Unless you are doing TIG brazing! ;)

I have been using the silicon-bronze rod with the TIG welder for almost
everthing these days, it gives you all the precision of TIG with even
less heat into the workpiece and it is more forgiving of dirty metal
(vs. regular TIG)

If you do it right it is a true braze in that the filler sits on the
metal rather than melting into it, but interestingly enough you can
turn up the heat and it will mix with the steel like regular filler
rod. I hove no idea of the strength implications though...

It is the best thing in the world for TIG'ing on old dirty car metal!

If it has been brazed, it can no longer be welded. The brass

would manage about 120 miles per pigs ear. :-) We tried the front seat a
number of times, but she could constantly turn around, trying to get
comfortable, and each time she did, she would knock the car out of hear! hee

on the floor to take advantage of whatever food you left on your plate. :-)
She loved her tummy! :-) I do miss her as do the cats. Maybe another one

Federal law has some nasty fine for venting refrigerant, even R134A.
The funny thing is, the feds allow R134A to be sold in 12oz spray cans
for blowing dust off stuff when you're too lazy to fire up a vacuum.
I fail to see how the stuff becomes too dangerous to vent just because
it has been mixed with PAG oil.

High end bike frames were always made from drawn, butted tubes of chrome moly
or chrome manganese alloys, brazed into lugs at the joints, or on the very
best frames, lugless brazed. Then in the early 1980s Reynolds came out with
their super strong 753 tubing, which they insisted must be silver soldered.
Perhaps this tubing was heat treated as your book mentions?
Since then everything evolved into composites or MIG/TIG weldable metal
alloys, and I doubt you will find hand brazed frames except from a few
small custom framebuilders. At any rate, it sounds like the broken
frame we're talking about has a broken dropout, not a weld failure.

Do you have a URL for that story? My wife has had seizures and we got the
particular GSD we now have because her grandfather is an outstanding
seizure alert dog (warning typically 20 minutes before a seizure,
sometimes 45 minutes).

My wife is also a diabetic and it would be a great help if Ori would let

body and a rusted trunk floor, but I decided to sell it before even trying a
valve adjustment to see if it was due to the intake valves being too tight.
It didn't have any funky noises in the engine, so I could have had a runner.
I later bought the wrenches, the best investment i've made yet.

I haven't followed the thread, but on a W123 with a diesel

extension and a swivel end sure help.

I have a 2ft long extension with a 30 deg or so swivel at the

I must give this guy credit since he is brutally honest! I wonder when the
last valve adjustment was done on that thing?

Speaking of 220D's, there's a '72 220D for sale here in Portland. The guy
got it in a package deal along with a '75 240D and a '79 300SD. He says
that the 'SD started after it was "jumpered," and the other two turned over
(probably didn't start since they have pull knobs for starting/fuel rack
control). The guy wants $650, nice straight body with pearl white paint and

new tires. It even has a manual sunroof which is appealing to me. I figure

that it's definitely worth checking out since I've been lusting after Gump.
Auto or manual really doesn't matter although the manual may end up with a
bug or two less on the rear window. This one will most likely be a fun get
around town car and a classic old timer too.

Interesting about the footwell. She has always liked it there, but she is on

I am endlessly amazed by what dogs can be trained to do...and working dogs in
general. We got our 2 GSDs after being robbed of everything worth robbing
(except the cars). They are very good watch dogs/intimidators/deterants. I did
not realize how much a part of the family they would become. We all love them
to death and they are very good with the kids (5 of them aged 7 to 1...or is it
2 now?). We teach the kids how to interact with the dogs, how to read the dog's
body language, what NOT to do (pull tails, etc) and the dogs do their part by
being pretty forgiving of being stepped on, ears pulled, teeth examined by
junior "dentists", etc.

Say hello to Joel for me. I'm sure Sammy and Anke send their
butt-sniffing/greetings as well. :-)

About the only way you can do it is by getting the car

[MBZ] 300SD Vac Hose [was] Re: Dogs in cars

2007-07-25 Thread Kevin Kraly
Now you know why Kevin had more than the usual trouble
finding a vacuum hose that got knocked loose on his 300SD.

