If it provides a seal to the shaft, couldn't a person seal it to the shaft and
provide more service? Use some adhesive or silicone. Jim??

i dunno' nuttin' 'bout Mike Vick, but you're probably right that our own
dawgs aint' likely to be bitin' on us (most of the time). it aint' them
bitin' us you gots to worry 'bouts... unless of course, you can afford
to loose everything you have because Bowser took a chunk out of some
dipsh*t kid that behaved stupidly (or worse) around it; then you're out
no matter whether the kid was in the wrong or not.
sucky as it may be, welcome to our litigious world. it won't cost
you more than a phone call to talk to your insurance company; it could
cost you *everything* not to. best case, you might find out that your
insurance company is exceptional and you have nothing to worry about,
but wouldn't you rather know that beforehand, than wonder about it after
some brat sticks his hand down Bowsers throat and his daddy's lawyer's
on the phone?

many feel they kind of missed the mark with the quality when they got into
the 996, Box era, and I'm one of them. Saved the company, brought in a lot
of new customers, and money, so it all went according to plan. I know I
wouldn't want one of those cars. One models I like now are the Carrera GT
and the GT3. No interest in owning a CGT, like that would happen anyway,
but glad they built it, if for no other reason than the remind ppl, you can
still build an exotic super car with a stick shift, and not those stupid
paddle flipper things.

I was a loyal customers when the company was going bust, so not sure my
input really counts for much to them. :-)

Re: [MBZ] What was the last real Mercedes?

2007-11-13 Thread Loren Faeth
My vote is for the 126 in big cars, and the 124 in the
mid-range. Never owned a 201, so I can't comment on them. My vote
for the best car in the world, ever, is the 300SDL. If my memory is
correct, the 126 was the last of the hand-touched bodies, as opposed
to the robotic, untouched bodies.

140s seem to have no soul.

Re: [MBZ] famous dave's bbq

2007-11-13 Thread Robert Rentfro
Spare ribs are the traditional slab of ribs. They come from the belly of the
pig, behind the shoulder. They include 11 to 13 long bones. There is a
covering of meat on top of the bones and between them. They are the most
inexpensive cut of ribs. St. Louis style ribs are a variation of the full
slab. They are trimmed and have the brisket bone removed. Kansas City style
ribs are another variation. They are trimmed even more than the St. Louis
style ribs and have the hard bone removed.

i have no idea what differentiates a st louis rib from a kansas city rib.
the ribs i had were large, meaty with a nicely spicy wet sauce.

I prefer a 1" wide (25mm) putty knife to tap in around the edges of

it's less likely to do damage to the mating surfaces.

I put Allen stubs into a six-point box-end wrench for tough cases.
In a pinch, a heavy cold chisel and BFH can also work for the
fill plugs.

I have also noticed that the oblong ones, as used in

[MBZ] Rear Axle Fluid Change

2007-11-13 Thread LarryT
Tried to have a local shop replace my rear axle fluid recently. His allen
wrench would not clear the other stuff around the rear axle and engage the
socket properly. So I drive there with my tools and we tried mine - but the
only one I had in a 14mmm IIRC was a standard L wrench.

Has anyone tried to remove the fill plug on a 91 300D 2.5?Would really
like to put the Mobil 1 Synthetic I have in the axle -

Any ideas about what kind of Allen Wrench *will work? Maybe a 14mm stub of
allen into a socket with a universal?

Bill:

Interesting your vac pump and mine failed at exactly the same milage.
Sorry to hear your heater stuff ain't working better--mine cleared
right up.

My trans shifts exactly the same now as it did before the pump
replacement, incidently. Not sure whether the shop recalibrated it or
not--they didn't mention doing so.

I have had the trans shift hard after a trans service, but that time
the shop inadvertantly disconnected a vacuum line entirely. Perhaps
the same thing happened to yours.

Good luck!

Re: [MBZ] Quality & bugs

2007-11-13 Thread Curt Raymond

Interesting, my badly abused 190D (oh the abuse heaped upon it by the PO) has
served me admirably. I drive it 110 miles a day and it asks very little.

