Not talking about the _invention_ of the computer, that can
serve as a point of contention among all who care to debate
it. (Fun over beer.) Talking about the explosive proliferation
of same. That's quite clearly a US thang.

Re: [MBZ] Cars of the 70s - comparing gas GM to gas MercedesandVettes

2008-02-16 Thread Zoltan Finks
Yes, this contributed to my love of simplicity.

The post '72 cars started getting so much performance dampening garbage that
I did not know how to deal with. (Not that I was aware of it at the exact
time - in '72 I was one year old).

My '68 big block was as simple as it gets (after some mods) - no A/C, no
P/S. One fan belt. Nothing to hamper performance and nothing to confuse me
with trash I didn't care about.

As for the dreadful '80s: I recall when the Mustang GT came out with it's
legendary 5.0 ltr 302 c.i. engine. It was the hot performer, but I recall
shaking my head at its pitiful 225 h.p.

Now we have 4 cyl. engines making that power, and 6 cyl. engines making 300
h.p. and V8s making 400 h.p.

Seems the auto industry has surmounted the emissions challenge.

I thought the first true computer was build by the British to break the
enigma code. The enigma code being the forerunner of the internet but of
course Al Gore was right there and built both things, then went on to
invent global warming and is now further cashing in by making movies
about global warming which explains how we can beat global warming by
the little people tightening the belt.

Not many people drink Fosters over hers, considered cat's pee. Most
people drink VB (Victoria Bitter) which is a real bitter beer but that
has also changed over time and is now more like dish water.
Personally I prefer Euro beer, one of my favourites is Hollandia,
relatively cheap and tastes nice http://www.tastebeer.com.au/beer/162
http://www.beerguide.com.au/beer-reviews/Bavaria-Brouwerij-NV/Hollandia
Usually 10 to 20 dollars cheaper than other imports and pretty much on
par with domestic stuff.

Not true in my case. It has been blocked off with the intake
manifold gasket on all my engines. So the only thing that warms
my carburetors is the coolant in both ends of the intake and the
cylinder head just a few inches away. Obviously, the coolant
won't help much at first. And I think the '85 has a thick fiber
spacer between the manifold and the carburetor base.

Give the dealer a quick ring, maybe a new key will cost less than you
think. Every so often, I still get a pleasant shock from my dealers Never

Well, not "free", I did spend $1800 on a service at the time. Ok, maybe I
just got screwed. But it was a very nice key pouch. :-)

Re: [MBZ] OT now beer. aerial views not like OZ

2008-02-16 Thread E M
I agree, beer making is a real art, and unfortunately, I feel it doesn't get
the respect in North America that is does elsewhere. We enjoy it, but we
tend to give it the kind of respect we give eating Kraft Slices, rather than
what a Frenchman gives to eating Brie. I've made wine, and that's easy. I
mean, how hard can a product be to make, that was produced at one time by
dumping the ingredients in a tub and jumping on them with your bare feet? I
once told a German friend that I like wheat beer. She asked how I drink it,
and I said out of the bottle. After scolding me, she ordered me not to
drink another beer, until the proper wheat beer glasses arrived, which she
was sending right away. The glasses arrived with very exact instructions on
how to pour beer too. lol. I don't think her opinion of Canadians was ever
the same after that.

I'll note once you stick in the revised (double/triple/etc) part the
stability improves greatly.
However the general stigma impacts the price. You just need to find
one for which the owner
has paid the price of fixing it all and buy it cheap.

Then it's golden, and yes mine is not for sale...

Son had the only key we have made by an "impression" and trial-and-error
method.
MB provides "original" keys via VIN - that's not by copying a used key -
that's exactly the same as the original.

Re: [MBZ] W124 vent light and bulb out warning light?

2008-02-16 Thread E M
We're not required to us parking lights here, but I would often see them
used in Italy. I've always been curious, just how long can you leave a
parking light on, before it drains the battery to the point where it's a
problem starting, or, it will start, but then you're asking the alt to work
overtime to charge the depleted battery?

And a little trivia, which country and city was the first to use parking
lights?

Beer making is a real art. I tried making it one time and it came out
smelling like acetone.

Father made it when I was a kid. Mother would scold him about drinking too
much, so he would sneak three bottles up from the cellar before dinner and
hide them someplace. After dinner he would listen to the radio and drink
his three bottles one after the other while mother thought he was nursing
one.
One night mother almost caught him with bottles in hand so he quickly put
them in the oven. Supper was already on the table, but mother stuck an
extra casserole in the oven and turned it on.

