I started using reusable bags in the late 1980s. Local store gave them away
(practically) and paid you two cents per bag every time you used them.
Twenty years later, they are as good as the day I purchased them.

I love going to the local store, having high school kids bag my groceries,
and saying, "Those bags are older than you are." Get some looks and some
"are you serious? -- that is so cool" comments.

Re: [MBZ] Steering Problem W123

2008-08-02 Thread Barry Stark
Larry -
I didn't see the original post but if the complaint is that you get more
assist to one side than to the other the problem is usually a broken spring
in the control valve. Replacements are not available from M/B as they are
matched to the box though you might get by with stealing a spring out of
another box and luck out that it is close enough. The control valve is
select fit to the bore so they are also not serviced separately. I had the
box in my SL rebuilt by a fellow that had all the tools and it came out just
like new. The play in these boxes results from too much axial play in the
bearings and the play is set back to new limits in a proper rebuild. You
really need to have the special tools to do those adjustments as you need to
be able to measure the running torques to set things up properly. Since you
have a spare box you might just try and swap out the broken spring, but if
your current box has a lot of play to boot I'd just swap out the whole box
and be done with it.

Well, the working piston would be what the high-pressure pushes
against to do the job. It might also have a valve in it, I dunno.
I've never heard of anybody successfully rebuilding a steering box,
or even trying. I only assume that we're really talking about a
failing control valve, as opposed to an over-tightened steering
box that's starting to jam up.

It's not that they can't be fixed, I'm sure, it's just that
nobody I know of ever does anything but replace them with a
better one.

I don't think new ones are available anymore, aren't Rusty's
(and everybody else's) factory rebuilds?

[MBZ] OT: From the desk of Lois Quam

2008-08-02 Thread Redghost
Partner in SWMBA office in MN thinks this is a good way to gather
some cash in the coming crash. Not sure how much is going for short
term, but need some cash for kid college fees coming up, so will be
taking advantage. Thought I should share the wealth for those
willing to cash out a car or two.

FYI, an interesting email from Lois Quam of Piper Jaffrey. Lois is a
very well respected executive and business leader in Minneapolis.
Especially intriguing is her description of the green economy as “the
mother of all economic opportunities.”

From: Quam, Lois [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sent: Friday, August 01, 2008 2:27 PM

Subject: From the desk of Lois Quam

To: My colleagues, old and new

Late last year, I joined Piper Jaffray and began to work on the green
economy after a career solely focused on health care. Since then I
have learned from leaders in financial services, the environmental
movement, and executives in traditional and renewable energy
industries. Everything I have learned has increased my enthusiasm and
desire to help lead us in a more sustainable direction.

Today, I want to share some themes that have emerged from my
learning. I also want to thank those of you who have helped me and to
say how much I look forward to continuing the journey together.

I am also delighted to announce that Doug Cameron, one of the
nation’s leading scientists in the green economy, is joining me at
Piper Jaffray. Doug was previously the Chief Scientist at Khosla
Ventures and before that at Cargill. At Piper, Doug will work with me
and the firm’s industry-leading clean technology and renewable energy
investment banking team in building the firm’s global franchise in
these areas of great social importance. He will also explore
alternative investments and other opportunities for the firm.

Here are some of the themes that have emerged over the past few months:

The building of the green economy is “the mother of all economic
opportunities” creating unprecedented opportunities across every part
of the global economy. These opportunities are vast in improved
energy efficiency, the retooling of existing industries through clean
technology, renewable energy and carbon negative products and services.

I am enclosing a speech I gave earlier this year in Pittsburgh at an
innovative conference hosted by the Steelworkers and the Sierra Club
that describes these opportunities in more detail.

These opportunities are enduring because they are being driven by
multiple, inter-related factors that will play out over the short,
medium and long term: the demand and supply of traditional fuels,
climate change, governmental action, consumer and business demand,
the growth of developing nations, and world population growth,

The comments in TIME magazine and the New York Times provide this
context as they commented on my career change.

