Unscrew the retainer nut, as you guessed. It has two flats on it, just unscrew. The rubber seal will stay put, the nut is quite thin. Turn the radio on to drive the antenna up and pull the mast out as the motor runs. With luck, the entire nylon rack "tail" will come out. If not, you have

That Volvo TD with a five speed was a HOT car -- 0-60 in 9 seconds or something, quite fast for a 2.4L diesel. Probably got 33 mpg or better on the highway, too. My 740 with an automatic got 31-32 on the highway with the AC on, 29 mpg in town. Noisy turbo though. Peter _

MB never put a 5 speed behind a turbo diesel because it reduces the driveability. Yea it sounds like a good idea but everyone I have talked to that have done it was not happy with the results. After every shift, you got to wait for the turbo to spool back up again. Very sluggish. Tyler Backm

My experience is on a 240D - but they are pretty similar - Set the crank on TDC and the cam to it's TDC mark also - the trick is keeping the IP drive turning with the crank while you do all this. The case of the engine is pretty snug against the IP drive preventing the TC from jumping a IP driv
