Re: [MBZ] Anybody in Houston?

2009-04-15 Thread drcscruggs
I live near Houston (Galveston). I agree that Goode Company has good BBQ.?
There are a lot of good restaurants in Houston, one of my favorites is
Carraba's.? If you like seafood, consider the drive down to Galveston to go to
Gaido's.? It has been around since about 1900 and I have never been
disappointed.? If you let me know, I will try to join you at one of them.? The
woodlands is about 65 miles from Galveston and 20 from Goode Co BBQ.? There is
a Carraba's (Italian) not too far from the woodlands.? BTW got a 96 e300diesel
just yesterday, has about 127k on it and looks pretty good.? I think I am happy
with it.? Was not under 1000 though!?

The torque converter will slowly leak down on sitting, and this

2009-04-15 Thread Wonko the Sane
I was "on the list" for CPO, with 6 years service, when I went to OCS. Only
wore the E6 collar devices, but E7 would have been about the same time as I
pinned on gold bars

I was fortunate enough to be in at a time when avionics techs got promoted
really quickly. Had to re-enlist at four years to pin on E6 (mandatory
service obligation associated with a promotion). My neighbor (Air Force) hit
E5 at the 18 year mark, and he was a pretty bright guy working the local
PAVE PAWS site looking for Soviet incoming.

In retrospect, OCS was probably the dumbest career move I've ever made. I'd
easily have had my choice of E9 or CWO4 by the 15 year mark, and I'd
probably still be on active duty (with 34 years service). Once you are an E9
or a CWO4, why get out? It is sort of like being God, without all that
universe-ruling responsibility.

Should be a fun base tour.

Watch the body language and interactions when he meets a junior officer on
base and salutes. If you watch the eyes, you will see you son-in-law
saluting because that is required, and the junior officer will return the
salute with a "thank you for what you have taught me" look in his eyes.

All bets are off if the junior officer graduated from New London, in which
case he is much too full of himself to appreciate that he owes any CPO he
encounters a giant dose of gratitude for keeping him from hurting himself,
from hurting others, and from urinating on his shoes while he makes the
transition from University classroom to the real world.

If the junior officer says "Hi, Chief" ask him what his enlisted rate was
prior to OCS.

Yea -- we share that history, don't we?

I loved being a 31 year old Ensign with three rows of ribbons topped off
with enlisted Air Crew wings [http://usmcshop.grunt.com/prodimg/15240.jpg].
Those who were clueless sort of stared in confusion, and those who
understood smiled.

And that, boys and girls, is why Wilton is still with us.

I normally use "please stop talking, I really need to concentrate here" --
but the "shut up" phrase ... well, I made that error only once early in our
marriage and won't ever go there again. It was ugly.

This sort of conversation between Debbie and I normally occurs when she has
found a Linux bug on her laptop that no one else has previously encountered
-- certainly no one who knows how to post to a web site or Linux users group
once they resolve the error. Debbie should be making big bucks as an alpha
or beta tester for RedHat or Debian -- if it can be broken, she will find
the way to do it -- and normally during the last two minutes of a score-tied
football game involving the Steelers, the Packers, or Virginia Tech.

Eventually. :) Starting small and working up to it, but the ultimate
project I'm working towards will be a preamp with a tube-based analog
signal path and a digital section as well, to switch inputs remotely,
display status info on a small dot-matrix display, etc. Schematics
for tube amps are readily available, of course, as long as I can avoid
frying myself. The digital stuff will be driven by an Arduino or
similar microcontroller---there is plenty of free code on the web and
info on how to receive and process infrared signals from an ordinary
universal remote control, then control the analog stuff via relays
etc. The part that will probably take the longest is building a nice
housing!

ABSOLUTELY! Prevention and avoidance is always going to be plan "A". But
where saving my and my family's skins is the goal I want a plan "B" and "C"
for when plan "A" cannot be implemented. I am a highly defensive driver,
assuming that the other driver is going to make the stupid dangerous choice.
I am always thinking about where my escape route is when things go wrong.
But there is always the possibility of something happening that goes too
fast for human reaction times.

That is where a Panzer of a Benz or a full size Crown Vic will save your

Boy, do I feel especially stupid! No one warned me that after you're
retired awhile, the gray matter takes at least 24H to function properly. I
got to thinking about the 10.3V reading from my '84 300D battery (4Y old)
and wondered if possibly the glow plug timer relay buzzing effect was caused
by not enough juice to over-ride the internal spring in the relay, so I
hooked up the battery from my SL (~2-3Y old - 11.4V) and the diesl started
fine. So I guess there is a minimum voltage at which the glow plug timer
won't operate. I got a new battery installed and all is fine. Thanx for
all the input folks.

Oh boy do I have a deal for you.

I can sell you a set of vintage "speaker" wire of equal or superior
quality for half that price! These are 6 foot sections for the same price
as a 3 foot ($2750). Some assembly required if you need sections longer
than 6 feet (shrink wrap and solder sold separately).

