no, dude, i'm in florida. it's a pretty delicate negotiation, actually, as
she doesn't want the dog but wants to retain rights to the dog. she sold
the dog as a puppy to an insane woman who apparently kept it in a tiny crate
and starved it. she then "liberated" the dog, but he is an intact male so
he and his dad just want to fight all the time.

her thought is to give me the dog, but retain rights to breed him and show
him. i'm ok with that, but she doesn't have clear title to the dog as far as
i can tell, the ownership papers listing her, her daughter and the crazed
woman as the owners. i'd rather not end up having to explain to my near 10
year old how the police came and took our dog because he wasn't even
remotely close to being our dog according to the law.

the dog is sweet as can be, but he's still close enough to being a wild
animal to have cause for worry. i'm not so much worried about him around me
and abby as they are fiercely devoted to their "packmates", but i will have
to get him to understand that when the neighbors pair of irish setters come
over to visit us, that he needs to view them as beloved family friends and
not as potential dangerous interlopers who need to be attacked and driven
off. i'm not sure how well a semi feral pariah dog can grasp these
concepts. i mean, even human beings can't really get away from "hey, they
are different than us. let's kill them!" so what can we expect from an
almost wild dog?

i think i'm going to borrow him for a couple of weeks soon to see how it
goes.

as for bribes, it really is amazing how well they work. white protestant
man seems to have an undue disdain for this sort of thing as most anything
is possible when you shake a fella's hand with a 20 dollar bill in it,
especially among dudes making 8 bucks an hour and having 3 of that taken
from them by the government for no reason anyone can discern beyond them
being big, bad and heavily armed. (don't you think they'd prefer buying
food for their families with that money rather than funding another big war
and calling it "social security"?

Apple Computer has shown people will gladly part with money at its candy

But here's a little-known fact: Apple's chic stores don't just sell more
per
square foot than even Best Buy, they beat some of the best in the luxury
retail world silly, according to a report released Tuesday by Bernstein
Research
analyst Toni Sacconaghi.

Apple's stores have hauled in annual sales per square foot of $4,032,
compared with Best Buy's $930, Neiman Marcus' $611, and luxury store
Tiffany & Co.'s
$2,666, according to Bernstein.

It's a wild contrast to the failure of Apple rivals such as Gateway to
break
into the retail market.

Apple's recipeworks like crack. Apple gives customers instant
gratification
by keeping inventory in stores, unlike its rivals. Apple has opened its
stores
slowly, building up anticipation for its stores. Finally, those stores are
some of the toniest in retail—encouraging customers to drop far more money
than
they might in a dusty computer shop or utilitarian web site.

"This may be as much an indicator that Apple's store placement is better
than Tiffany's," Enderle Group analyst Rob Enderle said.

Apple's success comes despite Gateway's retail disaster. When Apple pushed
into retail in 2001 Gateway had just shut down 10 percent of its Gateway
Country Stores. Gateway closed the last of its stores in 2004.

By contrast, Apple, known for its premium products, has successfully
pushed a
higher-margin business while other computer makers have duked it out over
razor-thin margins. Apple stores, on average under 6,000 square feet, each
bring
in more than $23 million in annual sales, according to the Bernstein
report.
That compares with annual sales per store of $38 million at Best Buy,
which has
stores about seven times larger.

"If you're measuring a store in terms of production per store, that's
pretty
impressive," Mr. Enderle said. "That should be a wakeup for Best Buy."

Apple's stellar store sales are also in sharp contrast to Circuit City
Stores, which reported a loss Tuesday, and Best Buy, which last week
reported profit
weaker than expected.

It might not come as much of a surprise that Best Buy's sales team of blue
shirts is moving significantly lower sales per square foot than Apple's
salespeople. Plus, it certainly can't hurt to have stores such as its
Fifth Avenue
Gallery store in New York City look more like a small museum designed in
the form
of a glass box. That attracts people alone.

Indeed, Mr. Sacconaghi said that Apple's retail stores have played a
significant part in Apple's success over the past five years.

"Our research points to Apple stores having boosted revenue and margins
over
the last five years, although perhaps not to the degree that many
investors
may realize, as our analysis point to share shifts from indirect sales,
rather
than incremental share gains," wrote Sacconaghi.

