[MBZ] 300SD for $250
Just got a call from the guy selling the car. Turns out it is a 1985 300SD, 159k miles. He says the interior is pretty good, but needs cleaning and the windows don't work exactly right. It is green with a green interior. My main interest in the car is the transmission, which he says is good. If I can pull that and put it in my 1981 300SD that would be quite helpful as mine is starting to have more issues than I am happy with. Anyone have knowledge about that? VIN is WDBCB20C3FA094583 I'd appreciate knowing what that shows if someone will run it for me.. Thanks - - BillR Jacksonville FL 1981 300SD 285k miles

You are correct on that count. I'll actually be putting more weight on the knowledge from the list about the possibility of a transmission swap. IIRC, the torque converter to crankshaft centering pin is larger on the '85 than the earlier 617 engine/tranny combinations. If I'm remembering correctly, the torque converter from the $250 car won't fit your engine. What was not normal was my discovery that I could climb a vertical drain pipe without using my legs, just walked up it with my hands. Took me seconds to get to the roof of the Domino's and retrieve the dough trays that some moron threw up there. Years later, working at the Saab shop, when my boss sent the rack from his 900 GLE in for a rebuild, he procured a manual rack so he could keep driving his car. The only manny rack in a US 900 was in the rare 900 EMS. Imagine the steering from my car in a heavier chassis. My boss was at least 60 years old at the time. He was not amused, but he drove it that way for two weeks. When his rack came back, he had me shove whatever I was working on out of my bay so I could upgrade his car to power steering immediately. Those two weeks are probably the only instance in which a Saab 900 wore EMS steering and a handicap license plate. Re: [MBZ] Golly, I hope I'm not on crack
Yeah, I looked around first and saw similar books for W113 and Adenauers going for $250+ and I figured this are Bus and Truck versions and couldn't find any others like it. Now in hindsight I expect they'll go back up lower with $79 BIN. Scarcity is only one half the high-price equation. Desirability is the other. There is a 60's Vauxhall at the U-Pull car-for-sale area. I bet it doesn't move any time soon. (It's really nasty. But rare. At least around here.) -- Jim
Re: [MBZ] Freaky Fuel Gauge
Don - The gauge 0n my SD was so full of algae corpses that the float couldn't even go to empty. Makes it real easy to run out of fuel that way. It was also a challenge to clean the blasted thing as I had to take it all apart and yes I did break the wire. Luckily it was where it attaches at the bottom and I was able to solder it back together. Still working fine about 3 years later. Re: [MBZ] 300SD for $250
Bill - there are a lot of improvements between '81 and '85 on the 126 SD, so that you would get some neat stuff if you kept the '85 and used the '81 for parts. The obvious key is rust - it doesn't take much for a car to become a real money sink. Just a few items that changed - '83 to '84, the tach did away with the troublesome plug in amp on the fender well, and has its own pickup from the flywheel. Also in '84, you got the outside air temp readout, as well as 2 position memory seats. And if the '85 has MBTex instead of leather, you will find the seats to be about as wear proof (and maintenance free) as can be. Probably some injection system, transmission control, and alarm system upgrades, too. Re: [MBZ] Golly, I hope I'm not on crack
Vince, your listings are rather decent, I must say (to quote Martin Short's Ed Grimsley character). One cavil, however. The rear doors on the 300TD wagon are larger than the 300D sedans, so it is UNlikely the rear door panel you're selling will fit both types of W123 diesel. If I am correct in this(there's always a first time) your should probably revise your listing. 1983 300td 1985 300cd Come to think of it, it could be my misperception, I've never actually tried to cross them, thanks for bringing it to my attention, I'll investigate. I do know the rear doors and quarter glass are shaped differently... I have to update my disclaimer already too. I've also got a guy in Taiwan who missed Ships to United States 3 times and Shipping to United States Only twice! What fun! I want to allow non-us ebay bidders because so far two of them have US addresses I can send it to. Hope there's a feature for that... I care! :) Wish I'd have known you were selling parts a little earlier; I just bought a cache of 123 parts on craigslist, the only problem being that they're all the way down in Cape Goober... Vince, do you by chance have or know where I might find a set of French-spec jaune selectif fog light reflectors for Bosch 123 headlights? Tom Thanks Tom. What do you mean, not the apparent long-out-of-production holy grail of euro lenses do you? The closest I've ever come is a car that was originally equipped with them and lost in the Federale-ization. Did the parts come offered with a mis-restored coupe? Re: [MBZ] Rust starting -- how to handle it
