The cold start benefit would also need to be independently quantified
(15W vs. 0W, rather questionable
in my view), as well as timing chain stretch.

The prices for these oils at the local Advance Auto Parts: Mobil M1
$19.88/gal.
Delvac 1300S $ 8.98/gal.I was only trying to provide a very good
alternative for those who may be frugally minded, as the
last I knew there isn't any guarantee which comes wih the purchase of

One last thing, get yourself a quart of Mobil 1 15w50 (I won't even sandbag
with 0w40), chill it down to -20F, compare it to some conventional 15w40 at the
same temp. The conventional oil is now grease, the Mobil 1 is still oil. Theres
your independant verification, cold starts with Mobil 1 ARE easier because the
oil flows easier.

Been there, done that, got a merit badge in making a stubborn 240D start in the
cold.

Well, so it does:

85 - 140V (Selector Switch set to 120V)
90 - 150V (Selector Switch set to 127V)

whichever US car was cheapest to get at the time (mainly Luminas and Malibus
 and Transport/Montana minivans).

Here they all use surplus cop cars.

Wait until gas prices spike again and tell me if that changes.

They use mostly Vics in Ottawa, but around here it's semi-rural and the
drivers won't stand for the fuel costs in the Fords.

Huh. They've contracted out a lot of winter roads stuff here, so actually
getting salt on your car some days is a bit of a novelty.

My favourite was the winter of 2003, when we had an unpredicted flash ice
storm on a Saturday AM that caught the contractor by surprise. I wrote off
my Volvo 740 Turbo that morning, ended up on the lawn of the police station
actually.

Anyway, they only hire the best clowns to drive the salt/plow trucks. The
first guy who takes a run up the two-lane highway running out of town loses
it and ends up in a field. The next clown thinks he can pull his cuz out and
ends up pointing at the sky in the ditch, effectively closing the highway
for about three hours while they fish them out.

The irony being, that traffic was moving ok until the salt trucks arrived.

Re: [MBZ] Golden Age? Finding 80s Autos (now heading into a rant)

2006-12-17 Thread Zoltan Finks

Oh yes, I know. My cronies and I, growing up, used to laugh at the
performance of the cop cars and a few of us were fortunate enough to be able
to honestly brag about outrunning them. (outrunning was the easy part,
outcornering a bit more difficult, and of course, outrunning the Motorola or
the whirlybird, near impossible).

I know cop cars aren't performance cars. I was just making a comment on
taxi drivers and how any extra shred of horsepower entrusted them is a scary
thing.

When my wife and I took a cab from the Seattle airport recently, I noticed
that the driver was falling asleep behind the wheel as a cozy sunbeam shone
in the window around dusk as he took us down the freeway. With the severe
communication barrier, one wonders how they pass the driving test to get
even their basic personal drivers licence.

Re: [MBZ] Golden Age? Finding 80s Autos (now heading into a rant)

2006-12-17 Thread Zoltan Finks

That's true. Another visual cue is the rear sway bar. Or maybe all
full-sized American cars come with rear sway bars now. It used to be a real
rarity.

The size and profile of the tires is another indicator. And aluminum wheels
are not often found on a cop car, nor are wheel-covers (as opposed to hub
caps).

I notice now that the wheels on cop cars are a unique design that has an
offset that has the wheel center farther toward the outboard. And they don't
have any hubcaps, just a center cap if I recall correctly.

Often when trying to determine whether the Crown Vic in the distance is a
cop, I look for any clue possible, such as the visual profile of the driver,
and whether there are any objects resting on the rear deck or dashboard (as
in regular people junk). The cues are many.

Also, it seems you'll never see a Mercury cop car.

Ditto! After trying Chrysler, GM and Ford, the MB is by far the easiest to
use - and the one on my 15 yr old MB works perfectly like it were brand
new - it engages instantly holds the speed exactly with no drifting.

as far as needing to reach around the steering wheel to operate the arm -
for me I can reach it with my fingertips just like the turnsignals.