This week it'll be in for an alignment to see if that'll clear up the squirrely
handling. The last time I took it to my Indy he said there was nothing wrong
with the suspension... If the alignment doesn't help I'll have him give it a
more indepth look...

Oh and I need snow tires, it'll be snowy soon enough. And I need to change the
coolant... But even if I don't do those things it'll chug right along...

This post seems to suggest that the 201 was over-engineered (what
 exactly
does that mean, anyway?) and had exceptional quality.

The car itself was OK. It was just all the mechanical bits that were
 inside
it that failed on a regular schedule. You name it, it failed. The '85
 190E was
the hands down worst car I ever owned.

Define quality, if you please.

Re: [MBZ] Fw: What was the last real Mercedes?

2007-11-13 Thread Rich Thomas
Yes, correct, it is a non-blinking blinker light. It just stays on (or
off, depending on failure mode) when the blinker fluid runs low and no
longer provides proper lubrication, the blinker seizes up. I have found
that German synthetic provides much better service, but it is hard to find.

[MBZ] Repair of leaking door actuator

2007-11-13 Thread Craig McCluskey
In the recent discussions of leaking vacuum door lock systems, Larry said,

> You probably have a bad element somewhere - the rubber diaphragms are
> damaged moe often than the rubber or plastic hoses. The element
> diaphrams get torn and leak.

In my experience, however, it's not the diaphragms inside the actuator
that leak, but the "cover" that seals the actuating shaft to the plastic
body of the actuator. In this case, the leak is when you try to open the
doors.

I've attached photographs of tonight's repair of my second broken W123
door actuator (I now have a spare).

Photograph 1 shows a failed door actuator with a failed attempt at
repairing with a plastic sandwich bag.

Photograph 2 shows the bag of Bosch parts used for the repair (one for
each actuator). The Bosch part number is 3 340 522 025. These are
available online from Rock Auto (http://www.rockauto.com). Do a part
number search for that Bosch part number and you'll get a search result
that allows you to buy the item. They're $1.85 each and come in bags of 5.
I bought 3, so 2 were taken out before it was shipped. The shipping charge
is more than the part.

Photograph 3 shows the Bosch part. This was intended to seal an electrical
connection, with the wire coming out the small end.

Photograph 4 shows the repair in progress, with a pair of needle-nosed
pliers being used to hold the actuating shaft up so the seal can be forced
down over it.

Photograph 5 shows the finished repair and now functional door actuator.
The seal is a little longer than needed but seems to work just fine.

Re: [MBZ] VAC LEAKS

2007-11-13 Thread Bill
Interesting. What kind of circumference would such a pump have? Is it
inserted through the pipe or is a larger diameter hole dug with pump and
pipes dropped through that? What sort of current would such a pump require?
I doubt if we are in such a dome because we are at the top of a hill that
drops down to almost river level on all four sides within a mile or less.
We certainly do have some hardpan in FL. When I dug a drain field for a
bath I was installing in Lakeland [near Tampa] the 'uphill' end of the
trench had water in it, and I was able to get to less than 1/2 inch [very
carefully] of connecting the trenches with no seepage at all. Percolation
rate through that stuff was almost nil. To use a spike stand sprinkler I had
to take a hammer and screwdriver and pound a hole in the stuff and stand the
sprinkler up in it. Fortunately it was only in a small part of the yard,
but I had to extend the drain field another 10 feet to get past the hard pan
so the thing would work. In my next life I plan to be rich enough to have
the entire job done by the pros and not just the tank. I was fresh out of
school then and the only option was sweat equity.

topside pressure. I've heard of people using "booster" pumps topside if the

well is pretty deep since it takes part of the load off the submersible and
can provide a better flow of water and higher pressure for the house and
sprinkler system.
Another possibility I can think of is that the well diggers went through
hardpan into a "pressure dome" and the water level came up the pipe to where

a surface pump could be used. We had that happen when we hand drove a
couple of wells in the Tampa area when we first came to Florida.
Nevertheless, that seems unlikely given the low water levels both
underground and above ground nowadays.

There "could" be a smaller jet pipe inside a larger "return" pipe. This
would look like a simple pump system but could actually be a jet pump.