Sadly, when rust can be seen there is almost certainly more that is unseen. The area you describe is a typical place for W123 rust to start - moisture gets into the rockers and starts eating them from the inside out. My 78 has rust in the same place. There are some products which will slow it down. You can open up the rocker by drilling a hole and gain access or remove the plugs that are located in the rockers, There are products which come with a long spray tube that can be fed into the hole and the product sprayed around as much as possible. One product I'm familiar with has a waxy feel which flows before becoming firm. But it is mostly to prevent more rust rather than stopping what you have. The best, most permanent way to fix it is to replace the damaged metal by cutting away the rust and welding a new piece of metal in its place. This can get expensive unless you have bodyworking skills. Also, it is typical to find more rust as the visible stuff is cut away. It's also importtant to stop the water from getting it - sometimes the front or rear windshield gaskets wil leak and the water eventually gets to the floors and starts attacking the inner rocker panels - actually this is probably the most likely source. It can also eat a hole thru the floors (BTDT). To convert what you have will require something like POR15 (PaintOverRust) or some of the many products offered by the Eastwood Co. I have been happy with some spray called (oddly) Rust Converter which is available at FLAPS and Walmart. But access is the biggest problem - you must be able to get the stuff onto the rust for it to work. As a starter I suggest you get the Eastwood catalog and check out the rust combatting products. Their website will also help. Based on personal experience, once the rust starts it becomes a frustrating constant battle to stop it or even slow it down. Good luck. Re: [MBZ] Rust starting -- how to handle it
Night school course at the local highschool on how to use a MIG welder. The only way to deal with rust is to cut it out and replace metal. Anything else is just to make it look good for long enough to sell the problem to someone else. At the bottom of the front quarter panel, just behind the wheel, there are a few blisters starting in the paint and some rusty color bleeding through. I know it's probably inevitable in a daily driver when salt is used on the roads. What's the best way to deal with this, stop it or at least slow it as much as possible? [MBZ] $250 1985 300SD
Based on what the guy said about it not going over 65 MPH I bought fuel filters and headed out. When I saw the car I was a bit reluctant to stop, but figured it was worth a look. The odo says 217k miles. Carfax says 204k in '96, so I guess the 217k is possible if it spent a lot of time just sitting for the past decade. When I looked at the filters they looked new, so I didn't change them. Lady said the battery always dies overnight, so she had on the porch in a charger. It started easily and showed very little smoke, though she said it did smoke when started, but quit fairly soon. Just as on my 300SD the oil pressure pegged when the key was turned.. New theory on why it won't reach interstate speeds and runs poorly when started and the rest of the time also: I think it is only running on 4 cylinders at best, even though there was little smoke at start up. WAG is at least one bad glow plug. Ran rough the whole time. The Good: Tires are indeed new and look good. Seats - Green MBtex, and in pretty good shape. I saw no tears, though the driver's seat does seem to be pulling away from the pad a bit. I think the engine is good, though I am not a mechanic, and it didn't have much power. Only ran it for 5 minutes, but it never did settle down. The only odd noise, other than hearing what I think was only 4 cylinders rather than 5, was an occasional squeak from a pulley on the RF somewhere. I was not brave enough to try the AC, especially with the cooling line missing. OEM Becker radio, which she says works great, but would not turn on when I tried it. Some electrical short/problem would not be a surprise, but the radio looked good, if in serious need of cleaning. I sure wouldn't kick it out of my car. Very little rust on the car. A touch around the antenna, a hole [doesn't look like from rust, though] LF fender. Some rust spots and a small hole in the bumper. Light surface rust on one jack port, the others seemed ok. Somewhat funky looking spoiler looked to have been attached by a carpenter [no aspersions on carpenters, but that skill does not always translate properly to body work.] Trunk looked clean and dry after a hard rain. Much of the wood looks ok, though the piece around the shifter is pretty cracked up. Glass looks good. Outside temp sensor and display seemed in working order All body panels look ok. The Bad: ABS light stayed on full time. I