At the risk of disagreeing with Walt, my W123 CDs ($9.95 on eBay) have
proved extremely useful.

Just understand that for $9.95 what you are getting is most likely an
illegal bootleg (but working) copy.

I'd say that also if I was trying to bail out of one these money pits. I know
a local guy who used to own a very pretty 124 4-matic wagon as a business car
and he finally gave up and bought a VW diesel (Jetta, something?) and he was
one of many on the other MB lists who had replaced transfer cases because of
fluid swaps between the transmissions and transfer cases. It's seal failure and
"maintenance" is not the cause but just a bad design. MB gave up on this
design years ago and they have a new design (again) on the '07/'08 cars.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I asked my mechanic once
about the 4Matic (he had a TD with 4Matic for sale, don't remember
what year it was) and his answer was basically this: "Like most
Mercedes systems, they work well if they are maintained. They don't
tolerate neglect very well."

Every mechanic I've ever asked about the W124 4Matics has said,
basically, "If you want a four-wheel-drive German car, get an Audi."
I don't know anything about the 4Matic 210 and later cars. I do know
that the Quattro drivetrains in '80s Audis are typically
trouble-free---probably the most reliable part of the car (whereas in
the 4Matic the all-wheel-drive system is, from some reports, the least
reliable part).

I think you mean a 210.Check for rust on the front suspension and
under the inner doors. On another list, 210 owner had serious rust
issues taken care of but now it is rusting at the wheel well lips.
Rumor has it that MB cut back on their metal prep.

This era was the beginning of the end for MB quality. Check out the
interior plastics, etc and compare them to a W126 or W124...not nice!

The room that was converted from the back end of the garage. Turns
out that the whole crawl space under the house was flooded, and the
over-flow ran out into the "finished garage". Two (new) sump pumps
have most of the water out from under the house now. I'll run them
again in the morning, and start planning the fans to dry it out (if
the humidity ever gets below 99% again).

I don't know the answer to your question, but I asked my mechanic once
about the 4Matic (he had a TD with 4Matic for sale, don't remember
what year it was) and his answer was basically this: "Like most
Mercedes systems, they work well if they are maintained. They don't

Re: [MBZ] Severe weather

2007-05-09 Thread Tom Hargrave
Don,

I used to be one of those evil CB guys but I understand radio very well.
Back when CB was the rage, I had a list of Midland radios that I could boost
from 5 watts to 8 - 14 watts, depending on the model without causing
distortion (& FM). Most only required a resistor or resistor & final output
transistor change out. I was also running directional & could switch
directions by switching in & out strategically placed antennas. I'd ground 2
& make one live.

My uncle was a big time Ham operator. We built a vacuum tube linear &
mounted it in his trunk. We used a vibrator type power supply to provide AC
to the unit & b+ was 600 volts. It would melt the snow off the trunk lid. I
still play with vacuum tube equipment today.

Only Zaphod Beeblebrox is reported to have survived the Vortex unscathed

Luckily the floor isn't level, and the low areas are in the middle.
There's a little sheetrock damage, but not enough that I'm going to
worry about it for now. I did the conversion, and will replace what I
need to. It needs a new coat of paint anyway. I will be checking with
the insurance company, in the off chance that they'll pay out.

All the electronic (and electrical) equipment is well above the water
level, and the PC's never blinked.

Uh ... I'd answer with a zipper sort of comment if we were on Banned. ;-)

Re: [MBZ] Severe weather

The room that was converted from the back end of the garage. Turns
out that the whole crawl space under the house was flooded, and the
over-flow ran out into the "finished garage". Two (new) sump pumps
have most of the water out from under the house now. I'll run them
again in the morning, and start planning the fans to dry it out (if
the humidity ever gets below 99% again).

[MBZ] AAA Alternative Fuel Vehicle discount?

2007-05-09 Thread ernest breakfield

hi all!

a recent bit of correspondence from AAA mentions a new discount for
"Hybrid/Alternative Fuel Vehicles"; i asked about this when i called to
inquire about an unrelated issue, at first i was told that this only
related to non-Gasoline fueled vehicles (never mind that Diesels already
don't use Gasoline,...!) after much educating of the friendly Customer
Service agent about how BioD is not a "gasoline-related" product and
that no conversion of the vehicle was required to use it, i was told
that they could give me the discount if i were to be able to provide a
note from my mechanic stating that i was indeed using BioD. after more
explaining that i very often *was* the mechanic and that that it was
even entirely possible that i might be using fuel i had made myself and
asking if i should write the note myself, i was eventually told that i
would indeed have the discount applied to my account for (at least) that
car (our 300D). all of this was interspersed with lengthy waits on Hold
while superiors were apparently consulted, but they became excited
enough about it during the process that they were looking for a way to
make it happen.

it's only a 5% discount and i'm happy to get it; but moreover, i'm
happy to take part in any effort that an insurance company would make to
recognize the efforts we make to use a fuel like BioD.

cheers!