Also, I will consider trades of 6 foot cables for any good running street
legal MB diesel!

If you come to my house to pick them up, pay no attention to all of the
dumpster lamps with the power cords cut off in my living room.

these. Please, replys to my offer should be offlist.

FWIW, my cables are 278 feet long each, thanks to the coy way my builder
built this house. There are actually 8 speakers in my system, and the
price for the cable will be $4.4 M, rounded down for my friends here on
the list. Unfortunately I will not be able to break the set.

Re: [MBZ] automatic transmission question

2009-04-15 Thread dave walton
If the fluid coming out is in bad shape (usually is) I go through a
few fluid changes using generic cheap ATF until it comes out clear -
then drain and fill with Mobil-1. It takes a while for all the
accumulated gunk to work loose. I also place a few neodymium magnets
in the pan and/or on the filter.

My TD does that too, takes a few seconds to pump up or something, after
a week or more sitting, but once going it is fine. My old Caddy does

Re: [MBZ] Smart v. C

2009-04-15 Thread Steve MacSween
Here in Quebec, the debate is even sharper as urban Quebeckers' purchasing
patterns for vehicles are massively european. I would wager there are more
Smarts and Yaris and Civics per mile here than anywhere else in North
America, probably by at least a factor of 2. When you cross into the U.S.,
hell even when you cross into Ontario, the difference in the cars you see on
the roads is striking.

OTOH, rural Quebecers purchase like Americans. Can you say "Dodge Ram"?

I think the IIHS is making the point that the roads of Europe, for example,
are not crammed with 18-wheelers and full-size 4x4s in the same way as in
NA. They are becoming alarmed at the stats arising from meetings between our
giants and the ever-shrinking minicar segment.

At what price, a few extra MPG?

No amount of crush zones and airbags will ever replace the good old
vault-like body structure of a w116/w123/w126 etc.

When I first got my 79 240D it also hesitated. Have you serviced the
transmission by changing filter and fluid? I found that using Mobil 1 ATF
(the sacred fluid of the list) it didn't hesitate esp. when cold and
shifted much better-I drove it another 60K miles before selling it due to
rust.

Re: [MBZ] Stalls

Part of my job duties used to be radio operator. We were taught to use
"niner" to distinguish from "five" if reception was poor. For the same
reason we used radio alphabet to spell names (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie etc.).
Perhaps modern comms make this obsolete, but habits die hard. Using
standard procedures helps to prevent misunderstandings.

I was taught to use niner to differentiate from 'nein', so if you flew in
Rutherford County NC you'd have heard it. ICAO alphabet and all that. My
father (who still flies) uses it as well, so listen good next time you're in
Columbia SC. ;)

I believe the ICAO alphabet is civilian and the military's is slightly
different (?), I would be unsurprised if this was one of the differences.

I think I'd rather have a potentiometer, since you get almost infinite
volume adjust-ability. I suppose the Becker in my 190D has a digital
stepped attenuator rather than a potentiometer, and I often want
something half way between the (very large) volume steps, especially
when talking with a passenger while listening.

Perhaps they're trying to sell them to the same crowd that buys
$1000/foot copper wire:

A quote on the site says "Simply put these are very danceable cables."

I know exactly what they mean. I was listening to music the other day

Those fancy potentiometers do look cool. Are you building a tube amplifier?

Check out the actual stats kept by the insurance institutes. They gather
and distribute data used by insurers to determine financial risk. This is
not Detroit propaganda, it's information used by businesses to make
financial decisions. Both the US and Canadian data point to full-size
vehicles having less dollar payouts for injuries than smaller cars. OTOH
the 240D is not exactly a lightweight either!

Along with you, I would own a used Smart anyday - I thought they had a

I am not impressed with the adv war against the small car - it is big
car detroit out to squash the nimble small car, methinks.
Also, think for a minute - well over 80% of the cars that have ever
been driven on the roads were driven without airbags. Well over 90%
being driven today have airbags - my 240D is the exception and I have
no fear in the least. I think the statistics are still in my favor
and even better if I drive like an olde man.

We have a Smart, or more accurately, SHE owns one. They are quite high on
the road so you get good sighlines, plus they are surprisingly zippy,
maneuverable and nimble. These factors contribute to safety as much as the
multiple air bags and cubic shape.

Lake Erie and Detroit on a Sunday afternoon in late June of '75. This

I cite it only to pass along a tip to someone who someday may need
just a bit more info.

