Clunk is bad, firm is OK. Clunk means something is loose or worn, in my case the rear diff mounts, possiblly a flex disk getting old. Tranny mounts can go bump too. On the 220D it's a pronounced clank due to wear on the spider carrier. Peter

Incorrect modulator pressure can also cause the CLUNK when shifting (particularly downshifting). The modulator is on the driver's side front of the transmission, and can be adjusted using a little T handle under a rubber dust cap. This is the thing the vacuum line goes into on the transmission.

Hi Royce, No problem - I'm contacting Harman Becker at Werners's suggestion to get them to modify my Becker - basically they'll add a 2.5mm (??) plug so I can plug a iPod or MP3 into it ( hidden hopefully) and keep the iPod in the glovebox. Werner has this setup and is happy with it.