didn't think the transmission was much better than mine. It is about where mine was a year ago. I wouldn't be willing to transplant even if my crank could be bored out so the pin would fit. It would not be enough to stop me from buying the vehicle if I could do the work, but at @$80/hour lots of stuff get's expensive pretty quick. I wouldn't be seriously concerned about it for another 50k miles or so [another WAG]. AND, the position points were wrong. D was neutral, N was reverse, etc. Dash seems pretty cracked under the almost faded to blue dash pad. Door switches are missing on both sides. He said the power windows didn't work too well. Sunroof is dropped 1/2 , LR corner. Unidentified @ 2 x 7 plastic flap lying on the floor. Front looks to have been tagged a bit. Hood ornament is missing, hood will not close down all the way, a cooler line is sticking out with a drywall screw in the end, grill seems out of place, more angled out than it should be, and some pieces are missing between the bumper and the grill and light assemblies. RF light assembly is messed up a bit, and the side light/blinker is gone altogether. Radiator seems to be held together on the right top by JB weld. Washer reservoir is missing Over a bumpy driveway there seems to be some odd 'clunks'. The Ugly: A paint job that just screams We paint your entire car in one hour or less for $25. Large slabs of peeling paint on the sunroof, paint overspray peeling off many other parts of the car. Mine is a 10' car, this one looks to be a 75' car, without glasses. No floor mats or carpet in the front. Didn't investigate the back.. Door panel tops that have seen too much sun. So... is it worth $250 ? If you need tires, a probably useful engine and a questionable but reasonably good transmission, solid but dirty seats, a Becker radio [maybe working], some glass, or other parts I would have no idea about, maybe. It is drivable, and they guy drove it home from Green Cove Springs [all of 10 - 15 miles]. While I wouldn't be concerned about driving my 1981 300SD to Indiana, I would only take this one after some serious diagnostic and repair work, and with a really good contingency plan. I didn't stop by the bank. BillR Jacksonville FL 1981 300SD 285K miles
Re: [MBZ] $250 1985 300SD
Yeah but for $250 it is a really really good deal, a good cheap Benz! I know all the advice in that regard, but if you have a place to put it, a tolerant domestic manager, and some time and interest in hacking on it to get it running half decent, it would a fun bit of hobby and then you could sell it for a bio-dmobile. A good kid's car even, if it gets banged up then who cares... Besides that, I know you really want to. --R BillR wrote: Based on what the guy said about it not going over 65 MPH I bought fuel filters and headed out. [MBZ] Diesel engines available
I have two engines from my '81 300SD in Columbia, SC. Neither are running, neither have all the extras. One has a bad main bearing/crank, but a good top end and head, CA car. The other probably has a decent bottom end but bad compression, and I know nothing else about that one, but was sold as being a known engine that was good. They lied about that. Both are available for the picking up. Son has an engine lift so could assist with loading [if he is home] or you could use the lift and DYI. Let me know. Any idea of what the original outside color might have been? the VIN plate in front of the radiator should give the codes. As for the engine, a bad glow plug would not cause it to run on 4 cylinders after just a minute or so after starting. More likely a plugged injector? Might be important to have someone check the timing chain stretch, and a valve adjustment is probably badly needed. At least a compression check will show if there is hope to get it running better. But in any case, the car seems to be worth much more than $250 if you just part it out. Or better yet, use the bits and pieces from your '81 (after you get the outside cosmetics taken care of) and you will have a better '85! Shame it isn't white - I might have to stop by on my way to Southern Treffen in Lakeland in a couple of weeks. Can't argue that it could be fun, but: In this area cars that looked like that one would not be appreciated, and one visit from the code enforcement folks was enough; Property manager [SWMBO] would not be tolerant of either the car [maybe Ok if I kept my car cover on it] or of the possibility that I would do something that would get me either over-heated or over-tired. Both of which are no-no's for me according to her and my cardiologist. My 105 # lab 'puppy' would eat it if I found a place to put it in the back;. What bit of car time I have is well used on my baby - my '81 300SD. I have an interest in cars and love my baby, but am not knowledgable enough to do it myself, nor do I have the tools or place to work on it, if I did have the strength. Think I'll pass on this one, but would be happy to park it for a time for one of you if you want. .