Mitch.

Believe it or not, I don't know which one of us, me or my dad, has the best
chance of finding the hose and getting it connected properly again! The car
is out at his place, so he's got full access to it (OH NO!). He's taught me
a lot over the years, but the learning curve has gone the other way with
these Mercedes'. If anyone has the schematic for the vac system on an '83
300SD, it would be GREATLY appreciated! While I was feeling around under
there, I've found lots of lines capped off, and, if possible, I would like
to make things right again.

Re: [MBZ] Dogs in cars [was: Re: OT: Saab 900 Clutch]

2007-07-25 Thread Kevin Kraly
Hi, Chris.

Joel is a seeing eye dog, or Guide Dog since he came from Guide Dogs for
the Blind. I've also heard of many dogs that seem to have a natural ability
to detect low blood sugar in their owners. Some dogs can tune in to their
owner's needs before the owner even realizes it. For example, One of my
classmates was feeling tired and woozy, and she wanted to stop and rest for
a minute. Just then, the dog pulled her to the side of the walkway where
there just happened to be a park bench.

You mentioned that your GSD Anke likes to lie in front of the passengers
seat. This is how guide dogs are trained to ride in cars although some dogs
like Joel are too uncomfortable to ride in the passenger's footwell. It
does work for short trips when all of the car' seats are occupied by HUMAN
passengers.

Interesting, a quick google search agrees with you.
The welding book I own says brazing is no good for 4130.
More searching seems to say as long as the 4130 isn't heat treated you'll be
okay. That said it appears alot of the 4130 used now is heat treated...

A LOT of bikes are brazed 4130

I am pretty sure brazing CroMo was common "back in the day" for race
cars and aircraft..

If you do that, enough times to feel you have close to 100% water in
the system, you would want to drain it one more time, add pure
undiluted coolant in the amount of 1/2 the system capacity, then top
up to full with water.

If you are adding a 50% coolant mix and there's already water in the
system, you will end up with too weak a mix.

You know, I bet cracking open the block plug could be quite difficult
(read too hardcore for my blood).

How about draining via the radiator petcock (I have waited to use that
word). And then, when ready, fill with plain water and run for a
while, then drain. Then perhaps repeat until you feel you have gotten
all the old coolant out. Then when you add your 50% mix, factor in the
straight water that is remaining in the block?

Just came up with this.

The Mercedes lug nut spec is virtually the same for a clean dry lug and
a lubricated one. The bulk of the friction is on the seat and NOT the
threads. Mercedes allows anti-seize on the threads but NOT on the seat.
Thats why I use paraffin wax.

Ernest I bought a SUN recovery/recharging unit off ebay years ago. When
doing one of the cars with R12 I connect the unit, suck all the existing
Freon out and let it pull a vacuum, takes about an hour. As long as there
aren't any leaks I refill it with Freeze 12. The Freeze 12 stuff seems to
work fine. I need to find a similar recycle machine for R134 so I can do
some work on the 600SEL A/C system - the compressor is making noise.

You can get a licence to legally purchase it; it's trivial, an short
open book "test" I think. There are also R12 replacements,
e.g. Freeze12, AutoFrost. If you google those you'll probably find
others as well. They have pros and cons. You do have to evacuate the
R12 to use those I think, but not convert the oil etc.

Re: [MBZ] Low Coolant Temperature Implications

2007-07-25 Thread David Bruckmann
IIRC, on a 617 opening the rad drain will not drain the block below the water
pump. You'll get about 2/3 of the coolant out if you don't open the block
drain. OTOH, getting to the block drain can be a royal PITA. Measure what comes
out the rad drain and you'll know how much is left in the system for
flushing/mixing purposes.

In my old Toyota truck, roughly 40% of the coolant was in the block
and would need to be drained by removing a plug in the block.
Draining the radiator alone would not accomplish this. The old M180
in my W110 has a similar plug in the block. Was not sure about the
OM617.

