Primaries vary by state. Most places I lived require you to declare a party
when you register to vote, then you can only vote in that party's primary.
There are exceptions; like in FL everyone can vote in a primary when only
one party has candidates. Caucuses are a whole different deal.

Re: [MBZ] Go Vote Tomorrow - How does it work

2008-02-04 Thread Tom Hargrave
This is handled state by state. In Alabama, I can vote for anyone I want in
the election primary. In other some states you must register to a party when
you register & then you can only vote in that party's primary. But you can
still vote for whomever you want in the general election. In no case do you
actually have to be a party member.

When I actually go to the polls tomorrow, I'll be asked if I need a Democrat
or Republican ballot. In case anyone's wondering, I will draw a Republican
ballot. I'm no happier with the current president than most of my friends
but our current foreign policy failures are no excuse to vote a Socialist
with a GOD complex into office (sorry, couldn't resist).

Re: [MBZ] why america is finished NOW SEARS (was: pizza, not mercedes)

2008-02-04 Thread E M
I used to buy made America Levi jeans for $75 a pair here in Canada. I'd
buy a few pair at a time, and buy more when they wore out. Went the last
time, bought two pair, paid $55 each. Got home, was as if I bought two
different sizes. Read the label, made in Mexico. Took one pair back once
for an exchange, and the other pair twice, due to defects in workmanship.
Call me fussy, but I kinda like both legs the same length and the buttons to
line up with the button holes. They cost $20 less per pair than the
American made versions, and I guess they stayed in business but they're the
last pair of Levi's I'll ever buy.

Re: [MBZ] why america is finished NOW SEARS (was: pizza, not mercedes)

2008-02-04 Thread Tom Hargrave
Just because something is made in China does not mean it's cheap and there
is a huge difference in quality between Harbor Freight and Sears "made in
China" tools.

And there is more to "made in wherever" than most who complain will ever be
willing to understand. I "grew up" in telecomm manufacturing as a test,
process and quality Engineer and even back in the 70's, we would out source
manufacturing to other countries. Most of these assemblies and products were
too costly, dirty or dangerous to be manufactured here in the States.

And the same process is still happening today. We hear of manufacturing &
goods moving off shore. But has anyone taken the trouble to look at what is
really moving to China? It's all of the low cost, labor intensive
manufacturing jobs that no-one wants to do here.

I remember when the last Lee plant in Tennessee moved - my sister in-law
worked there for 12 years, until they closed. She worked 12 hours / day, 6
days / week at a base pay of $8.00 / hour. Also, she had no fingernails left
from handling the blue jean material all day long. Neither did the
co-workers I met. Lee moved, not to save money, but to stay in business.
Market pressures kept their selling price down, they could not afford to pay
higher wages and they could not attract enough workers to stay in production
in Tennessee.

Take a hard look at the other extreme - higher tech manufacturing and you'll
find that jobs are growing in this country.

Stop in at Sears today, interested in getting a small band saw and
drill press for my garage. Every single one of their bench power
tools, both the Craftsman and the Craftsman "Professional" is now made
in China.

Guess they have to keep their prices competitive, but this is
disappointing. If I want to buy Chinese power tools I have Harbor
Freight and many other catalog/online options; Sears tools and "Made
in America" used to go hand-in-hand but not
 anymore.

Re: [MBZ] 600 SWB vacuum diagram?

2008-02-04 Thread E M
I just had a look at a buyers guild, and it lists total production of all
600s at 2,677. I've seen different numbers quoted in different sources, so
not sure, but I would imagine a large number of those produced have been
kept running.

I'm not sure if they were truly built to order only, or if some dealers
ordered them up. I've read articles saying the current SLR and Maybach are
to customer order only too, and yet I've seen both on the floor of my local
dealer. Wonder if a few dealers in certain areas, felt they knew their
customers well enough that if they ordered one up and put it on the floor,
they knew it would move. I seem to recall reading somewhere, that they were
held in stock in very limited numbers, but near the end of product, you had
to order them and put a down payment before they would even start building
one.

I wonder what the future for the current Maybach is? I read sales arent'
what they thought they would be, and a face lift is due soon. I've always
like the idea of the Maybach, but unlike the 600, just too many parts from
the bins to justify the price. I hope the face lift takes a few hints from
the current S class. Would be cool too if they went back to using more
hydraulics.

That was for Sales Genie I think -- they had one earlier with an
Indian character with a very distinct accent and stereotypical
speech. I was rather surprised by both spots.

