All the Old Timers that I know and have learned from have a bias towards Lincoln. They refuse to even try an auto-darkening helmet - but all agree it is a good thing for us youngsters. When you are learning to weld, you will make mistakes. A common mistake is to strike an arc accidentally when lining up to start the weld. That can happen on Tig, Mig, or stick. The extra power output of the 180 is a big plus. I'm often wishing I had more power. That lets you use a larger wire which means you finish sooner and use less gas (depending on the task at hand). More power penetrates deeper allowing you to get a good weld on thicker materials. [MBZ] OT: Welding day
Several years ago, I bought a cheap Lincoln wire feed MiG with a kit to use gas cover. With it, I could do a serviceable weld in CLEAN sheet metal. I fixed the floors in my Met. Very ugly as welds were badly contaminated due to the floor having some type of rust preventative on it The big problem was that the duty cycle on the welder was about 20 seconds before it would go off on safety. I fooled to DMV inspector who wouldn't pass the very neat Pop Rivet job the P/O had done. I put the welder in a corner, anything I needed to weld for a few years I did at work with our TIG. 2 years ago I wanted to build a BBQ out of a 55 gal drum and a bunch of scrap angle iron. HInt: Old bed frames are very good raw stock! I trusted friend suggested that I loose the gas cover and use flux filled wire. His rationale: My machine couldn't melt .035 wire, it was too small capacity. .035 flux filled wire has much less metal to melt. I built my BBQ! Welds needed multiple passes and had to be chipped in between. They have good penetration and are functional. The BBQ has been used abused for several year, we've never lost a rack of ribs from poor welding! -- Regards, Peter T. I joined the list just in time to read you guys talking about the passing of this wonderful guy, a sage it seemed. I've gained admiration of him. SO... Change the fuses...? Here's what I discovered today (thx to Booth): I bought an '84 300D from a guy on Craigslist early summer. With my schedule I didn't have a chance to pick the car up until late September and just this past week have gotten a chance to fool with it. It's a nice clean lil 230K car. When I bought the car the guy, who has no exprience with MB, or diesel was apparently in a haste to part with it. I got it for a very cheap price (good faith on phone) and didn't see it until I actually picked it up. I did notice that the guy had bought sets of fog lamps and headlamps which were NIB in the trunk. Long story short, he apparently had tried to repair lights becoming frustrated that the fuses (which he finally located) checked out on the meter and the bulbs weren't burned out. It was the same with some other equipment. He decided to just sell the car at a loss and stick with his little late model gas Toyotas and Fords. Today with some time and a beautiful day I decided to tinker and heck, change the fuses (even though I too got continuity on the meter.) Guess what? In replacing all of the old fuses suddenly those items begin acting as intended. The right low beam and fog lights, the sunroof, etc.. Heck, I've got two spare yellow fogs and a new headlight spare for the price of a $0.20 fuse! Who would have thunk? So a believer now to change the fuse... especially that 80AMP GP relay before tearing into glow plugs. Re: [MBZ] no talent required, apparently
So the talents of the artists and the compositions were irrelevant, he thought? Crosby, Sinatra, Fitzgerald and all the rest just showed up for the money, then. RLE No, but the mastering is another piece of the puzzle. I've found that a lot of Sinatra's stuff is not as well recorded as Tony Bennett's although Tony likes a lot of reverb on his vocals and Frank's are usually almost dry. (no effects) Ella always had her Norman (Granz) to make things just so. Bing Crosby was very well recorded in the 40 onwards. He was a pioneer in the multitrack recording method as well as tape recording. Later he put the money up for Ampex to produce the first videotape! I recently bought a couple of old albums by Binger and they were phenomenally well recorded! I was impressed. OTOH, the first Zeppelin album has so much distortion in John Paul Jones' bass that it drives me mad. Levels were just way too high. [MBZ] Brain picking: Moving switches off lower part of 123 console
Hello folks I'm about to replace my fourway flasher switch in order to pass state inspection. That's if cleaning attempts fail. It's had too many cups of coffee and water and who knows what else spilled on it. Works when it wants to - maybe works OK a dozen times in a row and then doesn't work for the next dozen times. Does disable the turn signal switch when it doesn't work. It costs $26 for a Hella switch locally, so that's not too bad. Still not good. I keep looking at the five blank locations up high on the console and thinking why not put it there instead of down low where everything that gets spilled runs into it? Why not put the speaker balance switch there too? . Has anyone else thought of this or tried it? Is ther something I can learn from you instead of learning everything the hard way? Thanks. Re: [MBZ] The death of high fidelity