Re: [MBZ] Fw: What was the last real Mercedes?

2007-11-13 Thread R A Bennell
I never actually did it but I had intentions at one time to put a big red light
on the dash of my old Suburban to
warn of oil pressure troubles. I bought (and still have somewhere no doubt) a
round side marker type light intended
for a trailer or something like that. It was about 2 inches in diameter. I
thought if that was in front of me, I
should notice it light up even in daylight.

What I would like in my W123 is a buzzer if the oil pressure got too
low or the temp got too high. The gauges are nice but not very
attention-grabbing if something is going awry.

Re: [MBZ] replacing water pump

2007-11-13 Thread LarryT
If you use this method make sure you have the edge of the screwdriver on
the pump and not the engine block. Damage the pump and it doesn't matter -
damage the block and you have problems. The mating surface must be flat
so it meets the water pump and seals with the gasket.

I like the BFH (or LFH) method better - remove all the bolts & tap on
the Pump and it'll probably fall off. Maybe I've just been lucky but I
haven't seen the hardening Permatex in a long time.

It's really not a dfficult job - just get a gal of fresh antifreeze, a
gasket (Rusty may provide one) and study the Workshop Manual - especially
look at the work that must be done beforehand - sometimes the radiator needs
to be removed for easier access.

Good luck --

I bought it at a local newsstand in the 70's to early 80's, then didn't

this one looks like a cutey, and i'm all for rescuing dogs; our
Malinois/Lab mix was a rescue dog, and after some time to recover from
what was obviously an abusive start, she's become a wonderful critter to
have around the house (and the office, and pretty much anywhere else we go).
however, Brian raises an excellent point about the biting issue that
reminded me of something; you might want to check with your
homeowners/renters/business insurance to see if this dog might affect
your rates, because the list of breeds that Insurance companies are
classifying as High Risk would surprise most people, and it seems to be
growing longer all the time.

Andrew, I think you must be talking about when I wrote the breed is
one of the most likely to bite "though". Unless I'm missing something.

The ears: When it flops over the head like that it is often indicitive
of someone having taped the ears up at some point. Sometimes GSDs
don't need taping, sometimes they do. And sometimes owners tape the
ears just in case. Look at the middle of the ear and you can picture
it having been taped.

For a while (about 30 years ago) Honda put a loud turn signal buzzer
on some of their street bikes. Wise riders rewired the buzzer to run
off the oil pressure lamp circuit. Idiot lights on a motorcycle
can go unnoticed for a LONG time, especially on a sunny day.

I do recall hearing a report that some big-time financial guru (might

the prices were not justifiable based on current demand and supply and
that there would be a correction. That was some months ago, maybe

Re: [MBZ] VAC LEAKS

2007-11-13 Thread archer
I would guess a well drilled four years ago would have a submersible pump
lowered into the well. The pumps you describe may be auxiliaries to provide
topside pressure.

Nobody commented on her cockeyed ears (no pun intended). What does
this signify?

Also -Zoltan - what does it mean that a dog "bites through?" If it's
what I think then that's a real deal breaker in my book.

I subscribe to Mother Earth News. I really like it because it 1) is

Actually, Porsche was a struggling (and almost dead) company not too

I believe that the VIN for a MB destined for use outside of the US is
different. As such I don't know what the US type VIN will tell but I
know the normal VIN will tell what country the car was sold in
originally. This is handy to determine if a car is grey market or not.
This site will work for most VIN numbers

from the aerator into a pressurized tank for the house] it is a bit of a
maze - and mostly underground. The new well was dug about 4 years ago.
BillR

Bill may have a (jet?) pump with two pipes in the casing. Water is pumped
down one pipe and up the other pipe bringing additional water with it.
Those were common before submersible pumps were perfected. They were not
very efficient. I forget the physics involved. Venturi principle?

I use a screw driver sharpened to a knife edge and gently tap it into the
joint all around the water pump. If the pump has been "glued" in with
hardening permatex or something similar, you might have to do a "lot" of
tapping. I've never failed to get a pump loose that way.

Any idea what percentage of that will get taken by the German IRS?