Piper Jaffray Companies and its subsidiaries are at the heart of this
economic opportunity. Piper Jaffray has been the number one U.S.
clean technology underwriter since 2006, launched the first U.S.
based clean technology fund of funds, and recently expanded its U.S.
and China investment banking renewable energy team to Europe. Doug’s
arrival at the firm will add significantly to our capabilities and
reach, which is why I am so pleased that he has agreed to join us.

I am also working to link Minnesota with its significant capabilities
in the green economy to the global activities in this market. Over
the balance of this year, I will be visiting Norway, Britain, the
Middle East, Hong Kong and China with Piper colleagues to help
develop these synergies and accelerate the growth we are already
experiencing in these areas. .

I would be interested in your views on these issues and please be in
touch if we have opportunities to work together.

Yours Sincerely,

Lois Quam

Be sure to make sure the radiator fins are clean. It's amazing how a little
bit of crud can make such a big difference in the radiator's ability to
cool...

Remember, donating to a non-profit only means that you are not paying
  income
tax on the value of the item. In other words, you aren't getting the
  $5000
back, you are just not paying taxes on the $5000 and at 17%, that's
  only
$850.00. You'd be cash ahead selling the car for $1000.

I'd be interested but I'm probably too far away.

Andrew, if you go for that you might also want to claim charitable mileage for
the one way trip with the TD and a two way trip with whatever you drive up to

[MBZ] Steering Problem W123

2008-08-02 Thread LarryT
Howdy -
Looks like the Control Vallve is causing the steering to be powered assisted
when turning to left only - while when turning to the right it is assisted
as it should be.

After looking at the Work Shop Manual it appears the control Valve comes out
while the rest of the box stays in the car. I'm doing a bit of "assuming"
here BTW. The manual showed what they call a "Working Piston" - they also
show a "Control Valve" in another spot. I'm assuming they are both control
valves.

Anyway, there's pn 39 - a "Slot Nut" which says 200-240Nm under the
comments - which I take to be the Torque Value. It's in there pretty darned
tight! There's also pn 39a called a Hex Nut and under comments it says
Special Tool # 126 XXX or 123 XXX.

Questions - can the control valve be rebuilt? is it sold seperately? Found
a used box for $45. - no guarantees other than it will work - if not they'll
send another -

My current box is a little loose - I dislike tightening the bolt as it makes
it wear much faster and feels funny when centering. But I have snugged it
up a little to remove some play. The rubber joint is good btw -

Anyway, can the control valve be removed and replaced with the box in the
car?

Any other problems I;m overlooking?

Thx - BTW - it's a 78 240D 123.123.12.050680 with approx 300k

2008-08-02 Thread tom tomscat

Hi Andrew,
I hope the info was useful for you. The car donation program has been a lot of
fun for us,
not to mention financially helpful to the program: New England Adolescent
Treatment Center, Inc. (NEAT)
Groton CT. We are very grateful to those generous folks who have donated to
us. The program provides
many benefits:  it rids the community of many junk cars; it helps recycle cars;
it helps our kids learn some
life skills, along with perhaps piquing their interest in a car hobby or
vocation; it provides a community service
helping the less fortunate obtain transportation for work, etc; and it provides
a tax benefit to those
who donate. win-win-win. My son always reminds me that... if we can teach a
kid to fix a car in this automotive oriented society...
he'll never starve. He can go anywhere and find a job.

[MBZ] One less rust hole - 240D update

2008-08-02 Thread Curt Raymond
The '83 240D we call Hammie had a hole through the trunk floor on the
passenger's side. There had been a matching one on the left side years ago I'd
fiberglassed into shape. 5 years later and the fiberglass still looks good.
Now I can weld though, so I cut out all the bad metal which was a surprisingly
small amount, I couldn't get my hand through the hole. Then commenced to
welding.
I'll say that those who say welding is a matter of practice are right just
about every tack weld I make now is a good one. I do still blow through badly
if I try to run a bead so mostly I just make a series of tacks very close
together and then tack over the spaces. It doesn't even look too terrible now.

This was a much worse job than my 190D since part of the wheel arch had rotted
too so I had to create part of that lip. I did it by essentially making a box
that I then welded into place. Its not great but once I skim it with bondo
it'll blend in pretty well. I've got some special POR-15 bondo that should do
the job nicely. I was racing rain today so I got it welded up, slapped on some
paint so it wouldn't rust and left it.

