The Humpty Dumpty Economy By Peter Schiff

Euro Pacific Capital, Inc.
Friday, 14 November 2008

Before the current economic crisis became apparent to all, the most popular
fable used to describe America’s uncanny economic resiliency was the story of
Goldilocks. It was argued that our economy was skipping down a sunny path of
moderate growth, low inflation and rising asset prices. However, a much better
parable for our economy over the last decade would have been the story of Humpty
Dumpty: a bloated, fragile shell perched on the top of a dangerously high stone
wall. This week, all the government’s horses and all of its men scrambled to put
Humpty Dumpty back together again. Here is a look at some of this week’s highlights:

The Mother of all Moral Hazards

No doubt prodded by the administration, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac announced a
new attempt to stop the fall in home prices and foreclosures through a loan
modification program that would cap mortgage payments so that a homeowner’s
total housing expenses would not exceed 38% of household income for home owners
who are 90 days delinquent.

In a classic case of unintended consequences, the plan will encourage a massive
new round of delinquencies and household income reduction as homeowners will
jump through hoops to qualify for the program and maximize their benefit. Those
who could conceivably economize to meet their existing obligations will now have
a strong reason to forego such sacrifices. Those who are not 90 days past due
will intentionally become so. In many cases, dual income families may decide to
eliminate one job altogether as reduced mortgage payments combined with lower
child care and other work related expenses will likely exceed the after-tax
value of the lost paycheck.

Unfortunately, the last thing our economy needs is falling household incomes and
even more bad debt. But that is precisely what this plan will give us.

To Bail or Not to Bail

With the Big Three auto makers now in a plainly visible death spiral, the
automotive bailout debate is kicking into overdrive. The disagreement hinges on
whether a bailout is necessary to support an important industry or whether the
unprofitable dinosaurs of the past should be allowed to fail as America focuses
on an information-age, service sector, and alternative energy future.

As usual, both sides have it wrong. The government should let the Big Three fail
not because we no longer need an auto industry, but because we desperately do.
What we do not need is the bloated, inefficient auto industry that we have
today. By allowing the Big Three to fail, their capacity will be turned over to
new owners who will be able to acquire the means of production at fire sale
prices and hire workers at globally competitive wages. The result will be a more
efficient auto industry making cars that people around the world actually want
to buy at prices they can afford. Such auto makers could conceivably be
profitable and could become the cornerstone of a manufacturing renaissance in
the United States. In contrast, Ford, Chrysler and GM are never ending money
pits that threaten to swallow a good deal of our economy.

We Shopped and Dropped

This week, the bankruptcy filing by Circuit City and a profit warning from Best
Buy, served as proof positive that America’s national shopping spree is over. As
I have long said, the business model of importing cheap goods for Americans to
buy with credit cards was unsustainable. We were told to “Shop till we dropped,”
and we did.

Americans two primary sources of spending money, home equity extractions and
unlimited credit card availability, have been shut down. With only dwindling
paychecks to rely on, Americans are justifiably economizing. As a result, many
more retailers will file for bankruptcy over the next few years, and those that
remain solvent will only do so by drastically cutting their capacity.

In a desperate move to arrest this necessary process, Treasury Secretary Paulson
announced his intention to use part of the $700 billion TARP (Troubled Asset
Recovery Program) funds to re-liquefy consumer lending.

Paulson observed that “illiquidity is raising the cost and reducing the
availability of car loans, student loans, and credit cards”, “creating a heavy
burden on the American people” and reducing jobs. While all of this is true,
this is precisely what needs to happen. Americans need to reduce their spending
on all of these things, and market forces are in the process of bringing that
change about. By encouraging even more borrowing, Paulson’s plan will aggravate
the crisis.

Along those lines, our nation’s various bank regulators issued a joint press
release this week that “encouraged” banks to make more loans and to reduce their
lending standards if need be. Since lax lending standards

I use it a fair amount, I like that with it the wood that's

Way behind (on digest) but catching up...

My method: put front end up on jackstands, position drain pan under pwr
strg box, remove plug for the centering bolt, turn wheels off center.
Remove the reservoir cap, all the fluid runs out of the box.