OTOH I do remember them... Hm.

the pats have a pretty formidable defense, albeit not dominating.

the giants defense really stepped up. superhuman intensity. i've never

Re: [MBZ] 600 SWB vacuum diagram?

2008-02-04 Thread Peter Frederick
I thought 1978 -- sales in the US stopped in 1972 as Benz didn't see
any point in doing the emissions certification for later sale on the
M100 (it would probably have required fitting D-Jet or worse, K-Jet)
and the numbers sold simply didn't justify the cost, even with the
300 SEL 6.3 tossed in. Lots of them ended up in the Middle East
before production ceased -- no emissions controls there then.

There was a 6.9L 450SEL sold for a while with K-jet, but I don't know
if that was the M100 or not.

I think I saw some production numbers somewhere a few years ago
indicating that something like 12,000 600's in various sizes were
produced, and 6000 or so W109's with the M100, giving a production
run over 15 years of 18,000 total -- less than 2000 vehicles a year.

Re: [MBZ] 600 SWB vacuum diagram?

2008-02-04 Thread E M
I think the last ones made were around '81 ? Not sure about what NOS parts
are still on the shelves, but I have done a little looking in the past, for
fun, and some parts do cost the moon. Probably one of those cars more than
others, where being patient and finding the best one you can, and paying up
front is the cheapest way of getting a good one.

2008-02-04 Thread Peter Frederick
I meant that the vacuum system should be similar to a 1963 era Benz,
not that anything else was.

The 600 Grand was essentially a custom order car, just like the
Adenauer it replaced. Most parts are unique, not found in any other
Benz ever made, and no very long out of production, so the are custom
fabrication if you need one (as in someone has to retrieve the molds
and cast you a new water pump if you cannot repair the one you
have).

Body parts are now hand made, and probably were originally, too.

You're changing the rules in the middle of the game! Unfair!

You listed 2^1, 2^2, 2^3. I listed 2^2, 2^3, 2^4 and 2^3, 2^4, 2^5, both
of which are all powers of two as you initially listed.

And, by the way, we all missed

01/02/04, which is 2^0, 2^1, 2^2.

Understatement of the year. The thing about the M100 cars is that the
name isn't just the name, it is also a cost multiplier over what it
costs to maintain a standard, no-frills six-banger Mercedes. Depending
on which one you've got, you multiply by 6.3, 6.9, or 600...

just dont believe in giving kids cars. Well, I dont believe in buying
them cars. I suppose if I already have them and they pay their own ins
and gas, and learn to fix them that would be OK.

I believe Oklahoma has a bit different mindset on self- and property
protection than does Maine, more like Texas I would suppose. I am sure
you are compliant with that mindset and take advantage fully of it. You
might also want to take out a restraining order (not that it will have
any effect) so that you have some justification for any consequences of
a violation of it.

That car idea wasn't bad either.

Not only has my tremor diminished enough that I can change oil; check this
photo of the replica 1790 Simon Willard tall case clock I've built recently.
It's a Bartly Classic Reproductions kit. I started it 1 Nov 07; finished it
10 Jan 08. Son's iPhone photo doesn't show inlay work on clock case very
well, but it certainly shows very well that I've been eating too much.

Re: [MBZ] OT why america is finished NOW SEARS

2008-02-04 Thread Kevin Kraly
I am afraid that the underlying problem is that recent generations of
Americans think they are too good for jobs that are hard, dirty, or don't
pay well ... even if better jobs are not available or they lack required
skills or education. There are plenty of jobs as shown by the MILLIONS of
"undocumented workers" (makes as much sense as unlicensed pharmacists) who
live and work here while sending cash back home.

Yep. The illegals are just filling the void. My nephews and nieces think
this way. Personally, if I didn't have a job and needed one to live, I
would do just about anything to make ends meet. There are plenty of jobs
for those who WANT to work.

[MBZ] OT - diminished tremor, oil changes, etc.

2008-02-04 Thread wilton strickland
Not only has my tremor diminished enough that I can change oil; check this
photo of the replica 1790 Simon Willard tall case clock I've built recently.
It's a Bartly Classic Reproductions kit. I started it 1 Nov 07; finished it
10 Jan 08. Son's iPhone photo doesn't show inlay work on clock case very
well, but it certainly shows very well that I've been eating too much.

