Everything manufactured has a MTBF rating & the rating stands for Mean Time
Between Failure or the expected point at which 1/2 of the units have failed.
I'd expect the 12 year water heater to be manufactured differently since
it's life expectancy is so much different from the 3 & 5 year units. It also
does not surprise me that the 3 & 5 year units are built the same and they
probably have the same MTBF. And the real difference between the two? The
warrantee - my point earlier.

As far as the 6 month failure is concerned - all manufactured goods have
some early life failure & that water heater was likely a classic example.

Failures follow a predictable curve called a bathtub curve. You will have
some failures right away, followed by a period of low, random failures. Then
the failures will increase & may level out again at a higher rate or may
continue to climb. Somewhere after this initial climb is the MTBF point.

Some items like light bulbs follow a very predictable curve. Take a 1000
hour light bulb, for example. You'll have a few fail early on, much fewer
fail over time but then when your 1000 hour light bulbs start reaching 1000
hours, they start dropping out fast.

Other seemingly simple items like your Mercedes alternator are really made
of components, each with its own MTBF rating. The front bearing, rear
bearing, regulator, rotor, stator & diode block each have their own MTBF.
I've had a couple of Mercedes alternators rebuilt by a local shop, only to
have a front or rear bearing fail later. Why? Because the shop only repaired
what was broken, the diode block and / or regulator. But the bearings were
not replaced even though they were well into their service life and they
reached their end of life & failed.

Ya, consumer reports sawed a bunch in half a year back or so.
They said the 12 year ones were seriously different inside.
Better quality, better durability, better engineering.  In fact price  
versus what you got was way better.

But I do recall they said the  3 versus the 5 year ones were the same.

This did not stop my 12 year GE one from leaking in the first six  
months.
On the other hand they replaced it at no costs for anything that

Good info, I am corrected.  My experience was of some years ago, working 
with some manufacturers -- they just "sold" a longer warranty on the 
same unit, gaming on how long they would last.  I guess they are either 
smarter now, or more competitive.  Good info to know.

My experience with dishwashers some years ago was that the $500 
KitchenAid had exactly the same guts as the $200 special, except the 
timer had more bumps on it to activate more cycles.  All built in the 
same factory of mostly the same bits. All lasted about the same time 
too.  Not sure now.

FWIW my 95 Mazda B2300 (Ford Ranger) has always had a whiny PS pump.

The car still does not bottom out or bang down after going over a speed  hump 
at 30  MPH!
I still have the lower ball joints too,  The upper control arm is the  one 
that goes bad.  The bushings go bad and you get inside tire wear as the  top of 
the tire leans in.  the new upper control arms come with bushings  and it is 
not too bad a job as you do not have to fight the spring.the stabilizer bar 
on the 116 connects to the upper control arm and is a little  tricky to line 
up--not sure on your car.
 
by the way., my 74 240D went over 200,000 miles before a rear shock  started 
leaking.

[MBZ] Front Loading Washers (was Re: Tools and Quality)

I just cut about 35% off my water bill by going to a front
loading washing machine last month.

What brand/model did you go with?  I'll be in the market for one very soon 
since we're buying a house.  My parents have a Maytag Neptune that seems to 
be working well for the past 5 years.  The laundromat here at the apartment 
complex just installed new Maytag commercial HE front loaders that don't 
seem to be getting clothes too clean at all.  I think that our cheap top 
loader did a better job.

Rusty has Bilstein comfort or HD for $68.10, No sales tax (unless you live  
in his state) and free shipping.  My recommendation is for comfort  Bilsteins, 
a year after you put in KYB's  your ride has  deteriorated!.  My 79 still has 
the original Bilsteins and recently  performed very well at Starfest, 06.  
Another thing, the Bilsteins come  with a lifetime guarantee to the purchaser, 
(as do the KYBs) but unless one  leaks, it is unlikely you will need to replace 
them.  Why change what  works?

Actually they pointed out the insulation was better on the 12 year  
ones, thus decreasing the
carbon footprint.

rather loudly. It seem to work fine, and isn't leaking fluid. The
truck only has 48k miles.
A local McParts has two rebuilt pumps - ATSCO and Beck-Arney. Might
either of them be any good?

Yes, those were the early AMG wheels I had in mind.  I have an old AMG
catalog that features these for both 123, adn 126 models.

I believe the Bundt were also refered to as turbine wheels as they somewhat
resemble the compression fan on a jet engine.

Thanks for your help, and the pics.  As they say, a pic really is worth a
thousand words. :-)

I guess I look at the difference in cost amortized
over the life of the appliance.  That being
considered, you're talking about less than $10/year
for the difference, which isn't really significant in
my mind.

That also doesn't factor in the cost savings in energy
efficiency.  While I can't imagine water heater
technology has gotten to the point of really major
gains in efficiency over the last 10 years, with other
appliances it is definitely a consideration.

The house is just about 10-1/2 years old, so some of
the appliances are ready to be turned.  I just cut
about 35% off my water bill by going to a front
loading washing machine last month.  I can't begin to
imagine what a difference it will make when we replace

I wonder which Bilstein shocks Rusty sends if you don't specify comfort or 
heavy duty?  I replaced the rear shocks (from Rusty) on the '83 240D and it 
seems to ride a "lot" rougher than the '83 300D.  Do 240Ds "usually" ride 
rougher than 300Ds?  The 240D was my wifes car and I've driven it very 
little so I don't remember if it rode as rough when I occasionally drove her 
someplace.

