Your symptoms at first sounded like a broken torque converter but if the
tranny has a little bit of power than it is not what happened to my 240D.
Basically I was at a light and went to take off when nothing happened.
Engine was fine but the car would not move forward or back. It turned out

the torque converter has a couple of ears which engage into the tranny
which sheared off. Thus the torque converter would just spin.
Those are the drive for the front pump. The main torque output
is through the center shaft. No pump == no hydraulic pressure ==
no go. They get snapped off
I'd take the old Cobra. Maybe that's just me.

Drove my daughter's 1997 Civic for a few days while doing some routine
maintenance on it. While feels like a tin can, is incredibly slow, and
has very average handling, I certainly can't argue with the 30+ MPG
and 148Kmiles with nothing but basic maintenance.