Talking about BIG stuff, years ago I used to work in a studio that did enLARGEments. I'm talking billboard sized photographs. (well, almost). The biggest photo I ever developed was 8x32 feet. It was for MB Canada oddly enough and was a photo of the W196(?)'s crossing the line at LeMans 1,2,3 in the mid 50's. My darkroom was approx. 60 feet long. Long enough that I could have paper on the wall ready to expose and someone could walk in the door, not a darkroom door, and the paper wouldn't fog! Had a horizontal enlarger, on rails, that was made from an 8x10 body and would focus but pulling a string when the enlarger was 20 or so feet away. Always used 8x10 copy negs and process lenses so sharpness was never an issue. Great fun but no money in it for me, sadly. Also, used to do fine art prints for local photogs exhibitions. I did one for a photog named Larry Towell who I know see is a member of the Magnum agency. THE most prestigious agency in the world. Pleased about that! hehe We also had a Durst Laborator 8x10 vertical enlargerbig bugger that was, and a Elwood (?) 5x7 vertical but it never got used much. The biggest challenge was trying to roll an eight foot long roll of 54 wide single weight fibre-based paper through the developing process without creasing it or leaving half-moon fingernail marks on it...imagine trying to roll wet paper towel that size without tearing..many hours of frustration there. We also made our own developer, stop and fixer from scratch. Bill, my boss, had formulated his own mix back in the 30's and used it ever since. He was awesome; 70 years experience in the darkroom! He used to get mad because I'd want to do exposure test strips for prints but he could just eyeball the neg and print. Got it right first time, too! Are 4 x 5 Graflexes still around? I think they go back to the flash powder days. The newspaper used an Omega D2 enlarger, a Linhof view (don't remember the film size), 4 x 5 Speed Graphics, Leicas, and Rollieflexes during the late 1940s when I worked there as a teenager. I just looked at a Mamiya C330 on the net I prefer SLR. The TLR is particularly useful for IR film and and 87 (black) filter. The C330 was a much more affordable way to try out 6x6 than anything SLR-ish would have been. Re: [MBZ] The death of high fidelity
The largest print we made was 4X8 feet - we turned one of the enlargers horizontally, projected the 35mm neg onto the RC paper tacked to the cork board wall opposite, and exposed for 30 minutes. Development was hand see-sawing it through trays made from wall paper trays hot glued together to make them long enough. We only made a half dozen or so prints that way - too manual. They were exhibited at the State Fair that year. Sounds like you got to work with a real darkroom artist. They are a rare breed now! We brewed up developers for Tech Pan 35mm film (back when it had a special order number and only came in 100 rolls), and played with mixing pyro paper developer form formula, but that's about it. On Dec 30, 2007 11:45 AM, Jeff Zedic [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Talking about BIG stuff, years ago I used to work in a studio that did enLARGEments. I'm talking billboard sized photographs. Re: [MBZ] The death of high fidelity
I have a friend who still plays with his 4X5 tele-graflex once in a while --- they are fun cameras. I have my grandfather's 2X3 speed graphic, but haven't cut/loaded any film for it. Now that I think about it, my first serious camera was a 2X3 Crown Graphic. The Linhof was probably a Technica - my daughter still uses her 4X5 Technica IV when she's serious about an image. On Dec 30, 2007 11:53 AM, archer [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Are 4 x 5 Graflexes still around? I think they go back to the flash powder days. The newspaper used an Omega D2 enlarger, a Linhof view (don't remember the film size), 4 x 5 Speed Graphics, Leicas, and Rollieflexes during the late 1940s when I worked there as a teenager. Luckily the editor told me I should find some other line of work since I was one of the worst photographers he'd ever seen. He was right but it was still fun; darkroom/enlarger work especially. We went out on the downtown streets and asked people the question of the day and took their picture for the daily column. I've often wondered why newspapers quit doing that. The editor said it was good for circulation since it got ordinary people personally involved. The Bible in Romans 3: 23 says: *For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God. * However, we see that he loves us, and he wants us in his glory. *For* *God (Father) so loved the world (you), that he gave us his one and only Son (Jesus, God the Son) that whoever (you) believes in him, shall not perish (in hell), but have eternal life (in heaven) (John 3: 16).
