Talking about coolant leaks, I was fiddling under the bonnet of my 190E the
other day because the breather hose came off and was making a wee bit of a
mess.
While I was fixing that I noticed a bit of coolant had dribbled out of the
top radiator hose, when I tried to pull the top hose off the
Those plastic tank rads cannot be repaired, anyway -- the aluminum
flange fails when you attempt to re-crimp it. Believe me, I tried with
the Volvo.
Don't use green coolant, it seems to make that plastic go brittle
faster, amongst other nasty things.
At least it broke in the drive cold

Hello Listers- I have a question, I have a 722.4 transmission in my '91
300D, 81k miles. I had a MB rebuilt put in 2 years ago, 8k miles ago.
I have noticed for the last couple of months that the 1-2 shift is a bit
soft, and I know the language of these descriptions can be difficult,
but by
Don't think the cheaper Nissen ones can be but the Behr units are repairable
once. It depends on the skill of the repairer and the place I went to for
advice does a lot of Behr radiators, they also do a lot of work for the
local stealerships.
And good on ya for owning up to having owned a
Do you mean 1-2 or 2-3 shift? Do the engine revs flare up during the shift?
Is there any difference between a cold box and operating temp box? May pay
to pull the pan to see if there is debris in there, while it is off a new
filter and fluid can't hurt.
Is there any warranty left on the box?
The Volvo 740/760/940/960 series were great cars, so were the 240s. I
have 240,000 miles or so on my diesel, Sis had 160,000 on hers when the
rad went (or the head gasket, hard to tell), and other than the
interior falling apart, ran great.
Newer ones are money pits, as my neighbors found
John - my '90 300D 2.5 has had a slight slow 1-2 shift for well over 150k
miles. The original transmission (untouched) is still running just fine at
230k miles and 17 years. All it gets is Mobil1 synthetic at each 30k mile
change of filter. It's been on the track at Summit Point several
I think it has a 2 year warranty. It expires very soon, April I think.
There is no flare at all, just a sort of overlap I guess the only way
to describe it is that all other changes are snappy and this one is
rather slushy, almost like the time itself to change between the gears
is 1 second
I've been told that the front fenders are partially welded on. Is this true,
or are they bolted on?

Some will argue that it starts in 2nd gear, and it does, IF you are very
light on the loud pedal. With any faster start, my experience is that it
starts in first, then does the 1-2, then 2-3, and finally the 3-4 shift.
Spirited acceleration (flooring it hard) takes the engine up to

They are not welded on.
The early ones have rustproofing goop that glues them on, so you need to
use heat to get them off.
It's not normal, it's a sign of wear. They don't do it when they are
new(er).
So I could be ok, since drive generally engaged pretty quickly before
this thing started? Reverse still does.
I don't have a lot to compare it with, since I have really only driven

Well on the earlier ones up to 82 or so they have that adhesive crap,
which makes them almost welded on. The later ones and ALL 240D's dont
have the adhesive and they are easy to remove. Dont ask me why all
years of 240D does not have it, very strange.

Most likely your vacuum control valve is just out of adjustment, John.
There's a very simple procedure to rectify that in the fsm, 7.1-1826.

I use it. Thanks, Rich.

Frnt fenders on my 91 126 are also just bolted on. 10 yrs ago, I changed

Maybe I am lucky but my 1983 300D with 280K miles that I have driven since

So I just got the latest oil analysis report on my 190D.
If you remember on previous reports I was seeing elevated levels of iron that
were making Larry say the rings were wearing and the car was in trouble.
Historically by 7000 miles the iron would be above the 100ppm limit that causes

Hi John,
A large % of shifting faults are caused by fluid/filter contaminated with
some kind of debris - for example, a piece of lint is lodged in the slide
for the valve controlling the shift in question. A fluid/filter change
*might* fix the problem - it certainly won't hurt.
Of course,
Removal of the fenders is detailed in WSM 88-100. If you don't have it I

In most states, road taxes do not supply sufficient moniey for
maintenance, let alone construction. FEDERAL highway/fuel taxes are
used for construction only, with the famous 90/10 split federal/state
money. The result is a vast interstate system in very poor repair.
