Re: [MBZ] Strip Fuse replacement - was Mystery solved

2007-03-03 Thread Loren Faeth
no, I had not considered that option. I never knew they were readily
available. On my 126. the 30A strip fuse is a retrofit after the original
fuse in the fusebox melted the fuseholder. Its a good idea. Having
experience with the Prince of Darkness (Lucas) I can see how you had
figured that out!

At 03:06 PM 3/2/2007, you wrote:

Loren,

Have you considered using an automatic or manual reset thermal breaker?
They are available at most auto parts stores. A common problem on a 123 is
the fuse holders get in poor condition for two fuses, the fuse for the ACC
and the fuse for the electric condensor fan (the one in front of the
radiator and a/c condensor). When these holders get in poor condition, they
will heat the fuse because of a poor connection, blowing the fuse. I
re-routed the wiring for these two circuits from the fuse box to some
automatic reset thermal breakers to solve fuse blowing.

I have also used them in our British cars to help keep the smoke in those
Lucas electrical systems.

Good for you! How on earth did you find a 30 Amp strip fuse? I could not
buy any from stealerships, they could not even find a part number. Rusty
sent me 60 Amp glow fuses in place of the 30A ACC fuses I ordered. My
400k SDL still has a 16 ga jumper wire based on the theory that 16 ga wire
 melts with about 30 Amps.

Now you know why we recommend all MB fuses be changed every 10 years - they
develop fine cracks that are impossible to see - of course once they're
removed it becomes obvious that they're broken.

Subject: [MBZ] Mystery solved

Last night on my way home, my check engine light came on. I have a 1990
300SEL 135K. I could not remember whether my car had OBDI and did not
know what this indicated. So, pulled out my owner's manual. It said
that only California models had the OBD. This surpised me and I don't
know whether that is the case or not.

At any rate, when I started the car later that night the light was not
on. It was not on when I started this morning, but it did come on
during my drive to work. I had to drive to an appointment about 60
miles away and was a little concerned with what was going on. As I was
driving to my appointment, I noticed I was getting hotter and hotter, I
turned down the temperature and pushed the button for high. Nothing
happened. I thought someone was wrong with the ACC. I tried every
button and nothing happened. I made it to my appointment, forgot about
it and on the way back, I wondered whether I had a fuse out. I couldn't
find anything else that wasn't working.

I discovered that the same fuse that runs the ACC also controls the
on-board diagnostic system. Ta Da! Problem solved. Until I looked at
the fuse - it was fine. I thought. It looked fine, but when I removed
it, the strip was cracked and broken. When it was in the fuse holder it
looked solid, but on closer inspection it was blown. So, it was just a
fuse for both problems. This, of course, reinforces Dr. Booth's advice
- replace old FUSES!

Yep, that we do, but if you have a bill of sale they will go with that
 (or
$500, whatever is lower) for tax value. Being held up depends upon the
inspector. Usually they do try on headlamp aim, but I have the older
hoppy garage type aimers-- good for anything with the three glass nubs
  on the lens...

The inspectors are licensed by the state and if they do anything too
 hinky
you can go to the MSP on them...

BTW last time I got a car inspected it was at a stealership
 (deliberately)
and they found that the sway bar bushings were shot as was the engine
mounts. Given the car developed a nasty vibe to it when in gear with
 the
brakes on (right on the way to the inspection, augh!) I knew about the
mounts. I didn't know that the bushings got bad (I thought all 210 front
ends rattled a bit on low speed bumpy roads)... Anyhow, the sway bar
 links
practically fell apart when I disassembled things! ... Oh yeah, they
mentioned the rear brakes would pass but only had about 3kmi left on
them.. I replaced them for good measure.

Time before that was at a local gas station, and I saw a note for
 headlamp
aim (that was scratched out!) and that the high-beam indicator was not
working. Sure enough the thing had wiggled out of the socket. I popped
 it
back in and the guy looked and passed it on the spot. I guess I am
 pretty
  lucky.

Check the bottom water pump weep hole for the presence of coolant --
water pumps, in the early seal failure stage, will leak at strange
times. They may very well not leak while running, and hold pressure
just fine, but dribble on cooldown at some point, then stop again.

In later stages, they gush, that's easy to see!