Refill does take some time as there will be a lot of air to work out of
the system by turning the wheels lock to lock.

He sure got it right, however looking in retrospect you could probably
find someone who "predicted" every major market move before it happened.

I really like his message that we really need to let this recession
happen and get it over with, that sometimes medicine "tastes bad" but
you have to take it, in fact I used almost that same analogy in a
conversation with a friend a couple of weeks ago.

Meddling by the government in the form of bail-outs and other
interference with what the market NEEDS to do (correct itself) is only
going to make things ultimately much worse.

You obviously have never been in the ER with a kid how died an hour
earlier - bleed to death form the bruising all over his body (1 yr.
old), or the under 1 yr. old girl with her vagina torn wide open by
the live-in boy friend, or the kids with electrical burns from
extension cords all over their arms, legs, and back, arms and legs
broken by a baseball bat, etc.
You are dealing with a very minor incident relative to what that
worker deals with every day.
You have no perspective at all.
Are you real?

I see a 440ML and a few I don't recognize on Amazon.
They only list one Linear Contact model and it's not available. I wonder how
hard it would be to get a stylus for my brown LC cartridge these days.

Lots of Shure with familiar model numbers on Amazon (92E, 97xE, etc) but no V15.
Black Grado is $60.

My turntable was an accessory to my tape deck. Any record I bought after 1985
has only been played once or twice. Dub it to a chrome tape with Dolby C and
archive the vinyl. Which means my stylus probably has less than 100 hours on it.

Re: [MBZ] The simple things in life. :-)

2008-11-14 Thread Jim Cathey

Until your kid gets ahold of it, puts a small scratch on it and renders
it entirely useless. That's happened to me with at least 3 of their
DVD

movies but they've NEVER been able to ruin a VHS cassette.

Tapes are easy to ruin, but the hard shell protects them
from a whole lot of casual abuse. My first CD player (and
still working) doesn't mind the odd scratch, as it doesn't
have a computer in it. You push play and it starts spinning,
you push FF and it moves the head. You can scan the head off
the end of the recorded area if you want.

DVD's are hopeless, though. CD's, predating computing
if you will, aren't necessarily. Just try finding a media
reader nowadays that doesn't insist on a good table of contents
track though!

Well, good 35mm film has higher resolution equivalence than that,
and most magazines rarely wanted something as crappy as 35mm images

Then I happened to mention this to Chuck, he tells me to stop by tomorrow and
we'll go get a sticker on it.
So tomorrow I put on my grubbies and head down to the snowmobile shop where
Chuck works. Give him my key and some money and take over whatever hes doing.
When he gets back I'll have a sticker. He says its no problem as long as the
check engine light isn't on. I told him he'd have to find a 'check engine'
light to put in the car before it could come on...

Re: [MBZ] OT: How to get dried wood glue off a carpenter's square

2008-11-14 Thread E M
If the square is metal, maybe try using a carpenter's razor blade at a low
angle. Watch your fingers though. ;-) You can pick up a box of 5 for a
couple of bucks at any hardware shop. I always keep a few in my toolbox.
Great for getting dried paint off glass too.

Re: [MBZ] Magazines accept film images, was Cameras

2008-11-14 Thread LarryT

Dan -
You can probably help me with your experience shooting for magazines - I
wrote an artcle for Excellence magazine (changeover to EFI) and submitted
images done with my Nikon digital at its highest setting - of 1632x1224
pixels. After the editor asked for higher resolution I told him I shot at
the that resolution - he didn;t respond and used the images I provided -
what more could I do? Isn't that pretty high?

Or has it all gone to digital?

I assume you mean "medium format:" 6x4.5, 6x6, and 6x7. The magazines I
shoot for (mostly Better Homes and Gardens titles, but others as well)
prefer digital now, as the workflow is simpler and cheaper--no high-def
film scanning required. I've not submitted a 6x6 chrome in years, but I'm
sure they'd take 'em with no complaint if offered. They still use a lot
of older "pickup" images that are film, so the capability to deal with it
is still there. Most food photography is still shot large format
film--5x7--in order to get selective focus and perspective correction--so
they still deal with a lot of new film, too. Not as much medium format
film as large format, though, as almost all pros now shoot medium format
with digital backs.