While I was at it I took time to lubricate the throttle linkages under the
hood. I have no idea what Devin did to them but they looked as if somebody had
poured salt water over just that area... I took all the ball joints apart and
shot some SeaFoam Deep Creep into the sockets. That stuff is lousy penetrant
but seems to be a decent lubricating oil. I also lubed all the pivot points
which all in all seems to have fixed the issue.

So now with the exception of freeing up the parking brake the car is basically
roadworthy. It still looks like hell with the holey hood and many rust spots
but we're getting there

Anybody got a corded 120v impact wrench? I've yet to get a compressor yet for
my 5 year anniversry at work they've given me a $100 Amazon gift card.
For just over $100 I see several options for electric impact wrenches. I'm
thinking one would be handy. They seem to come from about 240 lb/ft to about
350. That seems to be about the same as a 3/8" air impact wrench is capable of
although I see the 1/2" air guns go much higher...

Re: [MBZ] OT: tool booty

2008-08-02 Thread Curt Raymond
Portage lake is a good 45 minutes north of Presque Isle. Beautiful road coming
down to the lake. Theres an old dance hall and restaurant "Deans" which is sort
of the anchor for the whole town and has been forever.

Most of the time going up there involves driving woods roads that are owned by
the paper company. I took my wife up one time to visit a friend who owned camps
on Eagle Lake. We had my old '88 GMC 1500 pickup. We came around a blind corner
and a log truck was coming the other way haulin about 100,000# and goin to beat
hell. Its his road so I put the old GMC into the bushes while flailing around
to find the shifter to get into 4x4 before we were stuck. We came out of the
bushes with the mud just flyin everywhere. My wife HATES the woods road and
that road (the High Meadow road) in particular now.

Anyway, I'm from Caribou, the next town (well city really) north of Presque
Isle.

Has the engine had the green anti-freeze in it? With one exception
(the SDL), all of the MBs I've bought that have had the green stuff
have needed new radiators within two years. I've replaced thermostats,
flushed with citric acid, replaced fan clutches, had the radiator

The junkyard? No. I'd sent an email offering $80 and I'd pick up the hood but
they never responded, I didn't really expect them to.

My plan was to go there and waggle $60 under his nose and see if he'd bite.
I'll try again Friday.

The junkyard that has a 240D hood is apparently "by appointment only"
on
Saturdays... G... So fortunately I think I can get out of work a little
early on Friday, I'd love to get a new hood on this car sooner than later.

I did make a stop at my favorite store "Stuff and Things" and pick up
some
new cutting wheels and a couple flapper sanding discs so I can start in on
the rust on the car. I also bought a 3/8" u-joint socket so I can finally
get the parking brake arm bolted all the way back on.

The management committee of the New England Davison of Okiebenz Intl. (Curt

in Warwick RI. We have reserved tables 36-39 with our own parking area for
Star photo ops. http://www.riparks.com/goddard.htm .

We will have coffee and Dunkin Donuts (What else?) there about 10 AM. We
will eat around 1PM. We will have homemade Chowdah made from freshly dug
Narragansett Bay Quahogs, as well as a grill and fire pits for grilling
animal, vegetable, mineral etc. More details to follow once we get an idea
of how many might attend.

If you think you might attend please let me know as soon as you can so we
can finalize planning. Non-New Englanders are also welcome if you'd like to
take a nice early fall drive that day from wherever. (Or if you want to fly
in, this is not far from T F Greene airport and there is a local car rental
company that advertises MB convertible rentals.) Let me know if you have
questions about logistics.

Some SL(C) hoods were aluminum, as were some SEC hoods. Mostly not,
I would think. Certainly not on a 240D. I'm thinking your sap found
some preexisting pinholes in the paint and migrated through. And
the sap's hygroscopic nature also brought in water which did the
dirty deed.

The junkyard that has a 240D hood is apparently "by appointment only" on

early on Friday, I'd love to get a new hood on this car sooner than later.