Electrical system.

My 90 Saab 900s made Lucas look like the beacon of light. The main junction
block, melted down one-was jury rigged. When the wires going into the block
got funky again I sold it. I am sorry I didn't have new block and relays and
some wiring put in as it was a great car.
But offer them 450 just for the hell of it.

I know theres something up with the clutch, the headliner is sagging and the

I've gotten G-05 at Carquest and seen it at Autozone. Its not all that
uncommon., probably won't see it at Wal-mart though.

I would expect where your area is somewhat of a haven for older european cars
it'd be easy enough to find.
I put it in a snowmobile last spring. Now that sled doesn't start at all
Not saying its related, just that I hate coolant work. On that job I learned
about the bolt in the head that releases the air bubble trapped there.
I found it after I overheated the sled.
On my wife's motorcycle I found that its VERY easy to crossthread the drainplug
and break it. Then I found its really easy to break the casing when you take it
apart.

Hey Zach,

You are so right. The tube accepts a rectangular bracket, and it
appears that the break is in the bracket.

Brazing doesn't sound very strong. So I guess it broke before and
someone brazed it. I did put in maybe a year or so of hard use on the
bike and it held. I have been learning that the point of breakage is
one of the highest stressed areas of the frame. Amazing that it held.

Seems like a poor design in the first place.

Re: [MBZ] OT Welding Bicycle CroMoly Frames

2007-07-25 Thread Zach

Brazing is actually extremely strong, as strong or stronger than
welding with the advantage of a lower temperature during construction.
but like everything else a lot of the strength lies in the joint
design.

I will still be happy to take a crack at it! :)

Funny - I'm sure more than a few people go into the "yo quiero"
routine when they see your chiuahuas. In a parking lot the other night
I saw a pug climb over a bunch of stuff to make his way back to the

Actually my Dobie often rests his head on the top of the rear seat
back and just looks back. I'm sure that's pretty cute to see.

lexington, va remains one of my favorite places and happens to be between

it has lost much of it's redneck character over the years and seems a bit

I think that's the way I'll attempt to dispose of it too.

Right now I believe the car has the green stuff in it. Time to see who
carries G05 or 6 or whatever around here.

Re: [MBZ] OT: looking at a ___

2007-07-25 Thread Redghost
It may depend on who drives the car. I see a large population of 3/5
series BMW at the PNP with no body damage or nasty interior. Seems
to be some other issue has caused the car to end up there.

Re: [MBZ] OT Welding Bicycle CroMoly Frames

2007-07-25 Thread Zoltan Finks

This may be true of other states, but if you get into Va on the Bue Ridge
PW, check with some of the state parks as they offer beautiful cottages deep
in the forests - some by themselves - with no phones, TV, etc. Some have
outside bathrooms,..err... make that toilet -

Re: [MBZ] Low Coolant Temperature Implications

2007-07-25 Thread LarryT
I've never bothered with block drains and such - there should be a large
plastic drain plug in the lower front corner of the radiator - remove that
and 99% of the coolant will rush out.

When you remove the water pump there might be a small bit more coolant but
not much (no more than a couple of ounces) you can then remove the old
t'stat and dry the area with paper towels to get ready to install the new
pump.

That's how I did it last year on my 91 300D 2.5T (W124) which is similar to
your engine I believe.

Good luck -

i don't like leaving the country. in fact, there are very few places i
actually travel to

1. blue ridge mountain area. home of mountains and lakes and rivers and
drew the wood guy will make lunch when you get back. pigeon forge very
family friendly.
2. rockland county, new york. cheap lodging still available, yet within
easy distance of both NYC and catskills. stone's throw from montvale, nj

3. hollywood beach, florida. home of thomas youngman and my mom. once
pretty run down, the place has made a comeback in recent years, yet still
more budget minded than trendy. beachside parking not difficult to find
outside of peak tourist season.

these place plus whatever you pass getting to them from atlanta is all the
world travel i'm interested in. pretty cosmopolitan, huh?

