Re: [MBZ] NOW Today's Puzzler

2007-02-15 Thread Curt Raymond

So I'll be interested in finding what it was that this cured.

Wondering if you've either got a leak in a fuel line or a bad fuel filter.

That car should definately start at 17 degrees, the windchill does NOT lower
the temp.

Reames wins!! I pumped the primer pump for about 20 seconds, which I
suppose moved the fuel past whatever obstruction existed. I would
never
think of removing the air cleaner or starting a fire - very creative
suggestions, and both merit Honorable Mentions for Kaleb and Bill.

John - I don't think anyone here in D.C. brews Ristrettoes
(Ristrettos?),
but you are welcome to the best that Puccini's has to offer. Puccini's
is a
small independent coffee shop located a couple blocks from the White
House.
The barista is an Ethiopian named Isaac. Let me know when you want to
claim
your prize.

And I guess the executives will get nice fat bonuses for being so
incompotent.
The sooner Daimler-Benz gets rid of Chrysler the better, I mean that 300C
would have to be the ugliest thing on this planet(it's like a shoebox on
wheels) and I can't see how Chrysler has added anything to DB, except for
cheapening the brand.

OK, I have a puzzler. Let's see how good you all are. FIist correct reply
wins a FREE Puccini coffee (must be collected in Washington, D.C.)

1985 300CD. For the past week we plugged in the block heater and the car
started instantly and perfectly in gtemps. as low as 10 degrees F.
Yesterday, the alley was iced up so we had to park on the street overnight,
with no way to plug in the block heater. Temp. was 17 degrees this AM with
a wind chill of maybe 5. We glowed and kept glowing 10 seconds after the
light went out. Engine turned but would not fire. Tried twice more, using
the gas pedal, but to no avail! I had her pop the hood and try a fourth
time while I watched - still turned but no dice. Battery was strong,
fortunately. I stared at the engine, thought deeply and then fiddled with
something in the engine area. I then myself tried to start it again using
the same preglow procedure. This time the engine fired instantly and ran
flawlessly.

Question: What exactly did I do under the hood?

Hint: I have never done this before or heard of this tactic being used as a
technique for getting a balky diesel to start in cold weather. This doesn't
prove or mean anything but then again, it might.

Good luck, and apologies in advance if this puzzler is wya too elementary
and an insult to the collective Okiebenz intelligence.

Maybe they can sell to Toyota. They seem to be taking over the industry. Can't
quite understand why. We have 2
Toyotas right now (in addition to 3 Fords, the Benz and a Chevy) and I don't
think the Toyotas are any better than
the rest. Didn't we just have this thread recently?

Weekly Retail On-Highway Diesel Prices (February 19, 2007)(data release
2/20/2007)

Beginning in June 2006, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
regulations
required that petroleum refiners and importers must ensure that at least 80
percent of the volume of highway diesel fuel they supply be Ultra-Low Sulfur
Diesel (ULSD). All 2007 and later model year diesel-fueled on-highway
vehicles
will be equipped with emission control systems that require ULSD, which
cannot
exceed a maximum sulfur content of 15 parts per million (ppm).

By December 2010, all on-highway diesel will have to be ULSD. California
has
accelerated the schedule, with retail stations required to sell only ULSD by
September 2006. Between 2006 and 2010, both ULSD and low sulfur diesel
(LSD) may
be offered for sale outside of California, with some diesel fuel outlets
carrying
both fuels and others choosing to sell only one or the other.

Until recently, EIA has collected the price of on-highway fuel without
distinguishing the sulfur level. Recently, the weekly on-highway diesel
price
survey began collecting diesel prices for Low Sulfur (LSD), diesel between
15 ppm
and 500 ppm sulfur, and ULSD separately. These data were then analyzed to
determine the accuracy of the prices by sulfur content. On February 20,
2007 EIA
will begin releasing the additional sulfur price information that is
determined
to be accurate during the transition period of LSD to ULSD.

This time the engine fired instantly and ran
flawlessly.

There is ALMOST nothing in the engine compartment that influences cold
starting.

Was the hand pump tight and/or did you pump it? Was the glow plug fuse
tightly secured?

What you describe can happen if there is a little water in the fuel or
the cloud point of the fuel isn't quite high enough. By the 4th-5th try,
the ice or wax that was blocking unrestricted fuel flow may have been
displaced. What you describe can also happen if one or two valves are
just a tad tight (so that compression is down just a bit). ANYTHING that
warms the engine even a little can turn a non-start into a start if you
are close.

You said that you depressed the accelerator pedal at least once before
trying to start (to be sure the rack was off the stop position) and held
the pedal at least halfway down while trying to start!