I did make a stop at my favorite store "Stuff and Things" and pick up some
new cutting wheels and a couple flapper sanding discs so I can start in on
the rust on the car. I also bought a 3/8" u-joint socket so I can finally
get the parking brake arm bolted all the way back on.

[MBZ] 240 hood - strange spots

2008-08-02 Thread Wilton Strickland
'Bout 15 years ago, I was washing my 80 240D one day and discovered 3 little
spots of a clear substance that I thought was terpentine (pine sap) on top
of the hood. My thought was that wife had parked under a pine tree, which
had dripped sap onto the hood. One spot was ~1/4 inch dia., the others
smaller. I didn't have any solvent handy right then, so I delayed removing
the spots. Few days later, I had the solvent and started to remove the
"terpentine" spots, but discovered that the substance had "gone through" the
paint, i. e., the paint had taken the shape of the original spots that I saw
but appeared to be undamaged other than having taken on the raised shape of
the substance. When I first saw the spots they were clear/colorless - I
could readily see that they were lying on the surface of the paint. 'Few
days later when I started to clean them off, the paint was on TOP of the
substance - the paint had assumed the shape of the spots! Then, I couldn't
clean the spots off without cutting the paint away. Because I couldn't get
to the substance without cutting holes in the paint, I delayed doing
anything. Several months later, the hood had little holes in it where the
spots had been. 'Still like that when uninsured driver suddenly made left
turn across in front of wife coupla yrs later, totaling the 240D. Any idea
what the substance on the hood was? It was something that went through the
paint without visible damage to the paint and then ate holes in the metal
hood, which I think may have been aluminum - not sure.

Re: [MBZ] Donating a vehicle

2008-08-02 Thread tom tomscat

Hi,

I run a a 501 (c) 3 charitable organization, and we have been operating a car
donation fund raising program for the past couple of years. My agency is a
small residential facility for adolescent males in Ct. We have probably
processed over 200 cars in that time.

The IRS rules changed in January 2005. A donor can deduct up to $500 (under
Schedule A Itemized Deductions--- if you don't itemize, check with your
accountant to see if you can claim a deduction) for a donated vehicle with an
acknowledgement from the donee noting the donation and the proceeds realized.

In order to deduct MORE than $500, certain conditions must be met:

1) the charity actually realizes proceeds of more than $500 from the sale of
the vehicle, after any expenses incurred in fixing it up before sale. In this
case, the charity is required to send a completed Form 1098-C to the donor,
within a month, stating the proceeds of the sale, less any expenses incurred.
That number is the amount that the donor can deduct on Schedule A. The charity
is also required to send a copy of this Form 1098-C to the IRS, listing the
donor and the donor's Social Security or Tax ID.

OR

2) the charity uses the vehicle in its 'agency mission". In other words, the
vehicle is NOT resold, or is resold at below market value to a needy family,
for example. Again the charity is required to complete a 1098-C, as above, and
send it to both the donor and the IRS. The charity states the disposition of
the vehicle, and lists the Kelley Blue Book PRIVATE PARTY VALUE of the vehicle
at the time of the disposition. That number is the amount that the donee may
deduct on Schedule A. The charity must follow certain guidelines to meet the
IRS criteria for 'agency mission'.

In my case, we have done all of the above over the past couple of years with
our donated vehicles. Many of the donations are not servicable any more, and
we arrange for those to go directly to auction, where they are mostly snapped
up by salvage yards and parts dealers. We have taken several vehicles into
'agency mission service': e.g., right now I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee Classic
in great shape that we use on a daily basis at the agency. I have a number of
servicable donated vehicles for sale currrently, priced from as little as $150
to as much as $4200. I have had a several Mercedes donated, including a 1984
230CE Euro project car, and a couple of W123s.

Since I have a house full of adolescent males, including some budding
gearheads, we are also beginning to use the donated vehicles as part of an
incentive program: youths can work toward earning ownership of a vehicle upon
graduation, and along the way they can learn about it and work on it. Since
this is incorporated into our life skills development program, it meets the
criteria for 'agency mission'. A true win-win-win for the donor, the donee and
the kids. Needless to say, it has generated considerable excitement among our
population of teenage males!

