Re: [MBZ] I'm in The Wrong Business...A Fresh Alignment...Jacks

2008-01-05 Thread Timothy Robinson
I recently had total front end, tie rods, rocker arms, upper bushings, drag
link, alignment, oil/fluids/filters, replace window regulator, all four
brakes and fuel tank replacement. Total labor was less than $500. though
Todd and Gary did furnish parts. I thought labor was more than fair though I
realised they were able to mark up parts. Still thought total was a deal.
Would have probably been more expensive if I'd tried to "save" money by
furnishing parts myself.

I was pleased, and yeah, sure drives good!

Subject: [MBZ] Today's OM 603 adventure

My brother's SDL has had a persistant vibration at idle for quite a
while. We've replaced the belt tensioner and belt (big improvement,
since the belt got oil soaked during a previous adventure involving
the chain tensioner), but it still thumps away.

I asked him if he'd checked the crank pulley, since when that comes
loose the harmonic balancer does too (it's held on by the six pulley
bolts) and I didn't want his wife to beat the font cover in. He
checked, but said when he shoved on the balancer, it felt like it
moved, and the idle got better for a while.

So he decided that he needed a new balancer, and a new crankshaft front
seal since the old one was obviously leaking (oily balancer and
drenched alternator). He got the parts from our friend the
semi-retired German Indy, and we tore it apart this afternoon.

First bit of fun was the lack of the ring gear locking tool, which Hans
doesn't have (none of his customers drives an SDL anymore). The crank
flange bolt is torqued to 320 Nm, needless to say you aren't going to
get it loose without holding the crank somehow.

We improvised -- since he's got a new balancer anyway, and the rubber
on the old one is VERY soft (the source of his vibration, I'm fairly
certain), we just welded a piece of angle iron to it so that it hit the
floor after the old balancer was bolted back in place. I figured the
very worst that would happen is that we'd tear the rubber off and have
to weld the angle iron to the remaining part. Bolt came right out with
the help of a length of square tubing.

The flange came out easily with the help of a gear puller, and so did
the seal. Big old slot worn in the seal surface, seal was rock hard
after 250,000 miles. Oil everywhere, as you would expect.

Went to put the new seal in, and haha, wrong part. Listed as correct
on the receipt, but it appears to be the one for an M117, not the 603!
No way it's gonna fit -- inside is correct, but the outer diameter is
15mm to large.

A search of all the local parts stores resulted in "we can get it for
you Monday afternoon" -- no one stocks that size, its' right between a
couple common ones (45mm inside, 67 mm outside, common sizes are 65 and
68 mm outside.)

So the car is sitting partially dismanteled until we get the part on
Tuesday (the Benz remplacement seal is offset a couple mm back to sit
on a fresh part of the flange seal surface.

It's always something. This does give us a chance to get the radiator
cleaned, though. Packed full of crap and oil, I'm surprised it didnt'

I found three answers.

Diesel has a typical coefficient of cubical expansion of 0.084% per degree C.

Coefficient of Expansion per degree F (C) = 0.00060 (0.00108)

http://www.dot.state.oh.us/construction/OCA/Specs/SSandPN2002/10600402for2002.pdf

Or the linear thermal expansion coefficient is 0.00046 /deg F

Having worked at both, that's because McDonalds easily has single-day
sales that exceed the entire week's sales at Dominos. I remember
nights at Dominos where we sold maybe 10 pies the whole night, a
little more that $100. Also Dominos, at least where I worked, had
this stupid idea that managers and manager trainees, who were paid by
the hour, needed to work 60 - 70 hours a week, so you were paying
RIDICULOUS amounts of overtime. It was utterly insane.

Owning a high-volume McDonalds certainly can reward you well, but you
have to have a lot of your own capital invested *and* you also have
to work: McDonalds owners are also operators; you can't just own a
McDonalds franchise as an investment. You also have to develop good
managers who can control food and labor costs if you want that
"license" to bear fruit. In lower volume stores it's much more
difficult, in our market the owner had 4 stores and two of them
barely covered costs, one turned a moderate profit and one did really
well. All the stores were clean and well run, the difference was the
sales volume, largely driven by location.

If you want seeds, tomatoes especially, try http://www.seedstrust.com/. I
planted some of their Siberian tomatoes last summer. A decent crop in our

As the temperature drops, water expands _only_ from 4 C to 0 C.
Then once it is solid, it continues to contract.

This is because of the crystal formation that occurs when it
becomes ice.

kerosene in cold climates and during the winter - so you will get less

30 years ago, a single McD franchise was a license to make 300k or more a
year, and you were doing good to make 100k from a Domino's store if you
worked 60 hours a week yourself. At the time the medium small town nearest to
me had a McD, a Hardees, Little Ceasars, Dairy Queen and no other chain food.

Now that town has McD, DQ, Taco Bell, Mancino's pizza & subs, Subway x2, BK,
Ceasars, Papa John's, Pizza Hut, Hungry Howie's, Arby's, Wendy's, and I'm
sure I missed one or two. Hardees is gone. Domino's and Hot N Now have come
and gone. There is also a local pizza chain, several local eateries and two
Chinese restaraunts, one mostly sitdown and the other specializes in takeout.
There are just too many storefronts for any one of them to be very profitable.

In the late 1980's I knew Domino's franchise owners who worked serious hours
and only made $30-40k. Now I'm sure there are stores that lose money even
with the owner managing them full time.

Just google for "heirloom open-pollinated vegetable seed".

Open-pollinated means that the seed will grow the same plant as
the one the seeds came from. It is the "opposite" of hybrid.