When the first bottle went off it took the other two with it; quite an
explosion. Jippy the dog, who was a coward anyway, went straight through
the bottom of the screen door and didn't come out from under the porch until
the next day. I don't think dad ever made beer after that.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Bimmer key

I've never purchased a key from a dealer. Do they cut it from a stored
computer template when you give your VIN? I know a lot of people wait until
a key is somewhat old, and worn, and then cut a key from it. What they end
up with is a copy of an old worn key. lol. They start off with a key that's
already 50% gone, and in a year, wonder why it takes so much jiggling in the
locks to work. I've only made copies from lightly used originals, and then
tuck the originals away should I need them again in the future.

[MBZ] OT - Bimmer key

We HAVE a key that was made at one of those local hardware stores, key
places, etc. It will not work in the door locks and is problemmatic in the
ignition switch. That's why I'm trying to help'em find one via VIN a la MB,

It's _a_ meter, not _the_ meter. Simple!

Also, though we may have gallons they are not _imperial_ gallons,
which are somewhat larger.

The US is ahead of the game again, after all we are the
home of the computer. The (now) US system of volume
measurement is power-of-two, not -ten. (Ever notice
how so many of the old measurements are doublings?)
The machines seem to prefer the old units.

The nighttime parking light positions only work with the

Thanks, Ed, good picture. I never heard of the long handled skillet so it
must be a Canadian invention. I was up in the cab several times as a grade
schooler, but never got to ride anyplace but the passenger cars.

Dad never complained about the heat, even when he had to wear a wool uniform
in the summer. He did complain about the coal smoke, though.

Re: [MBZ] OT aerial views not like OZ

2008-02-16 Thread E M
After changing a timing belt once, and feeling pretty much like there was
nothing I couldn't do, I decided to make some wheat beer. I bought all the
gear, followed all the steps, collected lots of authentic 500ml beer bottles
and lovingly prepared them. All was going well until it came time to siphon
the beer into the bottles. Things took a real ugly turn and I got so
peeved, it all ended up down the drain. After that, I had a whole new
respect for brewers, and I now feel they earn every penny of the $3.40 I pay
per bottle for wheat beer. :-) But I'll tell you, the kitchen did smell
amazing for about 2 weeks after that, even though I ended up having to
repaint the ceiling. hee hee.

I was thinking of the Kiwis.

Up here, they seem to be close to them but I was shocked to find out how far

things.

Greenland looked smaller than it is. The US looked the same size as Canada
even though it's quite a bit smaller, and NZ looked like it was close to Oz.

Yeah, those posh people, who do they think they are, with their spell check
and proper punctuation, and spelling colour with an U, when you can just as
easily spell it color, and the whole world still knows what you're talking
about. You don't want the likes of them in positions of power, they're
nothing but trouble. ;-)

I've got an 1892 Waltham that was used on the RR. Someone left it with my

Don't remember since it was years ago. Point was that it would just go back
in storage and the oil would dry out again, I suppose. The weight of the
watch is remarkable. When my father worked on passenger runs and wore a
uniform, he would car ry it in a "watch pocket" in the vest which was worn
under the jacket. When he worked on freight runs and wore work clothes, he
would carry it in the usual pants watch pocket.

Riding the steam trains in those days was a lot of fun for a kid, and a
railroaders family members could ride free all they wanted.

[MBZ] OT....Steam trains

2008-02-16 Thread archer
Yes Gerry, one of my Great Grandfathers was an engineer, (driving them), and
my other Great Grandfather was a mechanical engineer, he (designed them).
Ed

Fascinating! Was that the really big engines with many driving wheels for
climbing the mountains? I've seen pictures of engines with two sets of
steam cylinders which were used for that purpose out west. Would be
interesting to see pictures of the 6000 if you can send them.
Gerry

P.S. Attached picture (if it comes through) is the type engine used on the
Louisville, Ky / St.Louis,Ill run during the early 20th century. I remember
only the bigger engines as a child during the 1930s. Father was crewman
with uniform.

He was part of the team that designed the 6000 steam engines, used by Grand
Trunk and Canadian National. I still have the original factory pics as they
rolled off the line.

Just as a little bit of useless trivia, MB changed the position of the
keyswitch on RHD cars in the 90's.
In the 201 and 124's it was to the left of the steering wheel but the
202 and 210's onwards they put it to the right, which is how every other
car is.
Took a bit of getting used to when I bought my first Benz.

Did you vigorously shake the insert to get any trapped water
out of the solenoid plunger? They can get hydro-locked and
not move when/as they're supposed to. I did nothing but remove
and inspect a monovalve, and shake it out, and that restored
the heat in my wife's 560 SL.

What amuses me the most about the "cold air intake systems" is the
obvious lousy air-flow "design"-- fluids don't go around corners very
well, and I seem to remember 1 90 and three or four 45 degrees bends
in one on a newer Ford pickup.

That intake horn on my old 280 SE 4.5L probably makes a huge
difference in performance -- the opening is right in a high pressure
area behind the gap between the hood and the front fender, right
above the oil cooler, and that lovely venturi shape should increase
the velocity quite a bit,so that the air goes through the filter and
down the throttle body faster.