[MBZ] OT: '91 Saab 900

2007-07-25 Thread Curt Raymond
So tomorrow I'm going to look at the '91 Saab 900. I'm going to try to Kaleb
the price which shouldn't be too hard considering he's asking $600.
I know theres something up with the clutch, the headliner is sagging and the
seats need covers. Anything else I should look for?

Is there one place to open up that will drain everything -- radiator,
block, heater core? When I've done this job on other cars I've had to
remove plugs in the block to get the block drained, etc. then the
coolant tends to splash around and get all over the floor. It's just
a really messy job in my experience.

I have used the Prestone back-flush kit (not on an MB though) and
that was pretty convenient, assuming you have a floor drain or large
container to catch all the flushed-out liquid.

other one (weighs all of 2.5#s) likes to ride in on the rear hat shelf - I
don't let her stay for long since it's dangerous, but sometimes she sits
back there while we're in the neighborhood - it's hilarious to watch her
lean into the turns. Also, I'm sure some people have mistaken her for one
of those head-bobing toys that sit on the hat shelf - until she moves and
surprises them.

Yes, while both of my Golden Retrievers love to ride in the back seta of the
240D, my older golden, sleeps on the seat with his chin on eh armrest
exactly as you describe. The younger one sits at alert in the back seat.
When parked downtown, they both rest their chins on the back of the rear
seat, looking out the back window. (Which is covered with bugs being a 240D)

How funny that your dog does this too! Joel doesn't do this in the 300SD.
Perhaps the angle is different due to the height of the armrest above the
seat. I guess I'll have to buy another W123 to compare.:-)

2007-07-25 Thread andrew strasfogel
It is a VERY easy job - you don't even need a lift. Tools required are a
large flat bladed screwdriver and a drain pan.

After you refill the mixture of MB coolant and tap water, you will need to
drive around to get the air bubbles out of the system. Then stop and
release the radiator or tank cap, let the car sit awhile, and top off with
the proper mixture. Might have to do this twice to get the system
completely refilled.

way to dispose of the old coolant -- we're on a septic system and

Yup and yup.
When I first got my 190D ("Its perfect, drive it home!") the temp wouldn't come
above 40C. New thermostat fixed that.

I'm debating if I change the coolant myself this weekend or save it for my Indy
to do in early August. I have bad luck with changing coolant, seems like every

Okay, on the 190D, the temperature stays around 60 unless it's hot
outside and I'm driving sort of rigorously.

I think that the optimal temperature is 80, yes?

So is an incorrect thermostat in there?

And could this cause less than optimal fuel mileage?

Not right.

A little above, yes.

> So is an incorrect thermostat in there?

Possibly. Or it has just fatigued with age and isn't closing
right. There are other possibilities, such as a sender problem.
I like to confirm the head temperature with an IR thermometer
before changing thermostats, but if you don't have such you
can just go ahead and try a new one. That's where to start.

Keep in mind that there is a fair incidence of thermostat
failure right out of the box, so be on the lookout for
that. Just because it's new doesn't mean it's good!

Re: [MBZ] windshield misting over after A/C shutdown ('85 300D)

2007-07-25 Thread Trampas
Well most likely when you shut the A/C off the vents are switching to the
defrost mode due to a leak in one of the actuators. Thus the cold air hits
the windshield causing the condensation. The condensation will most likely
be on the outside of windshield and removed with wipers.

(first; no "ernie" here,... ;-) )

i'm familiar with the conditions that lead to condensation; in case
i wasn't clear enough earlier, we're talking a relatively new occurrence
in this car that goes far beyond mere normal condensation. the buildup
is enough that you can't see through it, until you've given it enough
time and air circulation that the buildup is allowed to evaporate, or
you turn the A/C back on...!?

probably supposed to flex to absorb pulsations, about 5/16" hex if I
recall.
You might google that topic and see if it's a problem.

I would suggest a nice synthetic 0W-30, as opposed to a 50 weight racing
oil.

Good luck,