We had taken our 18-year-old daughter to a college orientation weekend
at East Carolina University and were returning to our home near Sault
Ste. Marie, MI. I had landed at Zanesville, OH, to refuel and give
the girls a "break." I knew there were many thunderstorms around and
a line of 'em possibly blocking my usual route from Zanesville across
the eastern end of lake Erie, Detroit, etc. Headed North toward
Detroit, I had the radio on giving constant updates on location of
thunderstorms, some to 60 kfeet, etc. 'Course my wife in RF seat and
daughter in back seat were hearing all of this, too. We were in the
clear at about 12 to 13 kfeet with a broken layer of clouds beneath us
and staying well clear of the thunderstorms. 'Course I could see the
line ahead of us seemingly, at first, blocking the Detroit route, so I
turned more northerly and decided to go across Ontario and around the
thunderstorms and to the east of Windsor, etc. I was carrying a
"running fix" by using two VOR's for navigation - I knew exactly where
we were, though we hadn't seen the ground in some significant time.

We were cruising along comfortably above Lake Erie, when my wife
looked through a hole in the clouds beneath us and saw the water. She
yelled (not quite a scream), "We're over water, we're over water." I
said, "Yes, I know. We're right there," as I pointed to the West end
of the lake on the map. About that time, the area above Detroit to my
left opened with a large gap between the thunderstorms, so I turned
back to the left and headed through the gap staying well clear of the
storms.

Suddenly, as we approached Detroit, the "stall warning horn" sounded!
We were straight and level, airspeed was good, power was good,
slipstream sounded normal, there was no icing - all was normal, 'cept
the "stall warning horn" was trying to "tell" me, "You're stalling,
you're stalling!" I put a small bit of forward pressure on the yoke,
we started a slow descent and acceleration, slipstream gave sound of
acceleration. I glanced outside at the stall warning port on the left
wing; it was clear. Wife was digging her fingernails into my inner
right thigh saying, "We're going down, we're going down!" I replied,
"I'm pushing it down. I'm still flying the airplane. Hush." She
demanded, "Well, explain that noise!" My reply, "I can't explain it.
Shut up!" Meanwhile, I pulled back on the yoke trying to make the
"horn" change pitch and climbed back to our cruise altitude. I
determined that I did, indeed, have positive control of the aircraft.

About that time, wife looked down and saw Detroit International
Airport beneath us. Still digging her fingernails into my right inner
thigh, she demanded, "There's an airport! You land this airplane
right now!!" I had decided I'd fly it all the way to The Soo with the
"horn" going. If I landed, I'd never get 'em on another airplane.

I looked out at the stall warning port on leading edge of left wing
again; as my eyes came back inside, I noticed that the ram air scoop
just inside the upper left corner of the windshield was closed. I
pulled it out slightly, the "horn" ceased immediately and the soothing
sound of ram air flow replaced the "stall warning." On takeoff at
Zanesville, I had too much ram air blowing on me, and I had reached up
and pushed the scoop closed. In flight, it had opened just enough to
make a noise that sounded EXACTLY like stall warning. 'Rest of flight
was uneventful.

Re: [MBZ] thunderstorms

2009-04-15 Thread Rich Thomas
One summer while a ramp rat at the local aerodrome, a nice summer
afternoon with thunderstorms all over here and there, this smallish
plane comes and parks on the ramp. I go out to see what they need, no
one says anything, which I thought was kinda weird, but whatever, we
sometimes got assholes coming there. 4 people climb out, white as
ghosts, and go into the building, walking kinda funny. So after a few
minutes I go in and ask the woman who worked the counter what was up
with them, did they need anything. She tells me they landed as soon as
they could after flying into a thunderstorm and losing 7000ft of
altitude in some few seconds, and coming out the bottom with only a
couple hundred feet of air beneath them. She said they were a bit
rattled and just needed to collect their wits before proceeding. After
an hour or so, the storms moved along, and they got back in the plane
and left, never said anything to me. I noted some reluctance on the
part of the passengers to get back in the airplane.

And again, no airline or general aviation aircraft pilot ever goes near a
thunderstorm knowingly. Which is where onboard weather radar, lightning
displays and what ATC can see helps avoid those hazards. Plenty of planes
including air carrier have been brought down by convective activity.

Re: [MBZ] Stalls

2009-04-15 Thread Rich Thomas
I coulda done that. Not sure what the big issue is. It is an airplane
with engines, throttles, flaps, landing gear, a wheel, rudders. Bigger
than some, smaller than others, all the same applicable principles
apply. The guy who did it was a pilot, so one assumes he knows a bit
about the things.

I remember a flight I was on, 1976 I think, it was an SAS DC-10 from Chicago to
Copenhagen with a stop in Montreal. Before we got to Montreal we passed
through what seemed like a very violent storm cell, the plane was bouncing all
over the place, several stomach-in-the-throat drops, and a couple of very sharp
bangs which later were explained by the flight crew as lightning strikes. They
revealed after we landed in Montreal that there was too much damage to proceed
and we had to stay overnight. As I recall at least one engine was knocked out
and would not restart, perhaps other problems as well.

All in all not a pleasant flight, would have hated to be in anything smaller.

In general I have respect for any who are in public service, but have a
special appreciation for the USCG. I'll be spending a bit of time on the CG