It would be interesting also to know what percentage of that comes from

[MBZ] Carpet paint

2007-11-13 Thread Mitch Haley
>From a Saab mailing list I'm on:

We are in process of installing all "new" carpets in Project Lisa, the
1974 Sonett III that our club is refurbishing. The carpet pieces have
been selected as the best available from our several parts cars, but
most of the pieces do have varying amounts of color fading from sun
exposure here in Colorado.

Based on his prior experience with a carpet paint product, Bruce
Harbison suggested SEM Color Coat aerosol so we ended up doing a match
with #15173 Camel being the selected color. I sprayed two coats on all
the pieces today with very good results using the mfg suggested
process of nylon brushing the carpet after each coat. They look great
- very close to original color - and will be installed at our next
work party.

For those of you with fading carpets in your Sonett III go to
  for detailed information
about $15 for a 12 oz can, more that enough to do one car.

No, not exactly, just curious what country the car originally came from.
For instance, I do know my latest euro car, the 84 300D, came from Germany
because I found all the paperwork and letters back and forth from the person
who bought it here and the person in Germany who shipped it over. Also was
the german classifieds from whever they were looking for their car. Was
very interesting.

BT, WRONG! Methoxide is different. See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methoxide
Our substance is actually sodium/potassium hydroxide solution in
methanol/ethanol.

Glycerine that is made from NaOH will NOT breakdown on the compost pile.
Excessive amounts of Na is not good for your ecosystem.

NaOH will produce a soap that is more solid than KOH in the biodiesel reaction.
KOH is more forgiving if there is water in the oil or methanol/ethanol.

I am by no means a tire expert, but my faith in those tires would be
destroyed after that. You can have plenty of tread life left, but the
sidewalls could have problems, etc. Go to tirerack.com and read the
reviews for new tires... Tirerack also has pretty good prices as well.
I wouldn't buy a tire off eBay... what kind of warranty/service are you
going to get (ie you get a bad tire and need to return it)?

[MBZ] euro car question

2007-11-13 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin (CAT)
Is there a way to tell what country a euro car was originally sold in, or
produced for? Will the VIN number or something reveal that?

I'd replace the other rear as well, with that many miles already on
the tires. Do you have a full-size spare? If not you might consider
buying another wheel and using the current good rear tire as a spare.

If you change sizes, you'll need to change all the tires. I would not
change sizes, it will throw off your speedometer/odometer and could
affect handling adversely.

I just had a blow out on my rear tire of a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder. It has
the original tires with 45,000 miles. There is still a lot of tread left.
Should
I just replace the one tire? The original size is 245/65-17 How much bigger

Bill may have a (jet?) pump with two pipes in the casing. Water is pumped
down one pipe and up the other pipe bringing additional water with it.
Those were common before submersible pumps were perfected. They were not
very efficient. I forget the physics involved. Venturi principle?

The pump on my well [170 feet deep] is in the pump room behind my house, and
the well is out by the street. Unless there is some power source hidden in
the pipe I don't think it could have a pump at the bottom. We are located
54' above the river level, so the first 120' rise to ground water level
should be easy. Still have 50' or so to bring it up, and my long ago
physics said 32' was all vacuum would lift water. I believe they also went
on to explain how they did it, but by then I suspect I was daydreaming.

The usual well has a pump at the bottom. In any event,
water is pushed up, not sucked up.

Re: [MBZ] door check question

2007-11-13 Thread Tom Hargrave
All depends on how far the door check has cone but more often than not you
will be replacing the part.

Lubricate it with some spray lube, not WD-40. WD-40 is a solvent, not a
lubricant!

The passenger rear door on my 300D is getting hard to close. From
wide open, it gets "stuck" about halfway closed. Can this be fixed by
lubrication or do I need to replace the door check?

You can try lubrication, though getting a good grease
to where it needs to be will involve just as much work
as replacing it. But don't be surprised if it's too
late, those sliding-ball checks tend to fail spectacularly.

I have had very poor luck repairing these, the 'fix' just
doesn't last long. The leaf-spring roller jobs are much
better units, except that the pot metal is too thin and
they always break. I've never been able to repair one
of those, either.

The best door checks I've seen are found in the 107.