The analyst said Apple retail stores also had an influence on brand
awareness. That brand awareness is equivalent to $60 million spent on
advertising, he
noted.

Apple has 170 retail locations in four countries. The Mac maker has about
150
U.S. locations.

"Apple has taken a more measured approach to store openings, with roughly
half as many [as Gateway] after five years, and chose to locate its stores
in
high-visibility, high-traffic (and high-rent) locations," Mr. Sacconaghi
noted.

In retrospect, Apple's strategy was very different from that of rival
Gateway. Gateway retail stores were each generating about $8 million in
annual sales,
compared with Apple's $23 million per store. Gateway went gangbusters on
store openings, expanding into 300 stores in five years.

"Gateway forgot the primary retail lesson: location, location, location,"
Mr. Enderle said.

In fiscal 2006, Apple's retail operations kicked in $200 million in
operating
profit, as well as $663 million in manufacturing product linked to Apple
products sold.

"Apple's retail strategy has also been profitable, ev

One of the more interesting aspects of nukes as well as any new power

I was on the team finishing one of the last nuke units to be completed - in
1984 or so, I was part of the team that was "Scheduling" the completion of
the paper work needed to allow startup to begin and continue - we took up 4
double wides with desks pretty well crammed in - all those people - around
120 IIRC creating schedules showing how each final piece of paper - which
usually representated some inspection or other and followed the steps needed
to move from person to person or team to team getting signatures. It was a
massive amount of paperwork (and a massive cost) which was frustrating
because a delay in one document delayed many others - and in those days we
didn't have PCs on every desk - we used McDonald-Douglas mainframes to
update the computerized schedules and see how far behind we were ;-)

Nowadays people worry about the transport of waste nuke material traveling
to waste receptacles - the containers they're in are so unbelievably
strong - watched a video showing a tractor trailer with a container on it
being hit by a train going 60mph - not even a whiff of radioactivity
escaped. *I* was impressed. ;-)

Sorry for the ramblings - some times it just pours out.

Not only do modern power plants need emergency gen sets, most are designed
so that so that they need grid power to start up. There have been many
instances where the grid failed, and a single plant tried to carry the
load
which was too much, then tripped off the line and went stone cold
dark/dead
until the grid came back up. Feed pumps, lights, instrumentation, etc.
all
need power from somewhere *before* a plant can make stream and start its
own
generators. So Nukes typically have an on-site back up power system, so
as

to be able to keep the lights and pumps on when the grid fails.

Gateway stores were somewhat of an oddity. They carried laptops, desktops,
and monitors that people could check out in the store. The merchandise,
however,
couldn’t be purchased on the spot. The Country Stores carried no inventory
and customers would have to wait days for computers to be delivered. To the
impulse buyer it was a buzz kill.

2 seconds before it died. So, as I crank more times, it last a
little bit longer. Condition of battery is 2 year old, car has 112K

more problem in starting again. But when cold, it starts all over
again.

b) recently I did replaced the original radio with a in-dash CD.
I had sound on the left side speakers but very low or no sound

I do have sound. How can I resolve this problem?

I was graciously unconscious when i had all 4 third molars out (at once..
on dec 23rd some years back).. apparently they had to do a lot of work as
mine were all horizontally impacted below the gumline. not a one came out
in one piece, I awoke with a sewn shut jaw (I coupld pass a level teaspoon
into it)... Some years later I noticed curious zig-zag scars on the
insides of my cheeks that go from the corners of my mouth all the way
round to the back

Feh!

I hope to NEVER have any dental surgery again!

fitting a mechanically controlled IP with a proper ALDA onto a

I beg to differ on that one, in 1930 Caddilac had a V16 called the Dual
Windshield Sport Phaeton. It had a 452 cid engine that made 165 hp with a
3

speed tranny. It was made built from 1930 to 1931 and cost $5,500 to
$10,000. Lincoln had a V12 before the V16 and it was built in 1932 as
Lincolns answer to the V16 Caddy. That one was called the Lincoln KB that
had a 7.34 liter V12 that made 150 hp with a 3 speed.

Re: [MBZ] considering brake repair....