Re: [MBZ] Cars of the 70s - comparing gas GM to gas MercedesandVettes

2008-02-16 Thread Tom Hargrave
Carb icing is caused by a combination of events, starting with warm
humid air at just above freezing. As the air is pulled through the
venturi, the air temperature drops. The air temperature itself is not an
issue but without a heat source, the air cools the carb venturi down to
well below freezing. Then water vapor condenses on the surfaces in the
form of ice.

Carb heat was used well into the 50s to prevent icing in 32 - 38 degree
weather. Colder temperatures are not an issue because there is not
enough moisture in the air to cause icing. Even though your Chevy no
longer has the heat riser, it still has base heat from the exhaust
passage in the intake manifold and this heat source is warming your
carburetor & preventing icing.

Cars quit drawing air from behind the radiator in the 80s because under
hood temperatures had risen to the point where they were impacting
performance and economy. Corvette started drawing cold air from above
the top of the radiator in the 70s for the same reason.

I also get a kick out of the "cold air kits" that disable the factory
cold air intake & pull warm air from behind the radiator.

No. It's to get the carburetor to "operating temperature" a
quickly as possible to minimise the dreadful emissions at, and
just after, startup. The "heat riser" valve is closed to force
exhaust across the intake manifold. Once the intake is warm, it
opens and lets the exhaust flow normally.

I have driving more than 400,000 miles with small block Chevy's
with the heat riser removed in climates from 110F (45C) to -35F
(-38C). Carburetor has never frozen. The engine takes a bit

But it is a good thing. Is there any car made since the early

Re: [MBZ] Cars of the 70s - comparing gas GM to gas MercedesandVettes

2008-02-16 Thread Peter Frederick
Don't confuse manifold heating with intake air pre-heat -- a
carbureted engine runs like dog poop stone cold because there is no
significant fuel evaporation, and hence very poor ignition of the
mixture. The heat riser heats the MANIFOLD to reduce fuel pooling
and cause earlier significant vaporization so the mixture can be
leaned out sooner.

Intake air preheat keeps the temperature drop across from producing
icing and to give better fuel vaporization -- there is a valve in the
intake horn that pulls heated air from the exterior of the exhaust
manifold into the intake to maintain constant (or at least not too
cold) air temp. Works MUCH better than heating the bottom of the intake.

Stuck heat risers cause all sorts of problems, and today you won't
see them even on carbureted engines because the fuel is so much better.

[MBZ] Heat issue in '84 300D

2008-02-16 Thread Glenn Brown
As some of you may remember, I had posted a note after returning from a
Pbgh. Christmas trip when the heat disappeared after 1/2-1 hr. at interstate
speed and I had to keep turning the heat thumbwheel to MAX (i.e., past the
click) in order to get heat again. All I would get was maximum heat, and
the regulated heat would keeping reverting to no heat shortly after turning
the thumbwheel back to regulated temperature. I removed the monovalve to
see if there were any tears/holes in the rubber diaphragm . . . there were
none. The only thing I saw odd was that there was a small amount of crud of
some sort on the monovalve screen. For those who keep pointing me in the
direction of the heat recirculation hose, I changed this years ago, as well
as the in dash temp sensor. I just got back from a short trip where I was
averaging 50-55mph and the same thing occurred after ~ 35 min., so I may
just install a backup monovalve I've got to see if this resolves the
problem.

Ford used water heated carbs for many years & the plate was usually
seriesed with the cabin heater. The system did not work as well as GM's
solution for cold start-ups because it took longer for the water to heat
up.

A butterfly valve in the snorkel to draw air across the exhaust
manifold was also used, and would certainly help keep the carb
from icing, especially as the valve wasn't 100% efficient. My
Falcon has the heater core hose go through the carb mounting
plate, that's got to be purely for ice prevention. It doesn't
even have a snorkel. I don't think carbs nestled in the V of
the V8 engines had too much of an icing problem, there was
enough ambient heat to help prevent it.

Yes Gerry, one of my Great Grandfathers was an engineer, (driving them), and
my other Great Grandfather was a mechanical engineer, he (designed them).
He was part of the team that designed the 6000 steam engines, used by Grand
Trunk and Canadian National. I still have the original factory pics as they
rolled off the line.

[MBZ] Chicken wagonry

2008-02-16 Thread Jim Cathey
The right rear door check has been starting to bind, we've been
avoiding that door so as not to make the situation worse. So today I
opened it up. The replacement (used) check strap still looked OK, but
the grease had dried out in the track and there was some corrosion
starting up. I put it in the solvent tank while I had breakfast.