I continue to be dumbfounded that almost nobody follows Mercedes'
recommendation that once you start cranking, KEEP cranking until the
engine starts - DO NOT STOP CRANKING - DO NOT TRY A SECOND TIME (as you
would with a gasoline car) - just keep cranking until the engine starts
or the battery goes dead. That offers absolutely the best chance of
starting the engine in really cold weather. Any other strategy offers
less chance of the engine starting.

You MUST of course do all the proper preparation before you start
cranking. That includes insuring that the fuel is properly winterized
and free of water, the battery is properly charged, the preglow system
is working properly and the valves are adjusted so that none of them are
tight. Then the pedal must be depressed to the floor at least once (2 or
3 times won't hurt) and the pedal held at least half way down while
cranking. I try to insure that the total preglow period before starting
to crank is close to 30 seconds (that allows the plugs to reach their
maximum 1180 deg. C. temp) and then I start cranking until the engine
starts. If the actual temps are below the minimum start point (without a
block heater) which is between 10 and 15 below zero F for my OM60x
engines (with Mobil 1 in them), then I either need to use the block
heater or at least blow heated air (say from a hair dryer) into the air
intake for 3-5 minutes before I try to start the car.

My 300SD when parked up hill would drain the fuel from the fuel filter. Then
it would start the next morning run for about 2 seconds and die. Never to
start again, would kill battery before starting.

Found out that the fuel filter was allowing air to get in, but would not
leak fuel. Only found it after replacing fuel filter and noticing the filter
was loose, and after the problem was gone. At that point it was obvious,
that I should have pumped the primer.

Of course, I speak in jest, because Rusty is already his customers' best

OK, I have a puzzler. Let's see how good you all are. FIist correct
reply

wins a FREE Puccini coffee (must be collected in Washington, D.C.)

1985 300CD. For the past week we plugged in the block heater and the car
started instantly and perfectly in gtemps. as low as 10 degrees F.
Yesterday, the alley was iced up so we had to park on the street
overnight,
with no way to plug in the block heater. Temp. was 17 degrees this AM
with

a wind chill of maybe 5. We glowed and kept glowing 10 seconds after the
light went out. Engine turned but would not fire. Tried twice more,
using

the gas pedal, but to no avail!

Hint: I have never done this before or heard of this tactic being used as
a
technique for getting a balky diesel to start in cold weather. This
doesn't

prove or mean anything but then again, it might.

Good luck, and apologies in advance if this puzzler is wya too elementary
and an insult to the collective Okiebenz intelligence.

Bob,

Jeez, that's right in your neighborhood. I went to the PHx library
today

and checked the service bulletins in AllData again. It says models from
98 to
2001. The TSB was issued 12/5/2003. There may be later ones, but I
didn't
see any. The TSB did not discuss warranty pass throughs, though it did
caution dealers to check the FSS history for excessive mileage between
oil changes.
Apparently the PCM maintains an internal history of when the FSS was
reset,
and at what mileage on the oil.

What year is the Acura? the 300D?

Some of the 617's had an issue with the rocker cover (needing epoxy some

cleaner just couldn't keep up. The 84 I had with close to 200K when
totaled was maybe a qt between 3k changes, and a fair amount of that was
leaking. The 603 engines dont seem to use any (my brother put in excess
of 70K on an 87 SDL in about 2.5-3 years and did not need to add any
between changes). The 606's seem pretty close to oil-tight. One of the
99's that I have "uses" about 1qt/4k, BUT its leaking from the oil cooler
lines. The other one, well I can't really measure the consumption on it.

When you compare engines, it only seems fair to compare engines of similar
ages/design eras...

and checked the service bulletins in AllData again.

My driver showed me his car a few years ago. 1995 model, 12v 6BT, Bosch P7100,
Spicer 5sp/OD, I think it had about 295k on it and was running just fine. When
you listen to them run through the gears you get the impression that it's
full throttle every time unless somebody is in front of them.

Somewhere a MIT prof has a web page about college pricing. He calls it
the perfect racket for extracting monopoly rents. You set the price way
high, and then out of the goodness of your heart guarantee that anybody
can afford to attend. Then you collect more data from the families than
if they were applying for a mortgage, use the data to determine the very
most that they can afford to pay, and charge them that.

are well cheap and can not afford to keep them maintained.

If you fix every little thing when it goes bad, the car will last forever.
If you wait too long to fix the little things they add up to point where it

What year is the Acura? the 300D?

Some of the 617's had an issue with the rocker cover (needing epoxy some
place) which lead to excessive blow-by, and the separator in the air
cleaner just couldn't keep up.

When you compare engines, it only seems fair to compare engines of similar
ages/design eras...

just my thoughts