[MBZ] 1967 200D labor of love
I bought this car 3 years ago from the daughter of the original owner, Rolf Seidel. He had bought it new in Red Deer on February 8, 1968 for $5,665. (I have the Bill of Sale.) It was located on a ranch west of Red Deer, Alberta and had spent it's whole life there. Rolf passed away a number of years ago and his daughter, who had being storing it and driving it occasionally decided it was time to find a new home for it. We knew each other through a work connection. We were at a Christmas function and another fellow and I were talking about our old vehicles - his a 56 Chevy and mine a 51 Willys pickup (http://picasaweb.google.com/hamibob/WillysTruck) She mentioned that she had an old car she was wanting to sell - our ears perked up. I subsequently went and looked at it, decided to buy it and then drove it home to Spruce Grove, west of Edmonton - about 2 hours. They had recently had the motor rebuilt so it drives nicely - no power, not much speed but smooth. At least that's what I remember as I haven't driven it for 3 years! Once I got it in the workshop, I discovered that the rust was quite a bit worse than what I originally thought (isn't it always!). I worked on it a bunch when I first got it and then have not been too motivated to do much until the last couple weeks. Now, I'm moving nicely in getting the rusty metal cut out, fabricating new pieces, welding them in and getting it ready to paint. I thought I'd share with you where I am at. I had noticed some discussion about welding lately - I'm guessing none of you are welding like what I am doing! 78s were acoustical until around 1925 IIRC, and then switched over to electrical. The electrical 78 rpm recordings have excellent sound quality, if you don't mind a little surface noise. (the surface noise on 78s from the late 30s is nearly inaudible);) I have tons of wonderful old performances that predate the advance to 33 rpm and hi fi, and they are priceless in terms of the artistry and technical wizardry of the likes of Rachmaninoff, Artur Schnabel, and Josef Hofmann. Among the great pianists of the era, the career of Vladimir Horowitz spanned all the audio tecnhologies and fortunately he still played like a demon into his 60s and the advent of stereophonic sound. Back when his tube oscilliscope still worked, he'd show you the difference. I, however, have at this count 6 tube hi-fis--4 of them late fifties/ early sixties German sets that have incredible sound--a combination of many speakers and very solid cabinets, among other things. Even my dad admits that my Grundig and Telefunken table radios have sound that blow away his Koss Model 88 and Bose wave tabletops, for all their much-lauded fidelity--probably because the Grundig, for example, has six speakers in its cabinet instead of the Koss' 3. I've found them at thrift shops for 75 bucks a piece or so. My other hi-fi is a 1942 Capehart console record player with an automatic changer that will play 20 consecutive 78s--both sides sequentially--completely automatically. It has a HUGE speaker in a solid walnut case, weighs close to 300 lbs, and has what my dad termed a 40-amp push-pull amplifier that will make your pants flap in the breeze. VERY powerful. I love listening to big band jazz on the original-release 78s with it, tho I do miss stereo reproduction. I've picked up a pretty good collection of Jazz on 78 at thrift and antique shops dirt cheap--as in $3 per box of 120 or so disks. Nobody wants 'em anymore. Filled my SD with 'em on one trip. Wow! You have your work cut out for you; especially at the bottom of the left rear door. Before and after pictures will be interesting. I had the same year/model car and did work on the fender. The metal was supposed to be shrunk after repair by using a special tool that made corrugations which were then filled in. Don't know how successful the shrinking was, but the fender held up fine to the end. Thanks for sharing your experience, Jim. It gives me confidence. The new switch is ordered, and it can go on the shelf with some other stuff I have ratholed against possible future need. I'm not sure I understand the question, are you saying going from a laptop 2.5 ATA (ie. PATA or IDE) to a desktop SATA? Not always an apples to apples conversion. Many (most?) laptop drives are 5400rpm (some older drives are even 4300) while many (again most?) desktop drives are 7200rpm. Random reads on a 7200rpm drives will be much faster. I'd venture to say that in most cases you'll see a larger speed bump going from a 5400rpm drive to a 7200 because its the seek speed that is lacking not transfer rate. -Curt Date: Sat, 29 Dec 2007 11:32:54 -0700 From: Craig McCluskey [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] OT, computer supplies To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII On Sat, 29 Dec 2007 08:17:46 -0800 (PST) LWB250 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I would agree with Curt, as I have a laptop (15 MBP 2.0Ghz C2D, 2G RAM) that has a SATA drive in it, and I don't see a significant difference in access speeds over my former 15 G4 1.8Ghz that used ATA. Some corrections additions: Vacuum tubes will do clip. A vacuum tube is a voltage controlled device while a transistor is a current controlled device and either can be driven to clip. Clipping is nothing more than the device being turned all the way on or off before the input signal reaches full potential. Transisitor clipping is sharper than vacuum tube clipping. Vacuum tube amps distort more than transistor amps and the vacuum tube distortion is interpreted as a warmer sound. Transistor amp manufacturers have not been able to duplicate this distortion because it's mechanical - it's in the physical tube design itself. I can still hear the difference in the old radios amps I work on today. You believe the sound from a vacuum tube amp is higher quality because it actually sounds better. Put a scope on the output of a tube amp a transistor amp and compare the difference and it's obvious that the transistor amp output is cleaner. Tom www.kegkits.com - Never miss a thing. Too bad you had so much trouble isolating this problem. The OEM foam pipe deteriorates fairly quickly. Mine was less than 4 years old and it crumbled into sticky chunks when I bumped it while changing the ACC amp. It's a tight fit, but most folks recommend replacing the OEM foam tube with a piece of foam pipe insulation from Lowes, Home Depot, etc. It's cheap and pretty durable. Re: [MBZ] 1987 300D temp sending unit