[MBZ] New rules would slash diesel pollution

2007-03-03 Thread Walt Lasher
Published: Saturday, March 3, 2007
New rules would slash diesel pollution
Associated Press
WASHINGTON - The Environmental Protection Agency announced a plan Friday
that would do away with most of the smog and soot caused by diesel-burning
trains and boats.
It's an ambitious move supported by many environmentalists and air quality
officials.
Every major metropolitan area in the country will benefit from the huge
emissions reductions expected from this long-awaited rule, said Bill
Becker, executive director of the National Association of Clean Air
Agencies.
We estimate the emissions benefits will be equivalent to taking
three-quarters of a million diesel trucks off the road each year. EPA
deserves a thumbs up for this proposal, he said.
EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson proposed the new emission standards for
diesel locomotive engines, tugs, barges, ferries and recreational marine
engines. The toxic chemicals and soot in diesel exhaust contribute to smog
and can cause cancer.
By tackling the greatest remaining source of diesel emissions, we're
keeping our nation's clean air progress moving full steam ahead, Johnson
said in a statement.
The standards, if adopted and fully phased in, would reduce particulate
pollution from these engines by 90 percent and smog-forming nitrogen oxides
by 80 percent, the EPA said.
The EPA proposes tightening pollution standards for remanufactured
locomotives, newly built locomotives and marine diesel engines, as well as
longer-term technology upgrades. The standards for rebuilt trains would
apply as early as next year, while those for new locomotive and marine
diesel engines would be phased in starting in 2009 and take full effect a
decade from now.
The Diesel Technology Forum, an industry group, said EPA's approach toward
cutting diesel pollution from trains and boats is already succeeding with
highway trucks, but that it's important to promote more use of ultra-low
sulfur diesel along with cleaner-burning engines.
Costs of the new pollution requirements are estimated at $600 million by
2030, adding less than 3 percent to the price of a locomotive and 1 percent
to 3.6 percent to the price of boats using the cleaner engines.
Health benefits are estimated at $12 billion by 2030, including 1,500 fewer
premature deaths, 1,100 fewer hospitalizations and 170,000 more work days by
people breathing easier.

Tom-

Yea but...if you compare inspection in PA to NY, NY is a joke. At
least that was the case when I was there 6 years ago.

On the flip side, inspection in NJ has just been made even less
stringent than it already was...coming soon, cracked headlights/lenses
and bad license plate bulbs are no longer cause for failure. But you
do have to go to one of a limited number of state-run facilities to
get the rubber glove treatment.

Here in the great state of Alabama, we have no vehicle inspection we
 have
no smog testing. We also have very little rust almost no snow.

But I understand the plight of those of you in the poor states. I'm from
just south of Buffalo, NY I remember the pains of both.

Re: [MBZ] Mystery Water leak W123 300D

2007-03-03 Thread LarryT
Sometimes water will leak and drip onto a hot engine component which makes
it evaporate, eliminating the evidence of the leak.

Of course, the worst possible problem would be water leaking into the oil
inside the engine. If this happens the oil can become milky looking when
the water leak becomes significant. But 1.5mm is not significant.

Good Luck -

Subject: [MBZ] Mystery Water leak W123 300D

I am loosing 1.4 mm /week ( depth from coolant surface to filling point
) of coolant from my radiator. I have had the system pressure tested (
hot ) and cap tested and all ok. There appears to me no obvious leak
externally which seems to pint to an internal leak. Furthur this leak
occurs even when vehicle is not used i.e. remains cold. Is this still
consistant with a head gasket leak/cracked head? Was thinking of
retorquing head ( have the old non stretch bolts ) to make sure that's
ok.

Yeah - that is the part I left out. I could not have afforded stuff back
then either. Only guy I know who actually did that started buying land in
Broward County [Ft. Lauderdale area] before WWII. Everybody made fun of him
that he spent all of his $$ buying usless land. Ended up owning a good
chunk of Broward. When the GI's came home people quit making fun and
started saying 'Sir'. Oh, well...

I play that game once in a while - looking at back issues of Road
Track from the 60s always makes me wince - seeing things like 427 Cobra's
for $3000 and Bugatti's Typ 35's for $1750! Lots of similar prices for
equally invaluable vehicles like 300SL Gullwings and Roadsters, classic
Rolls, etc. - that bring 6 figures and ocassionally 7 figures for extra
special examples today.

Of course that was also the time we bought our 1st home for $18950
(new,
3 br in suburbs) and qualified for a FHA loan where payments were only
$95.

Sadly, I was making around $8000 per year at the time - so $3000 back then
was as far away as $300k is today!

Yeah, wow. For a mere $12,500 you get a car that will need an eight thousand
dollar engine transplant someday.

Pull the head now and check. You can replace a bent rod for less if
you catch it in time.
The current revision of the head gasket is a good thing to have
anyway. The original ones have a tendency to fail and blow oil into
the #1 cylinder.

I would not recommend this car to anyone not willing to get their hands dirty.