I then took it apart and cleaned off all the grease and dirt, and
found that one of the two large BB's was getting rough and corroded.
I put it in the angle of one of the welding magnets and brought it to
the wire wheel, and with some brushing and spinning I got it much
smoother. I then sanded off the tracks in the solvent tank, dried
everything off, and greased it all up. Getting it back together was
(as always) a real joy. It didn't go too badly, I used a woodworking
bar clamp to compress the BB's into the slider with it nearly in
starting position on the track, and then used a heavy iron bar and the
BFH to drive it into the track.

I put it into the door and tried it out. Not as smooth as new but
tolerable. I then reassembled the door, everything works fine now.

The engine takes a bit
longer to warm up, but the spark plugs on last a _lot_ longer!

But it is a good thing. Is there any car made since the early
'80 that did _not_ have a hose/pipe to draw engine intake air
from someplace other than behind the radiator?

The carb air heat was to prevent icing. I get a kick out of the K&N
crowd crowing about "cold air intakes" as if this were something
new. Have a carb freeze solid on you one time and you find out you
want that preheat, it gives you much better performance than sitting
on the side of the road wating for the ice to clear out of the carb!

The emissions systems were only complex in comparison to the "simple"
carb and mechanical advance point ignition system.

Re: [MBZ] Cars of the 70s - comparing gas GM to gas Mercedes andVettes

2008-02-16 Thread Peter Frederick
The lousy performance and horrible gas milage of the early 70's cars
was partially a result of nearly all the automotive companies bitter
battle to avoid ANY regulations, and they got caught with no real
engineered solution.

Gotta remember Detroit was in coast mode back then -- they spent much
more on fighting regulations than they did on improving their
products (in the 70's, most US cars were using carburetors developed
in the 30's and 50's -- hardly any changes) and GM in particular was
using old, worn out machinery to make engines. The latter is the
source of the "can't get it to idle smooth" Chevy V8 -- crankpins
were up to 0.030" off center (in any direction), lifter bores were up
to 10 degrees off vertical and up to -.0110" off center, rods were
highly variable in length, etc -- resulting in engines with different
valve and piston timing and compression in each cylinder. Cams were
sloppy, too, but not usually so bad. Rebuild to spec (called
"blueprinting" in the trade) and they turned out considerably more hp
and ran much cleaner. Imagine that, having all the cylinders produce
the same compression ratio, all the valve open the same amount with
the same timing, and having the piston at TDC at the correct time,
what an idea!

I don't think GM ever put valve guides or seat into the 350 -- just
drilled out the boss in the cast iron.

My brother remembers "cc-ing" Chrysler Hemi heads -- you had to grind
out the combustion chamber to make them all the same on racing
engine, else they shake themselves to death. I certainly hope
Chrysler fixed that in the current ressurection of the Hemi (that old
1951 design tarted up with EFI).

Took a few years for everyone to get a system that worked fairly
well. Chrysler was ahead of the game, simply because they didn't
have the cash to fight California in the mid 60's are started work
earilier (positive crankcase ventilation in about 1962, I think, EGR
with fixed ports in the bottom of the intake in 1972 in CA, etc).

And warm air to the air filter housing and intake manifold heat and ... there
was dozens of vacuum hoses running seemingly everywhere. Hoses that
cracked...and leaked after 40 or 50 k miles, not like the hard lines of the
80's and newer. Perhaps these systems were quite simple, but at the time, my
teenage mind was boggled by the apparent complexity of it all...

There was very little in the way of "vacuum emissions crap" on mid-70s cars
and what was installed was limited to the vacuum operated EGR valve and
ignition timing. The hoses & temperature sensors were used to disable the
EGR & timing modifications while the car was warming up & was actually a
clever low tech solution.

The EGR valve was & is still used to dump exhaust gas back into the engine
to reduce peak cylinder temperatures, which reduces NO2 emissions.

Mercedes used the same type systems in the 70s - so did everyone else.

Thanks in part to improved engine management through the use of computer
controls. The vacuum emissions crap on mid-seventies domestic autos was
horrific.

Re: [MBZ] W124 vent light?

2008-02-16 Thread Peter Frederick
One click past off to the left is the right side, two clicks left is
the left side. Been that way since at least the 60's.

Benz doesn't change things much -- I got a kick out of a friend who
had a W210 and complained that the keyswitch wasn't illuminated like
it was in his Ford -- until he looked in my old '72 W108 and realized
that Benz has put the keyswitch in exactly the same place relative to
the steering wheel since the mid '50s! No need to light it up, if
you drive a Benz they are all in the same place.

Doesn't. The warning only lights when it's _trying_ to turn
on any given light and it won't. (And the ignition is on.)
There's a memory for the brake and turn signal lights, IIRC.

Just as weird is the fact that Chelsea is one of the most expensive places
to live in London and most of their fans are CHAVS.