I checked out the thermistor yesterday and found it to be good. The wire going from the sensor to the gauge was no good, as well as the sensor itself. I ran a new wire, as opposed to trying to find the break, and went to pull-a-part today where I bought 3 sensors. (as well as a BUNCH of other stuff)I will test them tonight, when my wife is not looking (need the pan on the stove with boiling water) and then install if good. The 3 I bought are all different so I need to compare to the one in the car. One is 100 to 107, one is 105 to 115 and one is 100 to 110. Results to follow. I've got a now very battered Fuji 2650 2MP. Its been across the country with me, umm 5 times now. Down to Florida umm, 5 or 6 times I forget. Gone to camp times without count. I've taken pictures from planes, boats, motorcycles, and snowmobiles. One time I was taking a picture of another snowmobiler at ~50mph and I dropped it. When I went back to get it I drove over it by accident in the dark. The screen cracked when I dropped it from the 2nd floor balcony of a hotel room. It still works pretty well although the flash takes a long time to charge and its hard on batteries. I'd asked my folks for a replacement 5MP for Christmas but haven't seen them yet. -Curt Date: Sun, 30 Dec 2007 18:18:53 -0500 From: Gary Hurst [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [MBZ] Photography, was - The death of high fidelity To: Mercedes Discussion List mercedes@okiebenz.com Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 i'm on my 3rd one. this last one is a 5.1 megapixel tiny shirt pocket size one. the first one was a 1 megapixel job that i still have that was shaped like an ordinary camera. i bought it new for 50 bucks. then i bought a new one in the same style as that one for 150, but that one was quickly lost/stolen. teh shirt pocket one was like 30 bucks on ebay. it was sold by one of those distressed electronic floor model liquidator types with no promise regarding performance. i bought a $5 new battery and it works fine. Re: [MBZ] ok mac heads
I read somewhere there is a market for used cell phones (well I'm not sure you get paid for them). Apparently they are refurbished or recycled. If refurbished they are then sold into third world countries where cell phones are likely the only way to get phone service. See other diesel lists notes about STEALING copper wire, aka telephone lines Let's see NYTimes archives... Ah yes, link to http://www.recellular.com/recycling/donatePhones.asp mmm even a program to get phones to usa military folks, and Wal-mart takes them (who knew)... Re: [MBZ] 1967 200D labor of love
Yes, before I close up the rocker panels, I coat the inside with a rust inhibitor type paint. On the drivers side, I replaced the whole rocker so it was easy to coat but on the passenger side, it's a bit better so I'm patching the rocker rather than replacing it entirely. Fortunately(?), the holes are big enough that I can get in there and clean it up and then slop the paint around. By the time I am done, I will have coated the whole bottom of the car and all the parts where rust of any type is visible. I'm doing it primarily with a paint brush. (I won't use a paint brush for the outside!) I don't weld around the whole panel that I am replacing for a couple reasons. First, continuous welding causes warping. Second, it is plenty strong enough by tacking every few inches. Third, a lot of the stuff that I am welding to isn't always real strong. I typically cut out anything that is weak but the old metal isn't as easy to weld to as the new stuff - quite easy to blow holes if you aren't careful. Fourth, the original rocker panels are not continuous welded - they are tack welded every few inches. So, I tack it so that it is strong. Then I grind it down a bit, then put on some seam sealer to close the all the holes that are left. Next, I'll apply some bondo in places that I want to look pretty and will be painting the car color. Inside the wheel wells, underneath and the inside, I'll put on some high build rockerguard type coating. That will nicely hide my bad welding! .. I saw some surface rust behind the panels you cut out - did you use anything like POR in there before closing it up? Did you run complete beads around the replacement panels, or leave them tacked in place, and sealed them with body filler? Interesting, and the Canon Powershot would also be a candidate. One thing I liked about the Leica was the big LCD screen on the back. You still have a functioning Seagate ST 225 Seagate 251??? I had one of each with a Winchester drive controller. They made controllers for the smaller drives too, not just the large platter drives. I just ran over and took a look at this SL, looks good But I'd have to find/put engine in I guess, probably not worth the hastle but I like the six and the bumpers on a euro. I figure 3k or less for the car, and $2500 for another engine installed 5-5.5k for a sweet little SL for the summer. http://seattle.craigslist.org/sno/car/523599720.html ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