Loren Faeth wrote:
Nothing tricky if you have bled brakes before. I'd replace the hoses,
flush out the fluid and consider using silicone fluid. I know the purists
will flame me for the heresy. I have silicone in 3 or 4 MBs for 5-6 years
with no problems or complaints. If you use DOT4 fluid, be sure you don't
put DOT3 garbage in it. Do it yourself and put $1000 in your wallet. Then
use it to take SWMBO out. She will love you for it and you will have the
change in your pocket.

Silicone fluid is great for racing and other specialty applications
where the system is routinely maintained VERY frequently. DO NOT USE
silicone fluid in any car with ABS. The ABS pulsations cause "air"
bubbles to form! That's the primary reason for the prohibition to using
silicone fluid in Mercedes, but if you DO use silicone fluid in a
Mercedes, the system will need to be flushed much more frequently than
with conventional fluid as the silicone fluid won't bind with water and
the water that accumulates will need to be removed by flushing the
system (or the lines will rust from the inside out).

No question that DOT IV or IV+ fluid is superior to DOT III fluid. As to
mixing DOT III with DOT IV fluids, there will be few problems, but the
mix will have characteristics closer to III than to IV and you'll need
to change the fluid more frequently than you would if using pure IV.
Boiling temp will be lowered to very close to the boiling point of III
as will with tendency to sequester water. If you use III or a mix of III
and IV, change the fluid at least every year. IV can go at least 2 years
between flushes.

I was going to get Nokian Hakkapeliitas, but the only tire shop in New

Four Blizzaks on my 83 300D are super on ice or snow. I used to put 200 lbs
of roofing shingles in my trunk for the winter, but with the Blizzaks and no
extra weight it is much, much better. I CAN GO WHERE NO MB COULD GO BEFORE!

It's amazing how our bodies change as we age - Abd how fragile we really
are - I never had allergies until a few years ago and now I have them bad
enough to require medication - the disease that disabled me struck ~10 years
ago and antibodies in my blood are attcking the mylin covering on my
nerves - causing the signals normally sent to the brain to be confused - now
my feet are numb except for the intense pain caused by the nerves
themselves - To look at my feet you'd see no injury, but when I scream in
pain the pain is very real.

It's odd...I used to be able to do all the stuff...all the crazy rides at
Six flags for example, reading or playing cribbage in the back of the van
on
the way to work. Then all of a sudden, I can't ride rides, I can't read in
a

moving car, I have to sit in the front seat...and all this happend almost
overnight about 5 or six years ago. Wicked motion sickness baby puss.

Another thing for me to be thankful of, I am decidedly not a hurler...
I'd swallowed a bunch of blood at some point in having my wisdom teeth
out. My stomach objected.
Other than that I rarely yawn in technicolor.

I'm a "hurler" as the recovery nurse called me as I was coming to after
having my shoulder repaired. I was yacking every where.
Stopped several times on the way home to blow. When I had a hernia
repaired,
Dr. put some wicked dramimine type patch on me before they knocked me
out
and I yacked not upon coming to. I had to wear the patch for four days.
Hopefully they can patch me when they hack out my choppers...

Thanks Tom, but,

You're the second person to comment on New England thinking about my post-I
have to confess-I am not a native New Englander-I am from Pennsylvania-in
fact I spent 3 years on your area-attending Penn State. But you're right it
is certain logic-we all have our flaws/obsessions and we need to just deal
with them. In the 36 years we have been married I have had eight
antique/vintage/collector cars and trucks, including the 79 240D which I
used as daily driver of 500 miles a week the first 3 1/2 years I had it. I
also learned not to ask her to go to old car shows-esp. when I would spend a
week at Hershey and Carlisle shows in the fall. Hope you get the 220D-I am
envious.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel Convertible

2006-12-23 Thread Dwight E. Giles, Jr
I was trying to figure out the zeroes-wonder if it refers to options? I
don't ordinarily hang around Barrett auctions. Well maybe Babbsie likes the
open air diesel smell and noise-might remind her of New York. (No flames _I
lived in NYC for three years and loved it.)

Wow, a 200hp, zero cylinder 300CD.
Barrett's must not be experts on 617 engines.
I wonder if the part about "only two made, Babbsie has
the other one" is true.