Bill,
  It needs a tranny, exhaust and bumpers.  Other than that it drives nice,
brakes are good, runs great, hydro susp. works.  I only drove it for a
week and the tranny went on me.  Has some cancer but not too bad.  Fuel
tank needs cleaned out or better yet replaced as it is clogging the fuel
filter.  That's about what i know about it.

the close of the first half when *Krista Davey* sent a cross into the box
and *Christine Latham* finished a diving header to even the score in the
44th minute.
 Atlanta did not let the halftime break slow their offensive attacks
and the Silverbacks took the lead in the 46th minute when *Monica Buff* laid
the ball back to *Tara Minnax* who finished the go-ahead goal. Buff finished
a goal of her in the 68th minute when she sent in a 35-yard shot that proved
too much for the keeper to handle. The Silverbacks finished their final goal
of the night in the 80th minute when Minnax chipped the ball into *Sarah
Steinmann* who easily laid the ball in from inside the 18-yard box.
The Silverbacks launched their W-League franchise just three years
ago - the team made its postseason debut last weekend in Minnesota and has
dominated every match along the way, outscoring their opponents 13-3. The
Silverbacks will fight for the W-League title on Sunday afternoon at PAETEC

last weekend, I would beg to differ with you on
that

Yes, the warranty does work out to about $10/year as
you move up the scale, however, there are also
differences in construction and components as well.

For instance, the 6 year warranty heater I considered
had plain copper elements.  The 12 year warranty
heater ($70 more) had stainless steel.  It also had a
solid state controller that monitors usage and
"learns" the usage patterns, using them to turn down
the heater when there is no demand expected (like in
the middle of the night.)

I have no idea what the value of the additional items
is from a manufacturing standpoint, suffice to say
that they are probably worth the difference.

2.) Comfort.  Heavy duty are valved very, very hard,
and you'll feel every little pebble in the road with
them.  If you want a "luxury car" feel to your MB,
you'll get it with the comforts.  Heavy dutys make you
feel like you're offroading in the parking lot.

Very odd that it's got four different colors of paint on
its various bits.  What a hodge-podge.  Still, if paint were
in your future that wouldn't be bad.  Looks like it's missing
the fog lights.

But I've got mine already.  Feel free to get yours too!
I drove mine to work today, it runs pretty well.  Needs a
lot of fiddly stuff, though.  At least the cuffs match the
collar!

Washed, it's still fairly shiny.  My wife parked next to
it today at lunch, and complemented me on my "good deal".
Hoo-hah!  Let me write that down...

She thinks the overall paint effect is better than the 450.
Though this one has many more flaws, the rust 'bulletholes'
in the 450's trunk lid were weighted high in her book.

A lot of tools have a lifetime warranty, but most don't realize how these
work. When a company sets up a warranty, they factor the cost of
replacements, plus additional profit. They add additional profit because
like it or not, the company will make money on the warranty. And because of
this, a tool or piece of equipment with a long term warranty costs more than
the exact same quality tool with a lesser warrantee & the cost difference is
not justified by just the warranty.

Sears, for example, offered & still offers a lifetime warranty on their
Craftsman line. But the warranty does not indicate that their product is any
better than anyone else's tools. The warranty just states that they will
replace the tool when / if it breaks. And if you compare the price of
Craftsman tools to other name brands, it soon becomes apparent that you are
paying a lot for the name, and for the warranty.

That said, I own a lot of Craftsman tools but I've also broken a lot of
Craftsman tools. But I also have a set of no name wrenches that refuse to
die.

If I were to buy my tools all over again, I'd buy the Kolbalt line offered
by Lowes. They also happen to offer a lifetime warranty but I'd buy them for
the finish.

Ed,

These are bundt pan wheels. Like the 14" variants that came with the 
w123, late w116, and early w126. I do not know what you mean by the 
turbine fan variant.

WRT AMG wheels, the early pentas were made by ATS and later on they 
switched to Ronal. Ronal and ATS both did offer an "aftermarket" 
variant. If the wheel has AMG stamped into the hub, then it was a 
genuine piece. If it just has the Ronal or ATS mark with no AMG, then 
it was an aftermarket. FWIW, other manufacturers sold knock-off AMG 
wheels as well.

[MBZ] Tools and Quality

Howdy -- 
We talked about this issue a week or so ago - we basically said "you get 
what you pay for"  - I got a surprise recently.  I bought a 3 draw unit for 
my toolchest that fits between the top box and bottom box - btw, I highly 
recommend this method of adding more space.  It is very handy and doesn't 
require anymore footprint.  Anyway, the original toolchest is one I bought 
in 1968 from Montgomery Wards when I worked as a VW/Porsche mechanics 
apprentice way back then -- the new 3 drawer unit is Craftsman -- and the 
quality is much lower on the Craftsman part.  So far, I have noticed the 
drawer slides being cranky on the Sears piece - the drawer must be lined up 
perfectly to go into the housing.  Also, the finish is not as good as the 
almost 40 years old tool chest.

Oh well, in the overall scheme of things it's not a big deal.

receiver/drier (but I'd recommend a new one)
Condenser

evaporator with expansion valve
Control with knob
And a few related bits

Hmm...  I haven't seen many of those here at the moment, though there are
some over at my parents house, they drive a John Deere Gator back and forth
to the farm(they do live in the country).

I'm guessing there may be a few more down in Houston than up here in NY...

I wonder what ever happened to the days when if a garage wanted your
business they would come tow the car(within a few miles) to the shop at no
charge.  Labor rates have gone up, pay hasn't much, for the mechanic not
the boss...

might figure out that I've already registered the car before and not let
that one fly...  And I suppose if I have to pay $10, it's not THAT much
worse to pay $46 or whatever just for the ease of dealing with it,
especially for probably more than 30 days...