Heirloom plants are those open-pollinated variates that have
existed for at least a few decades.

Interesting reading.

Not true. I know of at least 4 stations in the towns two towns
closest to me that have above ground tanks.

And this tip is only valid for _above_ ground tanks because the
ground temperature doesn't really change. In most of the USA, a
root cellar that's only 4ft deep keeps a rather constant
temperature.

A gallon is a volume measure, so a gallon is still a gallon. But
the density of the fuel does indeed change with temperature. So
if you buy your fuel cold, it can expand in the car's tank. But
with underground tanks, the temperature of the fuel doesn't
really change much. Except when the delivery truck is pumping in
hot, or extra cold, fuel.

Not true. Only in major markets and with gasoline. I've never
seen vapor recovery with diesel.

Got the old girl aligned at Jacks on Thomas at 29th St.the place Bud
mentioned. Had him do the upper bushings and the steering damper and then an
alignment. I supplied the steering damper, he got the upper bushing (since I
didn't plan ahead and get them from Rusty). Got there at 0715 and was out by

0750. He charged $300 labor. I nearly had a stroke. He was trying to
convince me that is the going rate. I don't think it is. Am I wrong? Do I

It does if they can't bore or resleeve the cylinders. I don't
 remember
the details, but Marshall was of the opinion that only the factory
was able to recondition the 350 blocks so that they lasted like a
new engine. (or did the factory simply use a new block with the old
 crank etc?)

What the heck are you talking about???

Profits in the restaurant biz are far from "unimaginable", especially
in fast food there is too much competition.

Please enlighten us as to this alleged "abuse" I worked there for a
number of years in high school and college and there was never any
kind of treatment of employees that I would even call unfair much
less abusive, even in retrospect.

Coffee & 2 donuts are cheaper, and the combo works better because the

2008-01-05 Thread dave walton
There was concern that once they bored the 3.0 to make a 3.5 there was
not enough metal left to support the sleeve. The 3.0, the original
3.5's and the earliest remanufactured 3.5's do not have sleeves. I
went over this with Marshall when I was working on my 3.5. He was
pretty sure that all the remanufactured 3.5's we saw in this country
had sleeves - but was not 100% sure. A few might have slipped in. They
supposedly worked out the bugs in Germany when the 3.5's first started
failing.

If I had known of the rod issues, I would not have purchased my S350.
In retrospect, I'm glad I did because it's such as sweet ride even
with the high maintenance costs.

Re: [MBZ] OU stinking up the tostitos again!

2008-01-05 Thread Gary Hurst
the problem is in the modern era when the teams have gone pro. in the early
days, a bunch of harvard STUDENTS would get together with a bunch of yale
STUDENTS and play some early version of football.

somehow between ww2 and the 70s, the game went big time and pro. it became
about nothing more than finding the best mercenaries to assure victory,
details be damned. 100k people go see this live and millions watch it on
tv.

real college football still exists. a thousand people go watch it and the
game is maybe carried by the campus radio station.

ooh, gotta go. a college football game is about to kick off on espn!

2008-01-05 Thread Peter Frederick
McD's treatment of employees is criminal. The whole enterprise is
predicated on abusing young workers who don't know enough to demand
proper and fair treatment and pay at work. The profits are almost
unimaginable, the food is crap, and the abuse astonishing.

Needless to say, in other parts of the world they can't abuse their
employees anywhere near as much, and have to pay much better wages,
too. I think even in the Third World.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Discussion List: coffee is hot, milkshakes are cold, and it's all about profit

2008-01-05 Thread Curt Raymond

*smile*
When I was there we had a filter thing you ran the grease through every day.
Then once a week or once every two weeks (I forget) you pumped the grease into
it (the filter thing was like a shop vac on wheels) and rolled it out to a
garage that had a grease dumpster and pumped from the vac thing into the
dumpster.

Well one time I rolled it out to the dumpster and the power went out... We were
all worried about keeping cold food cold and didn't think about the grease. So
15 minutes later it occured to me, by that time I had a solid brick of fat...
I went to Wal-Mart across the street and bought a paint stripper so when the
power came back on I could heat it up enough to pump.

One time a kid tried to walk across the surface of the grease dumpster which
was about 1/2 full. He sank to his thighs in grease He went swimming in the
ocean off the town dock and you could see the dogfish appear like magic...

I only worked at McDs 1 month but oh the stories.

Re: [MBZ] bcs dissatisfaction

2008-01-05 Thread Luther
Do you remember that the second time Missouri played OU? The score was 38-17
and OU is the only REAL team that you played this year (2 losses), the
rest are
over-rated fluff. Did you see the way your former opponent Illinois was
manhandled by USC? Did you see the same feat that Hawaii suffered at
the hands
of Georgia? USC, LSU, Georgia, Ohio St and W.Virginia (I was impressed
Lt.) are
the top teams in the nation, no questions. Anyone else in the BCS games were
just lucky to be there.

I am not bitter. Arkansas played the worst game of the last 2 years against
Missouri. The first drive of the game was ALMOST what our offense is
normallycapable of, and it seemed that we handily moved the ball the length of
the field on your defense for that drive. You say you stopped D-Mac
and Jones?
Sure, the rest of the team never stepped up around them. If they would have
played HALF as good as they are capable, this game would have been a
battle. If
we play as well as we did against LSU, you would have lost by 2 TDs or more.
Arkansas had a coach who didn't give a damn about the future of our
program and
that hurt. The coaches we had were lame ducks, and probably will never have
their own head coaching jobs anywhere in the future.