The buttons on the steering wheel pad gave me the most trouble finding them
in the dark - and the most odd part to other CC systems are needing to turn
them *on* - geez - if I'm driving, the CC should be turned on only needing
to be set to start working. I have no idea why so many system have a
ON/OFF switch.

It took a few minutes to memorize the 4 commands to use with the CC stalk -
but pushing it up momentarily is really the only important command.

Of course, the Consumer Reports testers always have trouble, confusing the

[MBZ] New wagon

2006-12-17 Thread Ralph W
So I picked up Zedic's '87 300TD yesterday in Toronto and drove it back to
Detroit. Trip went well. I think I'm going to like this vehicle. The 3.0L is
quite different than the 2.5L in my '90 124. No noticeable turbo like the 2.5.
Jeff left me with a number of unfinished suspension jobs but provided most of
the new parts. Should ride like new when I'm done. Good job for the x-mas break.

Time to off load the two parts wagons!

The cirping crickets in the '90 124 have gotton almost unbearable at low blower
motor speed. Not noticeable at high speed. So it's either high speed or off

How does one access this unit. I've heard it is through the cowl screen on the

bearing be fixed or lubed or is a new assy required. Any help would be

I had mine replaced last summer - I just wasn't up to doing it myself -
anyway, the windshield wiper assy must be removed and the windshield trim
underneath it next. The fan assy is below the W wiper. I'm told it can be
difficult removing the fans from the motor. The new motor can be bought
with or without fans so the old ones can be re-used if desired.

A new motor with fans is a little over $210 while without fans the motor is
around $135. from Rusty.

Look for #1 or #2 phillips head screws in the bottom of the case.
Some of the APCs even have battery doors.

On the smaller APCs the battery door is usually on the bottom. On the
bigger units it's sometimes behind the front bezel, especially on
rack-mount ones. Getting the old battery out can be a chore because
they tend to swell up when they fail.

Small ones generally have a single 12-volt gel cell battery or two
6-volt ones in series. Bigger ones sometimes run higher voltages. A 3

How was your experience at US Customs. Hope they treated you well.

Should ride like new when I'm done. Good job for the x-mas break.

That's true. Another visual cue is the rear sway bar. Or maybe all

All Crown Vics after a certain year have a Watt's link to locate the
rear axle.(Older ones have a Panhard rod.) Dunno if the sway bar is
always there, though. The cop cars have a stiffer spring rate and
handle pretty well for a big car, although you're always aware of the
amount of mass you're pushing around.

I notice now that the wheels on cop cars are a unique design that has an
offset that has the wheel center farther toward the outboard. And they don't
have any hubcaps, just a center cap if I recall correctly.

Yeah, the big, black 16 wheels appeared some time after 2000, I think.
After the style change to the big Grand Marquis grille the cop cars
usually got a blacked-out grille instead of chrome, as well. Of course,
the tricky bit is that all of this stuff is optional; it all depends on
what boxes were checked on the order form. The only way to be
absolutely sure whether a car was ordered as a police package model is
to look at the VIN.

Often when trying to determine whether the Crown Vic in the distance is a
cop, I look for any clue possible, such as the visual profile of the driver,
and whether there are any objects resting on the rear deck or dashboard (as
in regular people junk). The cues are many.

A partition between the front and rear seats is a dead giveaway. So is
an exempt or state-government license plate.

Also, it seems you'll never see a Mercury cop car.

Unless it's unmarked! Then all bets are off. Heck, I've seen people
pulled over by cops in pickup trucks.

That should have been an interrogative, as in How was your experience at US

bad me!

I have no idea why so many system have a

I can think of two possibilities:

- As a safety to prevent accidental engagement, and resulting lawsuits.

fails.

Don't count on picking out cops by car in Alabama.

Around here, you are just as likely to be pulled over by a SUV. The police
in Tuscaloosa are running around in Mercedes M class some of the State
Troopers are running around in Ford Exploders.

Then they have a range of other undercover cars.

Thanks,