They are doing fine, getting adjusted pretty well. Im not sure if I
mentioned it but the murder was granted bail of 100K. I couldnt not
believe it. The bad part is that there is no requirement that he stay
in the state. The worse part is that his folks in California are going
to bail him out. The disaster is that Im quite sure he will show up here.

I agree that is the conventional wisdom, and you are probably right, BUT, there

If the ultra -conservatives would quit wasting their votes on Huckabee, then
Romney would overwhelmingly win the nomination. I am not an anti-Mccain voter,

I say there's no practical difference between the growth of government
and the shrinkage of civil rights under the national socialists (GWB,
Huckabee, Ghouliani, Thompson) and the same happening under marxist
rule (Clinton, McCain, Obama). Romney's is a more centrist kind of
socialism, more like the Brits or the French, but the result is the
same. It looks like Billary vs McLame in the final, which is really
no choice at all inside the one party system. Time to vote outside
the system, Green, Taxpayer, Constitution, Libertarian, anything
but Republicrat. At least back when we had Jimmy Carter the
Communist Party had candidates of its own, now they just give
advice on which Democrat best supports the Communist ideals.

Pulling the pan, draining and refilling the trans and TC, and
replacing the gasket fixed a similar problem with my 82 300SD's
trans--it would sometimes not shift out of third. Getting a trans
flush made no difference. The filter needed to be replaced. Might try
that, if disconnecting the kickdown switch doesn't help. Does sound
electrical, too, if shutting off, operating the kickdown, and
restarting fixes it. Check to see that kickdown switch is returning
easily, and no carpet, crud, etc are preventing it from returning.
THen I'd take the switch out and bench test it. Also make sure that
no moisture is in switch.

Re: [MBZ] interior light problem

It prys out from either side - look closely and you'll
see a little slot or gap on the ends.

IIRC the dome light has a separate set of contacts on
the door switch.

You may also have an open circuit (on the dome light
switch) when the switch is in the door position. The
switch is not what I could consider robust...

I perceive ... Glad to hear it. My father-in-law, a draftsman by training
[though he made his money designing and building boat furniture and
equipment] needed a heart medication in his later years that caused a hand
tremor. After a lifetime of drawing and designing gaffs and fighting chairs
[he came up with the idea] and designs on his grandchildren's clothes he
could suddenly not even print clearly. Quite a blow [though he never
mentioned it]. I can only imagine how the reversal of that must be.

We've voted Democratic for president in every election since 1988.
That's a pretty consistent record. I don't see Oregon as comparable
to Washington at all---the latter has a much larger, more diverse
population.

I think Plax had some inside information there. Brady was saying Plax had
nothing to do with holding him to 17 points unless Plax was switching to
defense. When the Giants' offense spent ten minutes on their first drive,
I knew why Plax thought it was going to be a low scoring game, and it was
the Giants' offense that helped do it.

[MBZ] interior light problem

2008-02-04 Thread Allan Streib
A minor issue with my 300D, but annoying: the front interior light
does not come on when I open the front door. It works if I move the
little roller switch to the "on" position, and the door switches work
because the headlight alarm sounds if I open the door with the
headlights on.

Dirty contacts in the dome light? Does it just pop out by prying
around the edges? I don't want to break it.

Disconnect the wire to the kickdown solenoid?

Now that is a fine idea. Mercedes Striplin has a ring to it don't you think?

I don't think he wants to give her the middle name Benz though :D.

Not at all true!!

OR has one R. Senator (Gordon Smith) and like Washington is genreally
regarded as a toss-up state despite a green reputation.

[MBZ] 1985 300CD intermittently sticking transmission issue

2008-02-04 Thread andrew strasfogel
Group,

Her 1985 300CD intermittently won't progress past first gear unless we stop
the car, turn it off, and press the throttle to the floor. When we re-start
the car, it upshifts normally. I installed a new kick down switch a few
months ago, which reduced the frequency but did not end this glitch. Could
the transmission be on its last legs or is there an external [cheap]
adjustment that can be made? The car still has its original,
well-maintained transmission with approximately 210 K miles. It does NOT
SLIP between gears, just occasionally STICKS in first (more often than not
when it's cold, first thing in the AM).

Any suggestions or theories greatly appreciated!

Same here---Oregon's primary isn't for a couple of months, and no
national candidate ever bothers campaigning here anyway, since the
state always votes Democrat. I can't even remember the last time I
saw a political TV commercial, other than ones for our local ballot
measures.

Unfortunately by the time we get to vote in Indiana (May 6), the
national contest will already have been decided.