Well, then I was right on the money. I offered him $2000 and then raised it
$2100 and finally $2200. I didn't think about the fact that it was a 2.6. I
wonder if that might make him come down. The funny thing is, when I looked at
the engine (in the picture) I could tell it wasn't a M103 (3.0). I actually
thought it looked like the M104.

Well, Kaleb, I think you and I are about the same age and I don't have to go as
far back as my father for this same scenario. My 7th Grade math teacher would
do this. He would throw chalk. He was a college baseball pitcher at Mizzou (Go

He was a college baseball pitcher at Mizzou (Go
TIGERS!) and he could really bean someone. The funny thing was, it was a very
effective method. He also would make people stand for the whole hour if they
were late. You know what happened? We all paid attention and we were never
late and I really liked him as a teacher (and I hate math).

Parents used to be a lot less tolerant of behavioral problems at
school, too. Now many parents consider it the school's responsibility
to handle it. I've actually heard several parents say "deal with it"
when approached by a teacher about problems with their child.

I've made it crystal clear to my kids that if they cause a problem at
school, what the teacher or principal decides to do will only be a
warm up compared to what they'll get from home.

No accounting for taste. (Just like there are those on this list who
moon over 124s and those who think they're hideous compared to a 123

2008-11-14 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
My dad used to tell us stories about when he was in school, if you fell
asleep at your desk, the teacher would throw a piece of chalk at you.
That would wake you up. I think they need to get back to such things
then kids would pull their head out of their asses, my included.

together and complained to the principal. The errant teacher was sent
packing soon thereafter. I even remember the brutish teacher's name - Mr.
Osman.

Until your kid gets ahold of it, puts a small scratch on it and renders
it entirely useless. That's happened to me with at least 3 of their DVD
movies but they've NEVER been able to ruin a VHS cassette.

Tapes and vinyl don't suffer that problem, it takes a LOT of damage to
render them unusable.

have VHS tapes that were taped from TV (F1 races) starting in late
84/early 85 - in a utility room containing the heating system - it was
open to the crawl space - they were out there for over 20 years before I
brought them inside. They played as though they had been recorded

Of course we eventually HAD to go to DVD/CD ROM to to use them with

First time since getting the 300E a couple of years ago, I used the tape
player today. :-)

I went down to the basement, and rummaged through an old box of tapes.
Most

went in the garbage years ago and have been replaced with CDs. So, I was
happily motoring along today, listening to some of those oldies. Good to
hear the click as it reverses sides, haven't heard that in years.
Amazing

how well the audio quality has remained on the tapes too!!

Almost a current model - it's a Nissan Figaro - you see them in the UK
from time to time - 5 to 10 years old, they are an example of the
Japanese K-Car, or city car.

Due to high population density in cities like Tokyo, with restrictions
on parking spaces, small cars are very popular, and tax-advantageous,
leading to a entire, and large, class of quirky, stylish, small engine
displacement, short length cars - some were / are whizzy turbo-charged
fun packages - often they find their way to the UK

Re: [MBZ] OT: your government at its absolute finest

2008-11-14 Thread andrew strasfogel
When I was in 5th grade, my NYC school teacher knocked us around
(physically) a lot. I distinctly remember him pushing me to the
(hard) floor and glowering over me for something I had done (it wasn't
anything flagrant that I had committed). After that, the parents banded
together and complained to the principal. The errant teacher was sent
packing soon thereafter. I even remember the brutish teacher's name - Mr.
Osman.

Re: [MBZ] Beautiful 140 Coupe

2008-11-14 Thread E M
There is one around here which looks to be very nice too. A S600 coupe, but
the asking price is $22,000. Ofcourse, no way he'll ever get that kind of
money for it, the car has simply fallen out of fashion with most, much like
old Porsche 928s. Still, I think they're fantastic cars, but I'm sure cost
a fortune to run and keep them in the shape they deserve to be kept.

I love all my old vinyl. I need to get a new cartridge though the one I
have is crapola. Any recommendations? I'm not an audiophile so I need
something decently good but still affordable. Does Shure still make
them?