Additionally, we are using one donated vehicle (at present) in a community
service project for the agency. We have a 1991 Volvo 240 wagon that our kids
will make some minor repairs to, clean it up, etc, and then we, in turn, wiil
seek out a needy local family and give the car to them. It's a way for our
kids to learn to give back to those less fortunate. Kind of a "Habitat for
Humanity' with cars. This too has generated considerable interest among the
youths in the program, as well as allowing the donor to realize the full
allowable IRS deduction.

We find that most donors are not making the donation for the tax write-off, but
rather they simply have a car they need to get rid of, or have no further use
for, and they find they can't get much for it in a trade. They would just as
soon have it do someone some good. Plus they don't want the hassle of selling
it themselves.

The bottom line is that the donation is a tax deduction, NOT a tax CREDIT.
Most people would probably get a better return, if that is their primary
objective, by selling the car for cash, assuming one can find a buyer.

Our program accepts donations of any car, truck, RV or boat, regardless of
condition, and regardless of location. I urge people to donate locally where
possible. Small local charities are often able to get a better bang out of a
donated buck, with all due respect to the large, and certainly deserving,
national charities, like the American Cancer Society, etc.

I have written this rather hurriedly in between Saturday chores, so please
contact your accountant if you have any questions about any of the above in
case I have overlooked something.

have needed new radiators within two years. I've replaced thermostats,
flushed with citric acid, replaced fan clutches, had the radiator
cleaned and "rebuilt", but a new radiator was the only thing that
brought the temps in line. YMMV ---

It won't be that way on CNN when Senator Obama gets elected. What you are
seeing now is President Bush hating news, everything is bad and wrong. When
President Obama is in power, everything will be good and wonderful, if its
not, then, its the fault of someone else.

Watch Fox News, fair and balanced.

[MBZ] Anybody want a cheap 300E?

2008-08-02 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
Got a cheap 300E Im getting ready to sell. Its an 86 silver with
burgandy tex. I have been driving it back and forth to work all week
and have not had any problems at all. Its got a little over 200K on it.
Starts great, runs great, no noise or smoke. Tranny shifts just like
it should. Suspension is great, no noise or vibration. Goes down the
road straight, does not seem to pull or anything. The AC works, the
climate control works, the cruise works, the sunroof works, even the
popup works. All the windows work. It has a dent in the RF fender
which could probably be popped out to look better, or those fenders are
easy to replace. Has a small dent in the front edge of the hood by the
drivers side headlight, and also the bumper is cracked in that area.
What happened is the PO forgot to put the car in park, and it rolled
into a pole. Broke the headlight, cracked bumper, little dent in the
hood. I have replaced the headlight and have a bumper available if a
person was interested. Paint is pretty decent but does have some fading
on the hood a little and the roof top. Not really that bad though.
Interior is also in fairly decent shape. Has typical wear spot on the
drivers seat. Power seats also work, even the knobs are not broken off.

It has a BRAND NEW fuel pump, replaced the headlight, new drivers front
window regulator, new drivers front door check. Going to get it cleaned
up and get some pictures off it this weekend hopefully. $1500. If
anybody is interested let me know. Would have posted earlier but gave a
list member first choice and cheaper price on it. Never heard back so
now its opened up to the whole list. Will be putting it on craigs list
etc in a few days.

[MBZ] 190D cooling fan clutch

2008-08-02 Thread Curt Raymond
Back a couple years ago I'd noticed that the electric clutch on the fan on my
'85 190D doesn't work. Marshall and beaten me up to troubleshoot it more before
calling the clutch bad but the other day when adding oil I noticed that the PO
had siliconed the fan to the clutch. I poked around and when the engine is hot
there is DEFINATELY power at the clutch. The car will occasionally run a mite
hot when creeping along in heavy traffic. Part of it is needing a coolant flush
which will happen once I get the Quantum but in the mean time:
Has anybody ever done the electric fan clutch? Rusty's site says $222. Are used
ones available?
I'd like to get this all sorted before my wife starts driving the car full time.

