When I was at the Rusty Q in 2002 we all went back to Rusty's and they put
on some Lightfoot. His wife was impressed that I knew where he lived.

Gordon had been in hospital the year before I tink, for a serious illness
that he got over eventually. Can't remember what it was but it was serious.
He started out in Toronto's bohemian coffee house scene in the Yorkville
area of downtown along with Joni Mitchell when she came in from
Saskatchewan.

Yeah, I think he has some stomach problems that resulted in a bleed.
Yorkville was kind of a hippie hangout back then.  Today it's all upmarket
and trendy cafes and shops.  I still go there once in a while to hangout
with friends, have a coffee and buy some cigars. They have a great cigar
shop there.  The Stones and others still hang out there when they come to
town, but now, you have to book a table in advance. hee hee.

He didn't come into the shop much, the boss would often take stuff he was
interested in over to his place.  he would come in from time to time.  He
had a real think for vintage Martin accountics. :-) Bruce Coburn was a
regular visitor too.  He was a very cool guy.  He once bought a custom
flying V guitar I wanted, so I ended up buying another flying V off a roadie
with the Toronto based band called Triumph.  As with so many of those guys,
when they would sit and play for you, their talent was so much greater than
anything you would hear on their recordings.  They were fun times thought!

left side was a round white thingy with electrical connections that were 
disconnected.

Question: Should I call this something other than thingy?

It's part of the alarm system that went off spontaneously MUCH too often 
and that Mercedes recommended be disconnected.

Re SWMBO's Toy Corolla 1999. Purchased an Interdynamics R143a recharge setup
at Wally World, $27.47. Simple instructions and worked as advertised. Any idiot 
can do it, even me (after suitable instruction). IIoz. of freezy kids stuff, 
2oz. oil, some kind of leak suppressant and Maxi Cool enhancement (snake 
oil?). Anyhow the gauge supplied read 35-40 psi at max cool a/c on, in the blue 
zone, started out in the green zone ~ 20 psi.
Mr. Bell! Mr. Bell! it works!
Diesel content, now to reassemble the '84 190D a/c system. (groan)
Delete key is in the usual place.

[MBZ] OT Spade a Spade - it's a BMW thread

I haven't known many BMW owners, but three I can think of are my uncle
(has been restoring some really small old one for a long time now).
And my mother in law (bizarre to me - total prude evil wretch who has
one of those Z convertibles. Must be a late-mid-life crisis). And the
fiance of a friend of my wife's. He's an IBM engineer and is kind of
an arrogant guy for a geek.

So there are two out of three that fall in line with the general
opinion of the list.

The foam tube is shot.  Has anyone gone back in with vinyl or rubber?  I'd 
guess that it would last longer, unless foam is required.  The outside diameter 
of the tube is about 11/16, so 3/4 hose should work.  TIA all.

I never really thought about it, but it's possible
that they used foam so that the air being drawn over
the thermistor wouldn't get heated up while going
through the tube under a hot dashboard.

Actually, the reason is so no blower motor noise will be transmitted to 
the dash.  I cant really hear much difference though.

Tested this theory on the parts car, one swift hit with the heel of my hand on 
the side and it popped loose.  No such luck on the Coupe.  I had to wedge a 3/8 
flat head screwdriver under one side of it and hammer on it to break the mirror 
loose.  That's when I found that the screws were 3-4 full turns loose.  That 
should fix the vibration.

Guy I work with recently sold his 70's BMW coupe.  Not sure exactly
which model it was -- I do know it was in the shop almost as much as
on the road.  He loved the car, but the maintenance was eating him
alive (he's not the DIY type when it comes to car repair).

i've never experienced higher than 107.  it was a dry heat too.  it was very
unpleasant, but still no more so than 90 in georgia.

the coldest i ever experienced was -17F, also in a humid climate.  i had to
get the car started and probably spent about 15 minutes working outside in
that weather.  i don't get how people live in 40 below.

60 is a good temperature.  winter here is perhaps my favorite season.  no
bugs, but still gets warm enough during the day

[MBZ] Moly Lube Tranny Fluid

When I got the seller of my 190D to come address some of the issues
(fortunately, he left his cel phone in my car) he brought with him a
quart of Moly Lube tranny fluid. The bottle says it's mineral based.
And it says that it meets MB specs, though these specs have numbers
after them that I do not understand.

Is this stuff good to mix in with regular old ATF?

Yes, I know I should drain and replace with Mobil 1, but in the meantime...

Me, I replaced the thermistor with a resistor. Thus the dash
knob is no longer a thermostat control, but a heat level control.

But then I like the old two-knob (240 style) heater controls.

Nope.

But I know of the ice roads and the drivers that haul freight.
It's rather ironic that the _winter_ is the only suitable time
to haul freight. In most places the transportation work is done
when the weather is fairest - up there they work only when the
weather is the coldest!

And I rarely have to worry about the road swallowing my truck...