I think you've hit on something with the news coverage. Ever sit and
watch CNN, or the others for a couple of hours? You end up feeling
anxious and worried. They report 95% "bad news" all the time.

I stopped watching all that crap about 2 years ago. I was something

[MBZ] No hood for me today

2008-08-02 Thread Curt Raymond
The junkyard that has a 240D hood is apparently "by appointment only" on
Saturdays... G... So fortunately I think I can get out of work a little
early on Friday, I'd love to get a new hood on this car sooner than later.

I did make a stop at my favorite store "Stuff and Things" and pick up some new
cutting wheels and a couple flapper sanding discs so I can start in on the rust
on the car. I also bought a 3/8" u-joint socket so I can finally get the
parking brake arm bolted all the way back on.

Re: [MBZ] Donating a vehicle

2008-08-02 Thread dave walton
If you donate it to a charity it will be sold to a dealer at auction
that will try try to sell it for twice what it is worth to someone who
can't afford to fix it. You are better off selling it to someone that
needs it with full disclosure, then donate the money you get to the
charity of your choice. The charities only get at best 30% of what the
car brings at auction anyway. It's free money for them so they don't
complain much.

I think you should sell it to Kaleb for $500 :-)

Re: [MBZ] Donating a vehicle

2008-08-02 Thread Tom Hargrave
You are required to declare "market value" for the vehicle and if audited
you may need to justify the value, particularly if it's more than the
average car would sell for in your area.

The best thing to do is to print and save a copy of the blue book printout.
"High balling - building a file of only over priced cars that are for sale
on the net" will just piss off your IRS auditor and they will come back at
you with a market based "real value".

Remember, donating to a non-profit only means that you are not paying income
tax on the value of the item. In other words, you aren't getting the $5000
back, you are just not paying taxes on the $5000 and at 17%, that's only
$850.00. You'd be cash ahead selling the car for $1000.

I'd be interested but I'm probably too far away.

Thanks,

The way I understand what is written is

1. If you donate a car worth more than 500 bucks and they give it to some one
in need or use it, you get to deduct your cost basis (what you have in the car)
or fair market value, whichever is less.

2. If you donate a car worth more than 500 bucks and they sell the car or
auction it off, you get to deduct what they sold the car for, your cost basis
(what you have in the car) or fair market value, whichever is less.

Perhaps one of our esteemed esquires on this list can read the above document
and expound on it, but that is the way I interpret what is written.

Caveats,
YMMV

I hate to use this but...
Gonna ban all knives in Canada now? I'm amazed that nobody stopped this. I see
somebody getting stabbed the stabber is gonna have to answer and dammed quick.
I always carry a knife.

Granted my little swiss army knife isn't gonna do much but I'm not going to
wait around while somebody's head gets cut off.

So, did y'all hear about the guy on the Greyhound bus? One passenger flipped
out and stabbed another to death and
then cut his head right off. Happened a couple of nights ago about 50 miles
west of us. I know lots of odd balls
ride the buses but jeepers. This sort of takes the cake.

There are times, in winter, when I'd agree with you about the latitude.
There are times, in summer, when I would not.

Oh yeah, and let us not forget some pretty significant signs
of civilization: a long-time Mercedes dealership (ensuring a
strong local supply) and a U-Pull (where many of them end up)!

Presque Isle, Maine sported one of the first nuclear missle sites capable of
shooting a "Snark" at the USSR. It has a university too. Definately the middle
of nowhere though...

What are you looking for?  Mind you the deals aren't
stellar, it's just that at half the asking price they're
now somewhat reasonable.

> Drive out to the middle of nowhere, WA

Spokane is not usually considered (by the rational) as the
'middle of nowhere'.  I wouldn't think that anyplace that
sported multiple universities, a major airport, nuclear
weaponry, and a good symphony would be considered that.
Presidents, etc., have occasionally visited on campaign
stops.  I think Her (would-be-)Royal Clinton was the last
one such.

The nukes probably went away with the B-52's.  Maybe that
took us off the map, so to speak?

I wouldn't, however, make the trip just to visit one
going-out-of-business pawn shop!
